Dayuuumm Shingles!
« on: November 08, 2013, 04:51:22 pm »
Woke up yesterday morning with what looked to be mosquito bite on my lower back - except that at the end of the day it was more red, inflamed and bigger...

Woke up this morning with three more of the mosquito looking bites around my waist - same side of body as the thing on my back -

Feeling kind of lethargic -

So, went to work - showed a coworker who has had shingles before and she "pre-diagnosed" me  -- LOL

So, went to University of Miami and saw the doctor - sure enough - its the dayuuuummm shingles....

Now on a 7 day course of meds and some lidocaine gel....
Doc said I caught it early - so, hoping that the meds get it in check quickly....

Dayuummm shingles.

Not hurting too bad right now - but, I can tell that it is going to heat up a bit --- feels prickly (is that even a word), warm, and I feel kind of blah...

Dayuummm shingles.

I worry about shingles too. I may not remember this when the time comes but what are the earliest symptoms?

Ouch Phil,.... Hopefully you will get through this without a lot of the associated pain that sometimes comes with it.

You should also get yourself some Calamine lotion ( over the Counter) .  This will help with drying out any blisters that may develop.  Apply with cotton balls, on affected areas.

Take care, and get rest---Ray

Have you all had the shingles vaccine?  I've had shingles 3 times. When the vaccine came out I didn't think it would work if you've had them already. My GP said it would and I haven't had any since. Probably due for a booster.

I haven't done any research on this but just throwing it out there.

I understand people with high lipids are particularly at risk. Also smokers and those wtih low bone density.  I'll try and find the study.

My symptoms were the mosquito bite looking blister on my back - followed about 24 hours later with a few more similar looking blisters around my waist area....

I have also just felt kind of yucky -

And my skin feels hot and prickly in different areas - particularly where there are nerve endings...

Sometimes the pain comes on a bit stronger than other times...

The lidocaine gel seems to be deadening the burning/tingly feeling a bit...

I really hope it doesn't get too much worse

Doc said I can go to work - which is good - He said since they are in an area that is not exposed, there should be no probably with contagion.... just don't touch the areas, wash hands a lot...

I was told if my eyes start bothering me - or if I think it has spread there - to get into the urgent care or to UM quickly to treat...

So, we shall see how it goes -

Thing is, my CD4s at end of October were 987 - so, I guess CD4 level doesn't really have any impact on whether or not someone can have an outbreak of the dayuuuumm shingles.

Interesting -
My triglycerides were high on last labs and I smoke... Not sure of my bone density - although, I have been called pretty dense before   ;)

Phil - I was only joking about the lipids and everything else!  Just responding to Jeff!  My bad.

They are brought on by stress though and you've had a lot recently. Did your doc give you some pain meds?  Might be best to have them in case you need them. I hope you don't. Just sayin.

LOL - I told you I was dense....

Earlier Jonathan told me that if I don't take care of the shingles it could turn into gutters...
I actually asked him what was gutters - thinking it must be something horrible...
He said untreated shingles could become gutters and than one might even sprout a chimney -
I told you, I am a bit dense... LOL

And doc didn't give me pain meds - hoping that the lidocaine gel will keep things in check - if not, I will be seeing what I can do about getting pain medication.

Right now, I am hoping that the rash doesn't get any worse or spread and that it clears up quickly -

I have a lot of school work to do this weekend; have to do some things at my brothers house; and have three large grants I am working on ---- in between, I will try to get some rest.

Still better than another dayuuumm syphilis thread.   ;D  When Bill got a severe outbreak, it was quick.  Within 2 days he was in complete misery and had them all over.  My nephew had active chicken pox at the time and the doctor said that was the probable culprit.  Strangely, he was perfectly healthy at the time and I was suffering from AIDS and he was the one who came down with it.

Take care of yourself.

I'm going to try to still go to work - unless the pain gets too intense... but I have a pretty full plate of projects that need to get done... I can do some of it from home - so that may be an option.

Dayuuuuuuummm school work and Dayuuuuumm Grant Applications are what gave me shingles once.  I'm sure if I was taking care of Dayuuuuum Wolfie I'd get them too! lol

It's hard to know how severe they will get.  Once it was just mild.  Once I had to be put on morphine.  I watched Bram Stokers dracula nightly.

Morphine?  Hmmmm... now, that would be an option I wish the doc would have considered   ;)

You were into writing grant applications also?  Send me a PM - always good to talk to a fellow grant writer - you definitely know the life of a grant writer - nothing but deadlines and stress  - LOL   definitely not a career for the faint of heart - I question regularly why I do it.... then we get awarded a grant, people get hired, programs get implemented, students get services, and it makes it all worth it...

Just got one for our college to implement HIV prevention services in collaboration with a community based organization - so that should be pretty cool - The dean has asked me to apply for the project director position for it - so, I may do that - we'll see how things unfold....

Have had them TWICE...you are very fortunate to have immediately sought care and started medication...this will greatly reduce complications and recovery time.  All the advice you have heard is on point.

It seems shingles do not correspond to our T Cell count.  There is some mystifying reason why persons with HIV are more likely to contract shingles...but thankfully it is very manageable.  These forums are great for conveying information.  Hopefully everyone understands that once you "break out" with what seems like shingles...to get to the doctor/clinic/urgent care center immediately...do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Hope you recover quickly!

Thanks all for the reminder on the shingles vaccine  ;).  Funny, several years ago, I also got them on my first grant review with a new job at the Department of Public Health.  I thought if you had them once then that's that.  Thanks also for letting me vent, sad, the (my) perception on HIV, even in public health is still taboo.  :-\

Another grant writer?

So far not too bad - but funny thing is, in the last 3 hours probably 4 or 5 commercials have come on tv with the shingles vaccine being advertised... go figure....

About a year ago, my ID doc thought I might be coming down w/ shingles - but it was a false alarm... this time, not so lucky.

Gary is right - if you have even the slightest worry that you might have shingles - get to the doc, clinic, etc. - Doc said I made the right decision to get there early and that I will probably get through it quicker than I would have had I delayed until next week... I wasn't about to go into a long weekend without getting it checked.

Shingles hurts A LOT. I had them 2 or 3 years before I got my Dx, and funny enough, it was after a certain night wich I enraged bad, really bad (had a fight with my father). I can't help to think that these episodes could be triggered with certain emotional reactions?

It's ironic, by that time I thought I couldn't had something worse than Shingles, and then, 2 years later, aids came. I'm glad you treated it early phil, I went to the dermathologist (sp?) when the rash took half of my back and was going straight to my chest. Lucky for me, It didn't go to my face.

My first symptom was bursts of pain in my lower back that came and went every few minutes.  I described it as being pregnant and the baby kicking (although I shouldn't know what that's like...being male, LOL).  So, I went to the doctor the next day and she was glad I caught it early.  I forget what med she gave me, but it seemed to make me sicker than the actual pain from the shingles.  Fortunately I was mostly over it in a week.  Still have a few scars on my lower back.  Hope it doesn't come back anytime soon.

My partner's brother had them.  He's 45.  My mom had asked for the vaccine and was told she wasn't old enough.  Well, she's 63.  She was pissed at her doc, when she got them just a couple months after asking for it.

The shingles vaccine is not something my HIV practice is giving, unless you're in the recommended age.  I've always wondered if a vaccine is safe, then why not get it.  Why don't docs include this in the vaccinations?  I know many insurers won't cover something, unless you're in the CDC recommended age.  I wondered the same about the higher dose flu vaccine for elderly.  If it is safe, then why not give it to everyone, especially people with illnesses?  I suppose it is just a matter of cost.

My doctor said my CD4 was too low for me to get the vaccine. (120) at the time.

My first go round with shingles was pretty grisly and I run to the doctor now if I even get a fever blister , I know they are not the same .

Mine struck 3 days after my first chemo and it wrapped around my beltline and went down across my ass and crotch and back all the way up into my right ear that's never been the same . I have been through some tough crap and this is very high on the tough list . I now keep a bottle of Valtrex on hand just in case .

Phil,

Hope your early action helps to minimize the severity here.  It sure is time for you to catch a break!!!  When this clears, it might be time for a nice beach break!

Phil,

I should have led my reply with get well wishes.  Sometimes we think it is understood, but its nice to hear.  I know all the trauma and stress with your brother's illness and death and all the estate issues must have you stressed to the max.

How is your stress and emotional state, if you don't mind discussing?  Do you feel you're getting into a better place with it and able to have some fun and laughs again?  Or, is it still like all this happened yesterday?

I hope you feel better soon. I had shingles from the back of my head to between my eyes. They are no fun.

Phil, what is the latest with your shingles?  I hope you are recovering well?  My cousin had it in his 30's, and I've known some elderly people who've gone through it, and I know it can be one of *the* most painful experiences.  I do hope it's subsiding for your and your not suffering a great deal.

The pain has went away. I still have some of the "blisters" - but they have went down and are fading - but still noticeable - particularly around my waist on the left side. Doc said they can take a while to go away completely.

Thanks for checking.

It was horrible - but not as bad as it could have been because I caught it quick.

Glad to hear the pain is gone.  I'm sure early intervention did make this less severe--no doubt.  All the best for no more run-ins with it.

Glad you are better.  When I got the shingles I had a mild case, I know it was bad enough that I knew something was up because I went to the doctor to be diagnosed, but it was more mild discomfort than anything.
Pray God you can cope
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

So I ended up in the same boat but unfortunately I did not catch it quickly enough. It all happened as I was preparing to head east to care for my Mom and trying to tie up some loose ends at work. Finally ended up seeing my Doctor and getting medication for ten days. It was very ugly, still is to an extent, stretching from the bottom of my back midway across to my navel. The worst pain I believe I have ever experienced and my doctor would not prescribe any thing stronger than Tylenol, which is another story. Fortunately for friends I got some relief.
Currently everything is either scabbed over, healed with new tissue, or somewhere in between. What is now happening is the entire area feels numb or cold, and oddly enough this is irritating me particularly at night. Any suggestions?
I know it has been said multiple times but I am going to repeat it and apply it to myself, don't wait when in doubt get it checked out. This started out as a couple of tiny bumps, then what I thought was a pulled back and then the ugly.
Be well.
