condom details and other concerns
« on: February 19, 2007, 02:58:12 pm »
Please help, even if this is trival for you.

I recently visited an old sex-worker and she gave me a unprotected hand-job and protected blow job.

However fears include:

1) She touched the 'opening' of my penis and didn't know what she may have done that for before giving me a hj.
2) Cannot be certain that she didn't have any cuts.
3) my penis doesn't look like there are any.
4) BJ with condom, however type and or use-by-date were not known (as the lessons mention this).
5) I came outside of the condom, but might have had saliva on my hand.
6) I didn't wipe or shower until about 10mins later.

Do I have any concerns, and should I get a test?

PS: I also want to know how much blood is needed for transmission through cuts, etc?

Many many thanks, and this site has been an eye-opener and educational!

Regards,

hjkl

HJ, even if you had gotten a blowjob without a condom it would not have been a risk for transmission. In the entire history of the epidemic there's never been a case of transmission in that manner. Period.

As to your penis head having been "touched" by the sex worker, that's also not a risk for HIV transmission. Nor is anything else mentioned in your thread.

Unprotected intercourse, whether vaginal or anal, are what you have to be aware about in terms of risk. That means always, ALWAYS wearing a latex condom when doing either.

Guys seem to worry more about exposure when they have been with a sex worker rather than a civilian. The reality is that as long as you always use condoms for intercourse it doesn't matter whom you are with. Read the lesson on transmission  if you haven't already done so. (There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section).

Also, in general we do recommend that anyone who's sexually active regularly have a full STD panel done. That means at least annually and every six months is even better. There are other STDs out there which are much easier to acquire than HIV.

This time out you have no cause for further concern.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Thanks so much.

But what about the condom issue--does old condoms or lambskin ones render them pointless?

And how much blood needs to be exchanged between cuts and openings for there to be a transmission as various sources on the web differ in there opinions.

Regards again.

lambskin is not used to prevent STDs and HIV they are used to prevent pregnancies. You want to protect yourself from most STDs and HIV use latex or polypropylene condoms. If the condom didn't fail then you didn't have a worry about the exp. date.

Tell your mind to take a rest.

You used a condom. They provide very effective protection. If a condom fails you will have no doubt about it. It's not some secret little pinhole break that lets HIV sneak in and infect you. The condom falls apart and looks like a hula hoop with fringe on your penis.

So whatever the date on the condom you used it did what it was supposed to do. It covered the head of your penis and you were not at risk even though you were with a scary old sex worker. Really.

Just keep using a condom everytime for intercourse and you'll be fine as far as sexual transmission of HIV is concerned.

thanks for your advice all!

But what are the chances I used a lambskin, out of interest, as I've never seen these on sale generally?
One more thing, what about the contact/time and amount of fluid exchnage-does this have to be a lot...i.e for a long time 1min>--as some sites seem to suggest a momentary contact/exposure is enough for transmission?

thanks guys!

Sorry and one more thing (i don't want to sound like a WW, but i just can't help it right now)

I was also on alcohol, and hadn't slept- would this have lowered my immune system? increased risk?

In addition, less than 48hours later i am now ill, with a chest infection of some sort. Is there any cause for concern? are they related...or is it anxiety or maybe sleeping with the window open and catching a cold-something as simple as that?

thanks so much for the great help on this site.

Hjkl-

In order for there to have been a chance for infection, a risk must first have occurred. As you had no risk, your worries are groundless.

Get some rest and put this out of your mind. But, in the future, if you are to engage in vaginal or anal sex, use a LATEX condom that hasn't expired and plenty of water-soluable lube. Otherwise, get all the hand- and/or blow-jobs you want...no condom required.

You did not have a risk You had protected sex so your symptoms have nothing to do with your sexual adventures.

Receiving a blowjob is not a risk of HIV infection. Giving one, has a minute chance but science is tending to believe it is not.

Ok, just one last thing--

can I confirm that the opinion of people on this board is that handjpbs (whatever spin you put on it--contact with tip of penis, small cuts, saliva, some blood) cannot be a viable route of transmission?

Confirmed.  You cannot contract HIV in this manner.

I just have one thing to add. . .

Thank you, and this whole episode has been one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I am in a long-distance relationship and one trys to 'justify' their regret/guilt by referring to all the lessons one has leanrt. I cannot excuse myself, but it is also true that without the guilt, fear and torment I stupidly but myself in I wouldn't be as educated about HIV/AIDS as I am now.

That is not an excuse, just a fact. . .and thankfully I have learnt this relatively early in my life. And thank you guys, as although I will have to life with this episode all my life and try hard to not let the guilt, whether from society, my partner or myself get me down, I do have more understanding about this subject, and more empathy about suffering and fear in general.

Thank you for all your kind help and I will try not to be a WW/OCD poster and constantly worry, as I realise this is a disrespect for all those courageous and normal people out there who have to deal with a much harsher reality.

I hope this passage isn't too theraputic and weird, but so much has passed through my mind and you are the only people I have spoken too. Thank you and I hope you all the best of luck in everything.

This is the crux of the thing, dear. It has little to do with the specifics of the "naughty" encounter and much to do with the specifics of your long-distance love. Forgive yourself the moment of humanity and move on. You were never at risk.

Most sincerely,
Brent

Thanks Brent, your completely correct. . .humanity, indeed I am flawed. And what makes it worse is the paid prostitute factor, as that is essentially morally wrong, but i need to accept my mistakes and learn and move on.

I hope you meant harmless rather harmful btw!

H-

I don't come here to talk about morality, but I've never really seen anything inherently immoral about prostitution as long as it is not coerced.

And I did mean that guilt is harmful...very harmful and entirely unnecessary. It is the most dispensable of all human emotions.

Take care-
