swollen lymph nodes?
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:30:32 pm »
Hi there, my bf was diagnosed with HIV about 2 months ago now, had ARS about 3 months ago, but still has swollen/enlarged lymph nodes. I have read online that that is one of the few symptoms of HIV that some people do have even when they are otherwise healthy...but i was wondering if this meant anything in the people that do have it? Does it mean they have a high viral load? or their body is not handling the virus well? Or is it just a completely random/not known why some people get enlarged lymph nodes and others don't?

Thanks!

It's common to have swollen lymph nodes for a while after initial infection. They should go down in the coming months, particularly if he  starts meds. I have one behind my ear that's been permanently enlarged since I acquired my virus. It changes in size from time to time but it never hurts and my doctor says to not worry about it. It's presently about the size of half a tick-tac. No biggie.

If his are bothering him, he should speak to his doctor about them. He should also keep his hands OFF them. Touching and prodding them all the time to see if they're still swollen will irritate them and keep them swollen. HANDS OFF!

I've moved this thread and another one you started today in the Living forum to the Someone I Care About forum as that is the more appropriate place for you to post unless you're asking specific questions about the meds, then posting in the Treatment forum is ok.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
