The thing about these tests is that it is impossible to say much from just one result. You really need a few more over time to be able to tell a trend.

What can be said is that a CD4 count of 460 suggests your immune system is coping okay for now. You are not in any danger of getting ill. Normally you don't even consider starting medication until it approaches 350.

Did the doctor tell you the CD4 percentage? It is usually regarded as a more stable indicator as CD4 and viral load can tend to bounce up and down. If not, then ask next time you see the doctor.

When are you scheduled to next get a set of results?

Okay, so soon you should have a second set of results. A good tip when you see your doctor next is to bring a notebook and a pen. You can then prepare your questions in there and thereby make sure you don't forget to ask them while you see her/him.

Try not to obsess too much on the numbers. They will go up and down, just look at mine. It is all about the trends they show.

Of course you can add me.. ;)

Steven, this was only the first round of labs.  Your CD4 is not bad at all.  The viral load is so high because your body is trying to adjust to having this new 'being' in it.  Give it another 2 or 3 rounds (of bloodwork) to get a more accurate picture.

And like Keyite said, ask your doc about your %'s.  Good luck.

I just hope this does not consume me and i bottle out of life  !!!

Hi Steven...I'm a newbie too...diagnosed November 28th, last year...  I know everything you're going through, and although I haven't posted a lot in the forums, I've seen that the support that people get on here, even though it's cyberspace, is unbelievable.  I think you're learning that too.  Everyone has their good and bad days, and although I can't speak for the medical care in Scotland, I know you're be fine.  I was told by my attending nurse that years ago, before HAART, that they used to tell people to get a Will, and now we're being told to get a retirement savings plan.

Take care of yourself and feel free to message me if you're looking to chat or exchange thoughts...

Steven, it's good that you're saying what you need to here. As overwhelming and scary as numbers, details and the unknown may seem right now, gradually you're going to find things falling into a better place. I absolutely promise that. Your life is going to be about a lot more than the virus.

You might keep a little notebook or pad with you so that you can jot down questions for your doctor when you get together. Often things fly out of your head during those visits and later you're kicking yourself to not have asked something that was on your mind.

And of course as you see from the responses you've gotten, you've got a knowledgeable and supportive group here who will be glad to help you out.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

I agree with others Viral load/ tcell can change dramatically over time and even in one day. I wouldn't be too worried about a result. focus on the positive. Take care of yourself. Eat right , get plenty of sleep, lower your stress level, drink water, exercise. All of this will help with your mental health and labs
