Unsure of the rapid test
« on: July 24, 2017, 12:58:24 am »
I'm so worried. About a month after I had unprotected sex I tested negative for hiv with rapid test. 3-4 months later today I did a test due to worry again. And it came out negative. There was just 1 line at the C. I left it in my bag for a couple hours and came back to find 2 small faint lines at the numbers 1 and 2. I'm so scared. I was advised by a nurse to try the blood test at lab. But I mean why would 2 more lines show up 😭 But I don't recall any symptoms. I felt so okay today and now my world came crashing down again. Please somebody help me. It's depressing me.
I do plan to do the test at the lab. But why would 2 faint lines show up after hours. They're literally like 2 thin looking strokes.

Most rapid tests have clear instructions regarding time, leaving tests too long and coming back to them late will give false results due to solution interactions within the test strips. Example leaving the test stick in the test for the Oraquick more than 40 mins.

Most people don't have any symptoms at first or too mild to even notice.

The tests have a window period of 3 months, meaning testing before 3 months has passed may produce a false negative, and as for doing followup testing with the lab I think its a good idea to give you peace of mind and a result so you can put this behind you, remember to also test for easier to transmit STI's.

Sorry to hear this has gotten you down, but with the lab test i think it will give you the peace of mind you need and than you will know your status either way so you can get on with your life.

Take it easy.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

I got back my results. Negative.
Note 2 self: don't read rapid test results after 20 minutes or hours later
