mini-strokes
« on: February 16, 2009, 05:57:40 pm »
I recently experienced a series of mini-strokes, that left my left side (head-to-toe) numb. Is it the meds? Has anyone else experienced this?

This is a complicated issue, and only beginning to be fully explored as many of us enter into years where we've been on HIV treatment for a long time.  It seems there is growing information that it can be from certain meds, but it can also be just from HIV itself (see link below, it's an article from just last week) -- and, of course, in some instances we would have had something happen to us even if we'd never been infected with HIV.

http://www.poz.com/rssredir/articles/hiv_cardiovascular_carotid_761_16096.shtml

Also, once you read that link you'll see the blue colored "tags" at the bottom where you can search for related topics on this issue.

I've, fortunately, not personally encountered this but a friend of mine just did in the past couple months.  He's still dealing with specialists so I can't really say much more about his own situation with any authority.  He's been infected for ~20 years and on treatment most of that time, is ~52 years old.  A little overweight but not a lot, but is healthy and doesn't smoke.

Best of luck.

Hey Ivorytickler,

Sorry this happened to you. How are you doing now? Is the numbness persistent or does it come and go?

Are you seeing any specialists? Were you lipids high? How about your blood pressure?

OK, I have a very self-serving reason for all these questions.

I haven't had the problem as yet, but I am the same age as Philly's friend, been positive about as long, but I used to smoke.

Also, heart attacks run on both sides of the family. They were the cause of death for my father and both grandmothers. My dad had his first heart attack when he was my age.

I hope the numbness is soon history and any other problems caused by the strokes also soon go away.

Well phooey. Something else to add to the list when I see the doctor.

HUGS,

Mark

It's very frightening to me, ivorytickler (and old ivory tickler myself, hehe  ;D  )

Hope your numbness becomes less and you are restored to your 'old self'.

hugs and best wishes,

Alan

Unfornately I know exactly where your coming from. I have been poz since 1989 and just in say the past 4 years have been developing all these minor systoms. I have been through lots different meds and does really seem to help either. I get them from the top on my left arm and they continue down to the bottoms of my feet, but they seem to come and go. Don't know if this is a good thing or not.

What does the Dr say or prescribe?

My father is late 80s and started getting them, he's on a blood thinner and not had one in months. His speech is slurred just a bit more, but he's quite weak now. Mom keeps asking him to speak louder because her hearing is bad even with aides. Turns out the Dr said that's all a speech therapist would do. Plus getting out to walk is good, not long sessions sitting.

I've read several articles and they are quite common. Lists of no-nos included lowering fats like bacon, hamburgers, cheese, and alcohol. All the good tasty things. lol

One friend had a more major stroke and still does his morning exercises, balancing, bending, touching his nose, walking etc.
