Lotion with Condom
« on: September 24, 2006, 08:49:33 pm »
Hi:

Just yesterday, I had insertive anal intercourse with a man.  I used a condom, the problem was that I used Aveeno lotion instead of water based lube.  It was very, very stupid and I was drunk at the time.

Well, I didn't cum, and the condom didn't break.   The intercourse could not have lasted more than 30 seconds to a minute (he came pretty quick).

I am concerned because I know that lotion breaks down condoms.  I'm scared that the breakdown of the latex may have caused invisible holes that HIV could have slipped through and got on my penis.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

There are NO invisible holes in condoms with the use of an oil base lube. It can however cause a condom to fail. You would have undoubtedly known if the condom would have failed. You did not have a risk. You should as you know always use water base lube.

Thanks Rod.  You've been a real help!  Whew!  That was VERY unwise on my part, and I will try as hard as I can not to do it again.

There is another important issue here. You mention that you were drunk. Mixing sex with excessive drinking is a very dangerous combination. Too many I have known became infected because they were unable to negotiate safer sex while drunk.

The guidelines regarding safer sex are really pretty simple. Always use a latex condom for anal or vaginal intercourse and use only water-based lubes. Stick with that and you're pretty much covered figuratively and literally.

Annual Fear
« Reply #4 on: October 29, 2009, 07:55:48 pm »
Hi all:

I'm a few weeks away from my routine HIV test and I guess I'm just fishing for well-wishing, prayers and support.  The cumulative impact of a lot of "low-risk" encounters (trust me, many), in my opinion warrants testing--which I do on a 6 months basis.

Everytime it comes around test time, I start really worrying.  I start thinking about the cumulative impact of my low-risk encounters: oral sex at orgies (usually w/o ejaculation, but a couple have cum in my mouth w/o my permission), oral sex with a guy I knew was HIV+ w/o ejaculation, but protected anal always.

Recently my friend was diagnosed positive and it stunned me.  I've been really shaken and this is most def affecting me.  What if the condom broke and I didn't know; what if I was the unlucky person who became positive because of oral? what if the finger that was inside my ass was in another person's ass, and they transferred it to me?

Anyway, thanks for listening to me in my fear, and I will give u an update on my status when I'm tested.  Cheers!

I've merged your threads. Please follow our rule and keep all of your entries in this same thread.

As long as you haven't had unprotected anal intercourse, then I don't expect anything other than a negative test result for you. Everything else you mentioned is only theoretically risky, if even that.

Getting tested for HIV is unquestionably an anxiety-provoiking experience. Fortunately fears aren't facts and from what you have reported I expect you will test negative for HIV. We also suggest that anyone who's sexually active ought to have a full STD panel done, at least annually. Other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV.

Cheers and good luck with your test(s).

Thanks Andy!

I was unaware of the "show own posts" tool.  I will do that next time.

One more question before my test:

Most people seroconvert in 4-6 weeks as you say.  Will the oraquick rapid 20 minute finger prick tests be able to detect the antibodies after just 6 weeks, or does that only apply to the other tests?

Thanks

smager,

The six week average seroconversion detection applies to all tests.

You didn't have a risk and you're only testing for peace of mind. We fully expect you to test negative over this incident.

Well, I got my test.  Six weeks on the buzzer since my last low-risk encounter(s).  It was negative, as you predicted.  I understand that to be 100% sure it has to be three months, but this test has relieved me considerably and I am going to wait until next year for my annual STD screen to test again--provided I have no risky encounters like unprotected anal sex, which I do not intend to have.

My friend's diagnosis was fueling my fears and he is the first person I have known to actually go from negative to positive before my eyes.  All of my other friends who are HIV+ have been positive since I have known them.  I think my anxiety about this test was a result of guilt and fear that had nothing to do with real risks, but had to do with realizing that HIV is very real, that even my good friend can get it, and if HE can get it, with all the sex I've had, how could I NOT have it (totally irrational, but the mind is powerful).  Not to mention it was a shock to both of us and I'm not sure I've dealt with that yet.  Add to that the common idea that if you screw around you're "asking" to get something, which I have apparently internalized, the fact that I was infected with MRSA recently and had to be treated with antibiotics, and presto!  Worried well.  I probably should have been more worried about my stress levels and the strain that was putting on my body more than HIV.  I tested negative for gonorrhea and herpes after these encounters which is much easier to get than HIV, but somehow my mind entertained the fact that I might be one of the highly unlikely ones to get HIV from oral.

Obviously my problems don't have to do with being infected or actual risks, but dealing with the emotions that come from knowing people who are going through a new diagnosis and seeing a man I love deal with this.  Thank you for all your help and support, but now it's off to talk to people who can help me with these other issues.

smager,

Throw out all the sex-negative messages you've been internalising over the years. They won't do you any good. You can have as much sex as you like with as many people as you like and as long as you're using condoms for intercourse, you'll be ok where hiv is concerned. Don't forget to read through the condom and lube links in my signature line. Remember, a correctly used and stored condom rarely breaks.

None of the STIs - hiv included - are punishments for having sex. They're just bacteria and viruses that can be spread through certain activities. That's ALL they are and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
