Supplements to avoid while bulking?
« on: September 29, 2016, 06:09:17 pm »
Now at the 9 week mark with treatment, I'm ready to start recovering my body by buying a ton of protein supplements tomorrow and start attending the gym again.
In total, I lost almost 70lbs to my infection, most of which was muscle, I weigh 104lbs now.

What I need to know is, what should I avoid while on Truvada and Raltevrevir?
I previously exploded in weight when I was 18 by using things like BCCAs, creatine  and protein.

From what I already know, creatine might not be an option?

Advice is much appreciated. It's important for my state of mind to get back to more or less where I was before :)

Hi Jason, welcome to the road back :)

I`m on  day 52 of meds and all is going well.I had lost about 35 lbs and jumped right back in the gym after a long absence once treatment started.I too bought a whey protein supplement and got back that 35 in pretty short order. On my second bloods my kidney values were raised..the Doctor wondered was i taking any other drugs which i wasn`t.I told him about the whey supplement and he asked me to stop taking it for a week and come back in for another blood test.I did and my kidney values  were back on track. This was not the first time the Doctor had come across this.I think its a well worn track for those with HIV.To cut a long story short be careful how much protein you take.Check with your Doc.I guess your kidneys are working a little harder with the ARV`s..throwing all that protein on top stresses them out even more.
Putting the weight back on really helps the head.Seeing your body strong and in good shape transforms it back into a friend and ally.
I was asked about creatine as well..not a good idea it seems.

Don`t over do it at first.Ease back into gym and food..and tell the Doc all.

Wishing you well,P.

Thanks man. I'll keep that in mind when I go shopping tomorrow.

I'm curious about the stats in your sig. It's strange how the viral load/CD4 ratio varies so wildly across us all. My viral load was over 14 times what yours was, but my CD4 was holding strong at a minimum of 490  ???

Hey again,
Yes,that ratio is subject not just to a relationship of quantity but quality as well.Apparently you could have very low CD4`s but they could be of such a quality that they do twice the work of comparable numbers in someone else..or as Mr.Burns says - I`m invincible !

That`s a really simplified view.I`m sure a better explanation will be a long shortly by other more able members.
My Cd4`s were at 50 when i found out  ::) but jumped up to 150 in 30 days.I`m hoping i`m above the magic 200 at 53 days in.i`m UD which is great(understatement of the year) and am told by all not to obsess with the numbers..which i do anyway ;) Apart from a sometimes disagreeable head,i feel pretty dam good.

Hope all well with you,P.

There are charts showing it better than I can explain, but when you are first infected your VL goes through the roof, whilst your CD4 will still be pretty high. Then the VL starts coming down to some sort of plateau as your CD4 count reduces due to infection of the cells with HIV. Eventually, if untreated, your CD4's reduce to zero and as it plummets, the VL starts shooting back up into the stratosphere. End result is predictable.

So where someone is on that continuum will see wildly different VL's and CD4 counts. Even that isn't set in stone though, and much is to do with genetics than anything else.

Also, other conditions can affect CD4 count. My 'baseline' CD4 was 160, but as I had a few other things going on, as I was also rocking gonnoreah and syphilis for the winter season, my clinic say it's hard to know my 'true' baseline as those other things may well have been suppressing it also.

As for protein. I just use a bog standard shake from the supermarket and use it primarily for muscle recovery and to avoid too much soreness.

In a way I'm jealous of you all trying to put weight on. I have the opposite problem...I've ballooned out and need to lose some... I'm not sure which is easier - to put weight on or get weight off. I know that putting weight on could potentially be more fun food-wise :)

The tenofovir DF in Truvada can put kidneys under stress, but the damage happens over an extended time.
You will be monitored for kidney function as part of your regular testing so any issues will get identified before they cause irreparable harm.

I am on my week 8 of a 16 week challenge trying to bulk up. I lost weight and now trying to gain muscles ;)
I am using all natural products ;)

Never felt better and fitter

Hi,

I am wondering the same things.

My ID doctor actually encourages me to take protein (I finally have a doctor saying that protein powder is good for me.  Only good thing out of this).  I usually only do two scoops every other day so it isn't anything bad.  I don't have my next blood test until the middle of next month so I'm interested in seeing my liver and kidney results.

I guess I was luckier then most (hope that didn't come out wrong).  I lost 20 pounds in just under 10 days and I still have yet to gain it all back but almost their.  Over the past 2 years I have lost over 65 pounds, as I was eating better and exercising.

Now bulking back up and getting my muscle mass back is going to be the challenge.  I just hope that once my body gets used to Atripla I can exercise more and not cause the nasty side effects.

Now I have heard that pre-workouts and creatine are bad for you so I will hold off on those till a later point.  I just want to get back to the gym and add some nice mass.

What's good for one is not for the other, glad to hear you have a supportive doctor and just keep an eye on the labs and interactions for anything you do take.

I totally agree Jim.

I take less then I did before and being sensible with it.  I too want to see what my numbers come back as.  Well they get any worse.

I just haven't had too many good experiences over the past few months so when I get one I got to enjoy it.

But as you said, everyone is different.  I talk with my ID/PCP doctors about everything as I see them monthly as it is turning out, and won't even take a multivitamin unless I get the green light from them.
