Mexico Trip
« on: April 12, 2013, 11:33:30 pm »
Hello everybody,
This is my 1st time going out from USA after in medication for 1 year. I'm going to Mexico for 15 days with my partner on May 3rd. I'm going to Guadalajara, Guanajuato and Mexico City. I know that I have to drink bottle water and avoid ice. Is it ok with the street food as long as they are cooked? I love to try local food and the best mostly are selling on the street. is it good idea?
Do you think 15 days supply medicines will be a trouble when I arrive in Mexico airport? Will they questioning me and make a hard time for me to enter Mexico?

Thank you.

I was in Mexico City about 5 years ago. It's not illegal to travel with HIV medication in Mexico so no, they won't hassle you.

As far as street food, I don't know what to tell you -- I guess if you have 10 cd4 count you might want to tread carefully but otherwise I don't see why it's any different than eating a nasty hot dog from a vendor in Central Park. Definitely will taste better. Yes, I would stick with cooked meats like tacos, etc. I recommend traveling ANYWHERE with some type of anti-diarrhea medication just in case you need it. I honestly don't remember avoiding ice cubes but if it makes you feel better do it.

Have fun -- it's a really marvelous special city. Try and hit up the Museo Nacional de Antropología lots to see there.

Central Park Hot Dog Vendors and those in Times Square are not only nasty. They are tourist trap!  :)
My CD4 is 395 and VL is UD but CD4% is 12.2 ( April 5th 2013)
My ID gave me prescription of Diarrhea antibiotic and asked me to bring imodium with me.
Thank you and hope I will enjoy Mexico without any problem! Still nervous cos I know I'm traveling this time with a different condition

No, don't be nervous. I've travelled a LOT while I've had HIV the past 20 years. Tons of places in the Caribbean where I'd go up in the mountains and eat at shacks roasting pig, goats, etc. And I've always gone to bars in all these places and used the ice cubes. I don't drink water from a faucet and use bottled water, but that's it. Don't allow yourself to be nervous.

Miss P.,
Your avatar is probably not helping in comforting a nervous traveler. ;D

I've been to Mexico quite a few times since being positive.  The first time after being positive I was a little nervous and my doctor gave me a prescription for Cipro to take with me incase I needed it, which I didn't.  I haven't bothered with that since but I usually go to Cabo and have never been to Mexico City.

Sanitation and water quality has gotten a lot better in the past decade.  When I was a kid we would go more often about every other month and I always got sick.  It's rare now.

With that said I would be careful about what you eat and bring Imodium, or you can buy it there is called Lomotil.

Miss P. was absolutely right in everything; you shouldn't be afraid to eat what they sell on the street. That being said, I would avoid eating anything that I would avoid every day anywhere. For instance, fresh lettuce or spinach from a street vendor in the middle of the city is something I avoid as a habit. And if you can get Lomotil, it is a huge convenience. You might even be able to get some at a pharmacy in Mexico if you ask for it. I was able to buy Azithromicin and Tramadol just by asking.

Another thing I suggest for Mexico is squeezing lime on everything, if you like the taste. I have no science to base that on, but I feel better doing it. Seems like it couldn't hurt.

 8) Hi, take your own antibiotics, there is a new law in Mexico,  to get antibiotics. you can get them ONLY with a prescription. and eat whatever you like, I too would avoid veggies uncooked.
I agree with Miss Pil. visit EL  MuSEO DE ANTROPOLOGiA E HISTORIA in Mexico city, Guadalajara es beautiful too but I love Guanajato. Do not worry about Moctezumas' curse
