:) :) :) Today, September 21 six years ago I began the ARV treatment! And here I am, thankful for the extra time on this earth. 2191 pills I have taken at a cost of US$273,000! Thank God for insurance! Thank you to everyone here, in these forums, that one way or another have made my ride with HIV a lot easier!! Hope to stay around for a lot more time!! ;D ;D ;D

Wow. I live in Thailand and self fund my arv meds. Six years of medicine for me and my partner cost $7200. (Him on generic Atripla and me on Generic Truvada and Brand name Edurant).

I'm curious... what happens in the USA if a person has no health insurance and they need ARV treatment?
Say if someone has an ok job (so they cannot claim poverty) but just did not buy health insurance and they cannot afford the ARV treatment?
We are very lucky in my country (like a lot of EU countries) with the treatment being free.

what happens in the USA if a person has no health insurance and they need ARV treatment?
in many states if a person is at 300% of poverty, they can get assistance through the Ryan White Care Act which provides funding for meds and treatment. If someone earns more than that, chances are pretty high that they have insurance benefits through their company. Otherwise people use patient assistance programs to get meds. Unfortunately, having to pay for medical expenses out-of-pocket bankrupts quite a number of HIV positive and HIV negative citizens. Although bankruptcy for an HIV+ person might make them homeless, that poverty will make them eligible for Ryan White assistance.

really no one gets "free" healthcare. You're just not having to pay for it with each use. Your healthcare is subsidized through your government by your taxes. You and everyone around you is paying for your healthcare and you are paying for their healthcare. ;)

Well.... That is a problem, and a major one. There are organizations that help fund the meds if you can prove need.

What a difference in cost! As I stated, some of us are lucky we have insurance!
