38yr old male no life insurance
« on: February 02, 2015, 08:39:40 pm »
Hi everyone...I have been hiv positive since 2011.  I am undetectable and very healthy.  My fear is that I have no life insurance.  Everywhere on the web shows these group life insurance companies but you have to be over a certain age.  I have not been able to find any insurance for someone my age with HIV.  Any thoughts?

Thanks
J

There aren't any individual policies that cover those with HIV that I'm aware of.  Getting on a group plan at work, then transfering that to an individual policy when leaving the company is the only thing I've been able to do.

thanks for the quick response.  Forgive my ignorance...what do you mean get on a group insurance at work...just getting life insurance up to the max before I have to get a physical?

Thanks again

I recently posted a thread (few threads down) about a company advertising life insurance for poz people.  I saw it on FB.  I guess it showed up in my feed, due to my google search history.  Or, maybe because I "like" Poz Magazine on FB.

First, I am still suspicious about this company.  The website is weird and doesn't have the normal dot com at the end.  But, I know those are running out and others are being used, so maybe not suspicious.  However, when I google the company, I cannot find anything about them-- except for their website.  I couldn't find those possible scam links, that you often find about new businesses.  Or, even well-known businesses.  I have no idea whether they are new.  I assume they are, since I couldn't find links discussing the company.

I spoke with an agent.  He claimed someone poz and UD could get up to a million dollars.  I asked whether the rates would be much more than a smoker and he said much lower than a smoker.  He suggested I call or chat online to get rates.  I never did that.  This reminds me I should check into it again and learn who their underwriters are.  I would like to see what those rates are.  Until I learn whether they are legit, I don't want to give personal info.  Even if legit, this could be a company that goes out of business and all your premiums lost.

If someone is better at googling and finding the 411, I would love to hear what they find.

Hi Reecy.

I am not sure where you live, but here in SA they have policies for people with HIV. Obviously they do add on a penalty and they can have certain exclusions depending on past history. I am over 40 and just recently got insurance so the age thing isn't a factor.

Whatever minimum guaranteed amount you can get through an employer group policy (guaranteed life) before having to go through bloodwork, etc. (optional life).

If your employer has health, life, accidental death and dismemberment, short and long term disability, etc. then there is very likely a guaranteed life amount for all employees.  Some of these can convert to individual policies when you leave the company, some can't.
