Wisdom teeth surgery and deep kissing
« on: April 27, 2008, 08:58:20 pm »
Hello,

I had wisdom teeth surgery iand 2 weeks later I engaged in kissing with a male partner (I am female) whose HIV status is unknown.  He has claimed to have protected sex (condom used properly during EVERY sexual encounter), but I recently heard that he may have slept with a prostitute (I'm not sure if he used a condom during this encounter, but he may have).  We mostly engaged in closed mouth kissing, but there was some mild french kissing.  Did I put myself at risk for HIV since my wounds from the operation are not fully healed?  I do not know if he had blood in his mouth.  I did not taste any.  Would I have realized if he were bleeding?  He doesn't have any known gum problems.  Should I get tested 3 to 6 months from the date of the encounter?  Thank you.

No, you were not at risk of HIV transmission as a result of this incident. HIV is not transmitted via kissing, even if one or both of the people involved have had recent oral surgery.

As for this comment:

but I recently heard that he may have slept with a prostitute

HIV is not concerned about who people are, but what they do. For the record, sex workers generally practice safer sex to a much higher extent than the rest of the community. You should also know that the window period for HIV testing is 3 months, not 6 months.

Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread and follow the links to our Lessons to learn more about how HIV is and is not transmitted.

Thank you for your reply.  But, I recently heard that there was a reported case of HIV being transmitted via kissing and that both partners had had recent oral surgery (although both were bleeding at the time, I think the report said).  Is this possible?

My other question is, if I have had protected vaginal sex with a male, what is the risk that the condom may leak as he withdraws?  I think he held the base of the condom as he withdrew, but I cannot be sure.

Thanks again.

Yes, well provide a link to the "reported case" that you head about and we'll take it from there.

Provided the condom is used properly (and from what you describe it was) then there is no danger of leakage as your partner withdraws his penis.

Ah yes, this old chestnut.

From the article:

A woman apparently became infected1 with the AIDS virus from a deep kiss with a man who had bleeding gums and canker sores.

Additionally a reported case does not evidence constitute, no matter what the CDC might have said at the time. Also this report is 11 years old.

My view of this matter and therefore my advice you earlier stands.

Just a ps that you ought to know that your saliva contains enzymes and proteins which very effectively render HIV incapable of being transmitted. Those reports about transmission via kissing never hold up under scientific scrutiny.

Should I get tested?
Hi,

I had sex with a man - we used a condom, but I have since found out that he has had unprotected sex with many women.  I remember him checking the condom briefly after we were done and everything seemed fine, but is it possible that the condom malfunctioned?  For example, if he didn't hold it properly when he was withdrawing or if it moved up the shaft of his penis during intercourse and some semen leaked?  Should I get an HIV test?  I don't know his HIV status.  We did not have unprotected oral sex.  If the condom were to break, I would have noticed, right?

Thank you.

I've merged your threads. Please keep all of your entries in this same thread.

Emma, you are worrying yourself needlessly. The important thing is that you used a condom for intercourse. They provide very effective protection no matter who the guy is you're with and no matter how promiscuous he might be or what his HIV status is.

All of your worries about this situation are in the domain of WHAT IF. When a condom breaks it's not a subtle event. It ends up looking like a fringed hula hoop on the guy's penis. Semen doesn't accumulate and sneak out of the condom. Condoms are a very effective means of protection against HIV transmission. There is no need for concern nor for testing relation to this incident.

Get on with your life and keep using a condom everytime no matter whom you are with.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Thank you for your response.  Sorry about not reposting in my original thread.

I have an additional question - what is the risk if blood or pre-seminal fluid comes into contract with a blister that had broken several hours beforehand?  I know that open sores and cuts that come into contact with blood or semen of an HIV+ individual can lead to transmission, but what about a healing, open blister?
Thanks again for all of your help.

em,

Unless that blister was inside your anus or your vagina and you were having UNPROTECTED intercourse, then you don't have to worry about getting a bit of semen or blood on it. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse.

You did the right thing and made sure a condom was used. Stop worrying. Read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use them with confidence.

Again, thank you so much for all of your help.  I have one final question (I hope):
If he began putting on the condom inside out and then turned it around the right way, is it possible that some pre-cum got onto the condom since he flipped it over and that I was exposed to this during intercourse?  If so, is this an HIV risk?  He has had some risky sexual encounters in the past, I have learned.

Thank you.

No, that would not be a risk. Your mind is obviously squirreling around looking for things to worry about -- unnecessarily. HIV is a fragile virus and would not be hanging on to one side of the condom to infect you in the incident you have described. The important thing is that the guy had the head of his penis covered with a condom when you had intercourse.

This was not a risk and there's no need for testing nor for further worrying.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Thanks, Andy.  Yes, my mind is reeling with possible scenarios - I guess I just feel terrible about this guy and feel stupid for having bothered with him at all.  I don't understand why, on so many sites, they warn that even a small amount of pre-cum on the outside of a condom poses a risk?  Is it just to make people be extra careful in the interest of public health?

Thanks,
Emma

Hello again,

Here I am back with another paranoid question.  Thank you so much for your assistance and understanding.

If I am engaging in mutual masturbation with a partner and I get some pre-cum on my fingers and then touch his hand (the pre-cum was drying/mostly dry at this point) and then he puts his finger in my vagina or anus, is there an HIV risk?  What if I have some small cuts in and around my anus?  Also, I washed my hands afterward (I don't know how thoroughly) and then scratched my anal region quite hard.  Could some virus in the pre-cum have survived under my nail for 15-20 minutes? Also, if his penis brushed up against my anus with some pre-cum on it and I have some small tears around there, is this a risk?   I am a little freaked out because this guy has said that he once had unprotected sex with a woman.  Thanks.

em,

As you have already been told, hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. When hiv finds itself outside the body, it quickly becomes damaged and unable to infect.

It doesn't matter how many times your partner has had unprotected intercourse with someone else, the important thing is that a condom is used when he is having intercourse with YOU.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It REALLY is that simple!
