Title: Broken condom
Post by: linn543 on June 07, 2014, 03:48:59 pm
Hi. I've been dating a guy for 5 months now, he is HIV positive and his viral load is undetectable. I am HIV negative, the last test I took was in may 19Th.
Well, our condom broke today, I think it was for a short period. We were doing vaginal sex. I went to the hospital and they gave me PEP, but I'm too scared to take it, because of the side effects. I'm going through some health problems myself, like urine infection and my immunity is really low right now.
He did not cum inside me.
I want to know in your experience what are the risks that I become HIV positive.
Thanks.

HI Linn . You should be fine as long as your partner is undetectable but if you did choose to be on truvada as Prep or PEP and your doctor knows you and your overall health status you should be just fine on the drug . PEP is effective if taken within 72 hours of the exposure .

Given the particulars of your circumstance PEP is not recommended in cases with a undetectable partner .

Thank you so much! I'm really anxious about this. I'm not from the US, so regulation here is a bit different. The doctor doesn't know me, he's from the ER, never seen him before. The meds he indicated are Zidovudine, Lamivudine and Tenofovir and I know they are really strong. I'm afraid to take them and go through all the side effects for nothing.
Also, I'm not on PrEP. The health service doesn't provide PrEP where I live. We only use condom and that's it. Given that he is undetectable and he did not cum inside, I know there is low risk, but I'm very anxious right now. I guess if I get infected I'll never forgive myself. I don't know if I'm exaggerating on taking the meds just to feel mentally comfortable about what happened.

Its a slim to none chance HIV would be transmitted from an undetectable person . I personally would not choose PEP nor is it indicated in cases like yours .

Just to ease your mind further, my boyfriend (undetectable, on meds) and I (negative, now on  Truvada for PrEP four about 4 months) without protection (with and without ejaculation) and I'm always negative (tested as recently as last week). The chances of transmission with your partner being undetectable are INCREDIBLY low. You should Google some of the information available to ease your mind. :)
