HIV tests and false negatives
« on: January 24, 2010, 05:35:51 am »
If you look below at my numbers you can see my history i  tested negative jan 06 and also negative in 2005 jan and april 2005. The reason i got those three tests in 12 months was that i had been in  a relationship with a girl between 2001 and 2004 who died of aids  dec 2004(i knew nothing till she was in hospital in coma) . Is it possible all three tests were false negatives and in fact i have possibly been infected some years earlier. I didnt think this could happen as i understood that 90% or more show symptoms 3 months after exposure and the other 10% would show up after 12 months maximum. Its to late now im just curious .

While false negatives do occur I think it is unlikely you had 3 of them.  The Elisa test will detect antibodies 6 weeks after exposure.  It is a myth, and a terrible one in my opinion, that a person can be infected and repeatedly test negative for a set amount of years and suddenly test positive with no exposure in between.  It just does not work like that.

I think the general negative public has the stages confused with testing.  When they hear it can take 5-10 years for a person with HIV to reach an AIDS diagnosis without meds, they somehow perceive this as meaning you can get it 5-10 years after exposure.  That's just not true and  It's just not the same.

Tommy, to put this delicately and with everything you described here, we can accurately say this woman did not infect you.

  Sincerely,

  T

About the only way to be positive and test negative is to have no immune system left.... i.e. Very advanced HIV and few if any t-cells.  Generally Advanced HIV has other issues that make it pretty obvious that you have HIV.

Even then, it's not likely to test negative.  There are some great articles that explain how the ELISA and Western Blot processes work.  This is not the forum to discuss them in so I won't go there.

The important part is that you are getting treatment and making progress towards a normal life.  I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriend passing away.  Life isn't always fair in who it takes or when and it's always hard.
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.
