Visceral fat and High Fructose Corn Syrup
« on: April 28, 2009, 09:33:39 pm »
Reading an article on slate today and ran across a refernce to a recent study on high fructose corn syrup and it's effect on Visceral fat accumulation. The study had volunteers drink a glass of kool-aid at every meal, with half using HFCS and the other can sugar. At the end of the study both had similar weight gains but the group that ingested HFCS had increased visceral fat then those who only used cane sugar to sweeten their kool-aid. While the study does not specifically address HIV and HFCS it is still something to ponder.

edit: Forgot to add that the HFCS also showed increased LDL Cholesteral and lowered insulin sensitivity.

I meant to answer this earlier but forgot. Sorry.

From the research I have done, the problem could be one of two things - or both of them.

First, there are those who say high fructose corn syrup, with its genetically enhanced creation, could be causing metabolic changes in our bodies.

The second is that, because it is cheap, processed food manufacturers started putting high fructose corn syrup into everything they could back in the early 1980s - at about the same time Americans began their love affair with becoming two tons of fun.

One article cites the fact that people are consuming huge amounts of the stuff, much more than they ever did sugar.

Whatever the cause, I think it is safe to say too much corn syrup is bad for you, just as most anything.

This recommendation is from the Mayo Clinic.

If you're concerned about the amount of high-fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners in your diet, consider these tips:
   •   Limit processed foods.
   •   Avoid foods that contain added sugar.
   •   Choose fresh fruit rather than fruit juice or fruit-flavored drinks. Even 100 percent fruit juice has a high concentration of sugar.
   •   Choose fruit canned in its own juices instead of heavy syrup.
   •   Drink less soda.
   •   Don't allow sweetened beverages to replace milk, especially for children.

HUGS,

Mark
