KALETRA AND COMBIVIR
« on: February 20, 2010, 03:42:45 pm »
My wife is HIV poz from cheating on me 8yrs ago which made me also HIV poz from her unknowingly.
However for the best interest of our kids and forgiveness we r still together after i found out the truth from her confession.
We have 3 kids and 1 on the way all NEG(DNA PROVEN)
She is now 4months Pregnant and on Kaletra and Combivir and she is always having diarrhea, its freaking me out.
Is there any other suggestions on other meds, the diarrhea is very often and for her being pregnant i am very scared.
Is this normal and if yes till when?
Thanks

Yes, Kaletra can easily cause frequent diarrhea for many people.  I obtained a prescription for loperamide when I was on Kaletra and too some with every dose of Kaletra and it helped to control the diarrhea.  Loperamide is just prescription strength imodium (OTC imodium is 1 mg, loperamide is 2mg).  If your wife wishes to continue with Kaletra I would advise that she call her doctor and obtain a prescription for this.  She'll need to play around with dosing though, and it's not anything dangerous though since she's pregnant the doctor will obviously know more.  One 2mg capsule with each dose might suffice, and if it's not working just gradually increase the dose.  I was taking about 8 mg twice daily when I was on Kaletra, but most people don't have diarrhea issues as bad as I do - I've had it no matter what HIV med combo I'm on, but Kaletra is known to be one of the worst offenders.

But for now since it's a weekend maybe you should just run out and buy some OTC imodium at the drug store.

Oh, and the addition of a pancreatic enzyme also helps and increases absorption of food.  I take MS-8 Pancrecarb in addition to loperamide each day, and it's much better than just loperamide by itself.  This is also a prescription.

Dear, I'm sending you a pm.  I don't think you know  you posted in the women's forum.

Edited to add:  In case anyone wonders who I'm talking to, it's Miss Philicia, not the OP.  But, it's alright, we won't spank her too hard, lol.

Same combo for me and viread (just gave birth 2 months ago) - I suffered terribly with the loose motions all through my pregnancy. Presume that's what they've also advised for the baby to have after he/she is born? I wasn't undetectable at the birth so the baby needed to have all three.  He hated the kaletra.  Anyway I'm off the meds now and 'things' have returned back to normal.  It's not for long if she can put it up with it and it's for the baby afterall.

I've moved this thread out of the Women's forum as the original poster isn't a woman, even if he's asking about his wife.

I wish I had seen this thread earlier. (don't know how I missed it) It's not a great idea to recommend drugs to a pregnant woman without checking them out thoroughly. Loperimide isn't really recommended for pregnant women.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Loperamide should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. source

Hello, I was on Kaletra for years and used fiber to eliminate the diarrhea.   I tried several but still prefer and use a product call Trufiber.  It dissolves completely in water, has no taste, and you just take it once per day before retiring.   I also use their probiotic, Theralac, which also helped me a lot.

You can buy the products here: http://store.master-supplements.com/p-18-trufiber.aspx
