I have been tested a few times and I am negative. However after each test the medic stressed that to be sure I should wait for about 8-12 weeks after my last sexual contact with a positive person before being tested. Is this period correct or should it be longer before getting tested again

Jeremy, testing is 13 weeks past the last time you had unprotected sex (anal or vaginal) . It doesn't matter if you had sex with someone positive or status unknown.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.
Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.
Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.
"Sexual contact" can mean many different things. As long as you are using condoms for intercourse, you will avoid hiv infection. It doesn't matter whether a person is hiv positive or not when you use condoms. Condoms prevent hiv transmission. It really is that simple.
