init, I know a kid in my family who is only 11 and takes medicine for diabetes every day. His long term prognosis is probably worse than many of us. But he is a fighter and you won't see getting down because of this. Now you can bring up the stigma discussion but that's not the point.

Look at it this way, your immune system is as good as a non-HIV person. Its just that you have to take a pill every day to keep it that way. With modern meds, its not any different from taking meds for your heart, diabetes, psoriasis, or any number of conditions. We all have to die one day. I might not be here next week, but I am sure as hell that I am not going to die from AIDS. That would be a horrible, horrible way to turn the lights off.

Please stay strong and try to convince yourself that taking a break is not an option.

Omg, If I hear one more time that hiv is just like diabetes I think I will scream it is not like it at all people aren't made to feel ashamed of having diabetes like they are with hiv. I know I have that too among others things I take meds for. no one thinks bad of you when you check your blood sugar or take your meds but tell them that  you have hiv and see what happens.  I know what most do in my area I have witness first hand   they treat you like your damage that they will catch something people do fear the unknown comments made to me over the last year has told me all I need to know about what people think. I will not tell anyone else I'm poz.  I took my damn pills today and made a promise to someone never to stop again. one thing about me if I make a promise I keep it no matter what. Reason I promise to make sure I do it.  I also have found out there are bullies every where and people who judge no matter what. but I'm here to say I will never be one of those people ever and I will learn how to deal with being poz  until then I have some great rum I brought back from belize that ease's all pain and hurt

or were we right? we were right weren't we :)

much ado about nothing

edited to add... you're missing the point about chronic health conditions. we get it, it's a shame. but medically, it could be so much worse

I would strongly disagree and argue that it is in fact like any other chronic manageable illness prima facially. Both have impacts throughout life if not treated, however if one is under treatment and makes considerable efforts to purse a healthy lifestyle then they will be fine. Your issue is with stigma, not the medical implications per se . There is always going to be "stigma" with ANY illness--it's a dichotomous relationship: healthy & sick or ill. Most everyone views a "sick" person as just that, labeling and categorizing them, otherizing them. Diabetes specifically does have a stigma attached--unhealthy and obese, both are key words people associate with diabetes, thus stigmatizing the condition. In regards to your experiences, I am sorry that those people were uneducated and essentially ignorant to your condition, but your willingness to educate them will be the only thing to help facilitate a better understanding. At one point people believed they could "catch cancer" and we all know this to be untrue now a days. I am very happy you're back on meds, however you should tell your DR. just so that you keep that open dialog going with him/her.

I want to remind everyone her that initforlife is a 50-something female from a very rural area of Missouri. She is not a 30-something gay male from a large metropolitan area. There are huge disparities regarding stigma with HIV in these demographics, and we should be careful to judge how someone in different circumstances of age, race (we do not know her race) gender and the rural/urban divide reacts to this issue.

It's an unfortunate fact of HIV and yes, it does make it different than diabetes. And yes I agree with initforlife that this separates it from diabetes and I'm sure it makes her sick of hearing how it's easier than having that disease. Yes, it's easier on the doctor's end but not on the patient's end -- disease isn't just a physical issue, it's also a mental issue.

And getting back to my rural/urban divide I will add that for many urban residents there's not much of a divide if poverty comes into play. HIV stigma in an impoverished urban area is probably as bad as a rural US area by degrees -- urban African American communities are as religious as Southern African American communities, etc.

initforlife, I hope at some point in your life seeing as how you will have HIV for decades now you will find some way to to make face-to-face friendships with other HIV+ people. I don't know how to tell you to go about this, that is for you to investigate, but it will benefit you greatly in the long run.

It will even help, if I may suggest it, if in the females group here on the forums if a group of you get together and find a set time weekly to have a group chat on Skype. Perhaps start off with audio only and when you are more comfortable those of you with webcams can have sessions where you have group video chats. Really, it's like getting together in a room together kinda sorta. I think it would help make for some fellowship.

Philicia makes a most valid point. I would like to add, however, that regardless of whether one lives in NYC or the Appalachians, stopping your meds is never an option.
Diagnosed in  May of 2010 with teh AIDS.

PCP Pneumonia . CD4 8 . VL 500,000

TRIUMEQ - VALTREX -  FLUOXETINE - FENOFIBRATE - PRAVASTATIN - CIALIS

Numbers consistent since 12/2010 - VL has remained undetectable and CD4 is anywhere from 275-325

One of the question in this thread was:

What is the risk of viral rebound and CD4 decline associated with a 10 days unscheduled interruption for a a patient, under meds, UD... (and with a baseline of CD4 850, in this case...)

This article below, addresses the issue

Viral Rebound Is Significantly Delayed Among Some Who Interrupt HIV Treatment

http://www.thebodypro.com/content/75140/viral-rebound-is-significantly-delayed-among-some-.html?ic=wnhp

IMO, the take home lesson of this 'new' findings seems consistent with what I had posted ealier
NVP/ABC/3TC/... UD ; CD4 > 900; CD4/CD8 ~ 1.5   stock : 6 months (2013: FOTO= 5d. ON 2d. OFF ; 2014: Clin. Trial NCT02157311 = 4days ON, 3days OFF ; 2015: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02157311 ; 2016: use of granted patent US9101633, 3 days ON, 4days OFF; 2017: added TDF, so NVP/TDF/ABC/3TC, once weekly
