Someone kick me - please!
« on: January 08, 2007, 09:38:43 am »
Complacency is a destructive thing.

In my case, I have become so complacent with my health status that I have ignored my own advice.

So, I got what I deserved.

Against all that I have preached for quite a while, I ate something that resided too long in the fridge.

It looked fine. Tasted fine. It wasn't fine.

For the past six days, I have endured some of the worst attacks of the hersheys I have had in years. I am becoming dehydrated thanks to this, which is giving me headaches and making me cranky.

The amount of Immodium I have taken in recent days would probably supply all the troops in Iraq.  It ain't a workin.

My next step will to be to either A) Trek to the locak adult bookstore for a buttplug; or B ) Go shopping at the local Five and Dime to find a large cork.

This is just a rant because I feel pretty dumb right now. I deserve this because I was stupid, I was complacent. The combination of the two has resulted in a nasty week.

This is a good lesson for me. One I apparently needed more than I thought.

HUGS,

Mark

Oh Mark;
             Here's your kick >:(!
I know how it feels to indulge into something that really makes us feel horrible afterwards. Ha,ha. That happens to me every now and them. I don't get the craps but it does get me vomiting with awful stomach acids with a surreal yellow-greenish color! It usually turns out to be red meats. I love a great big greasy steak but it kills me. When I rarely do get the craps either I do the Imodium's or just ride it out. It is a sort of cleaning inside out. Drink plenty of Gatorade, sprite, juices, 7up or any other drinks to keep yourself hydrated. I just eat Lipton soup (chicken broth that comes in an small bag) for a few days along with some salty crackers and soon my stomach gets back to it's own self. My diet during these days will include a lot of baked potatoes plain, but again this is me and someone may disagree with me on this forum.
Another tip, and this may be controversial, many years ago in college I stayed a weekend at a friends house. I over dosed on that chocolate drink called "Yoohoo" and had a terrible case of diarrhea. It lasted for two days with no relief until we visited his grandmother's house. She went to a lemon tree, grabbed a lemon and squeezed it in a glass of water and told me to drink it just like that. I did and two hours later the diarrhea was gone. Talk about grandma's remedies...sure hope some of this helps you out. Take care, fellow.

First about you:  I hope you are drinking a lot of water!  Also (and I don't know if this is wise or not - remember I am not on meds) but I find Zantac works better for me than Imodium if I ever get Montezuma revenge.

As for your thought on complacency being destructive - I am wrestling with the ramifications of that right now and boy do I know what you mean.

Zantac is really used for heartburn and GI ulcers.  It can also increase your chances of developing pneumonia.  I have never heard of it being used as an anti-diarrhea drug.

Just my 2 cents...

We have all done it. I try to make sure I throw anything out that is questionable, but sometimes things do slip by.

Just make sure you are drinking A LOT of fluids. Also, eat/ drink things which contain potassium, and sodium. You want to maintain your electrolytes. Dehydration can be serious.

If it does not get any better, call the doctor.

Hope you start to feel better soon!

Here's something that might help.  There's something called the B.R.A.T. diet.  It's low in fiber and also low residue.  Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.  If you do milk you might try the C.R.A.M. diet.  Cereal, rice and milk.  You can read a little more about it here.  http://ms.about.com/od/nutrition/a/BRAT.htm  .  Hope you're on the mend soon.

I've had a similar problem lately.  I put on a clean pair of pants and before I know it, I have to throw them in the washer and start over again.

Ok Mark here's what you do:

Poach some smoked fish and cut it up (I prefer haddock)
Couple of some spring onions (chopped up)
2 cups of boiled rice (jasmine is nice)
3 hard boiled egges
a pinch of curry powder.

Mix them all together, and you not only have a nice Kedgeree dish but a meal that will bind you good...trust me it works.

Love and hugs

Fluids, yes, but I will note that Catman's well intentioned suggestions of 'plenty of Gatorade, sprite, juices, 7up or any other drinks to keep yourself hydrated' puts sugar in the system which requires water for the body to process and so, other than perhaps Gatorade, would end up decreasing the water rather than increasing it.  Ditto the problem of drinking caffeine products such as coffee.  Flavored, unsugared, water.  I'd support the chicken broth if LOW salt only and adjust the BRAT to include it since the broth (nothing more, no pieces of things in it) has nutritional addition so that you don't end up dehydrated and exhausted.  Or use low salt or no salt chicken broth to cook plain old white rice and drink plain water.

Sorry you are not having good recent weeks, Mark!  Best, Win

Hey Mark,

Sorry you're not feeling too great.  Food issues seem so random.  You think something is safe and okay and it turns your stomach inside out.  But something that looks bad turns out okay.  I hope you get over this one quickly!!!

That is why I'm paranoid about food getting old or sitting out. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm the same way. I don't like eating out much and sometimes when I go shopping the meat doesn't look right. I think that is part of the reason why I'm cutting down on meats. I really don't have the problem of things going bad in the fridge because when I cook, I cook just enough for me or maybe an extra portion incase I get the munchies.

Mark,

Six days? Why haven't you been to your doctor yet? Six days is far to long for an ordinary case of food poisoning to last. Promise me you'll see your doc, you may need antibiotics to make sure this is completely cleared up. Don't take chances! If dodgy-food-guts last more than 36 hours or so, you need to see a doc.

Consider your ass kicked young man!

Zantac is classified as an H2 blocker also, it will block histimines.  Not sure how that would help with this though, but you never know.
When  you go to the doctor, ask them about lomotel, it is one of the best anti-hersheys I have seen around.  Just a suggestion.  ;D

Hey all,

Well, I saw the doc yesterday afternoon. He seemed perterbed that I hadn't given him a jingle earlier.

He said six days was too long and it should have cleared up in 36 to 48 hours.

Hmmm, where did I hear that before? (OK Ann, I can hear the tongue lashing from here).

He gave me a script for lomotil, then said he would give me 24 hours to feel better or there would be a battery of tests. He wanted to send me over to the local hospital then and there, but I talked him into a one-day reprieve.

He was down-right stern!

The bottom line (no pun intended) is the lomotil seems to have done the trick. I feel much better today and there have been no accidents to report.

So, I think this too may be passing (pun intended.)  ::)

I still seem to be more tired than usual, but that's probably because I haven't eaten as much as I normally do, and what I did eat wasn't exactly sticking to my ribs.

Thanks all for the help. Oh, and Roddles, I'm still waiting for the butt plug to arrive.  ;)

HUGS,

Mark

Glad things aren't happening :) Mark.  I think that your doctor's comment was the number 2 complaint of doctors about their patients in Consumer Reports: patients don't call doctors soon enough about a problem! Best, Win

heheheheheee...

Glad you're feeling better Mark!

I've got a fair amount of personal experience with food poo-oisoning from my days at the fishing. The cook who was aboard with us in Scotland used to forget to rotate his stock on a regular basis - which is a no-no when you don't have refrigeration.

Even the worst time when he fed us dodgy sausages for breakfast didn't last over 36 hours. But what a 36 hours they were! I'll spare you the details. Well, except to say that when it was all over, the skipper and I had to hose down several pairs of jeans each on the deck. :-X We didn't speak to the poor guy for a week - except to shout at him when he complained we were almost out of toilet paper. Gee, wonder why?  >:( :D

Mark, promise me you'll follow this up if the fatigue doesn't resolve.

Hugs,
Ann
