Don't know if its hit the English papers yet.  The paintings are by important modern masters such as Picasso, Max Beckmann and Max Liebermann and may be worth 1 billion or more.  They were among the "degenerate" art the Nazis confiscated and either destroyed or sold abroad, and were in the apartment of one of the men who was charged with doing so....

Yesterday I saw a documentary about Anna Mae Wong and there was some coverage of her time in Berlin.  I am always always amazed when I think about Weimar Berlin as one of the most modern, creative and sophisticated cities in the world, and how it all went to hell soon afterwards....

I saw this picture by Alfred Eisenstaedt I'd never seen before: of Marlene Dietrich, Wong and Leni Riefenstahl in 1928.

The awful thing was both where happening at the same time as  Weimar Berlin was doing its thing National Socialism was growing. In many ways Party life blinded those involved to the ever creeping menace.

However its my first choice in the go backward time machine.
