Real Exposure to my partners fluids
« on: May 23, 2007, 01:16:58 pm »
Hello there,

I hope anyone could help with this one. I'm feeling very dissapointed now because I neglected the potential risk of doing what i did and probably didn't go on PEP when I should have. My partner is + and we usually take safe precautions when playing. However, on Saturday I was groping, sucking, kissing, licking and biting my partner's nipple during foreplay. I then realized I tasted discharge because the taste was really unique and i saw lactation drizzling out. not sure how much total amount of fluid actually got in. probably one or two drops. i'm upset and would never have thought discharge would ooze out of my partner's nipple..

what concerns me after analyzing the situation was:
1). that i had 3 real tiny stinging open cuts on my lower lip due to cracking of lips (located right at the opening of my mouth but still on the mucous membrane)
2) she has a higher viral load and hasn't gone on meds
3). i've had a pretty bad cold and not sure if this would put more of my vulnerable t-cells, dentritic cells or lympocytes throughout my mouth area (i'm not clear if that would occur when we have a cold)
4). i have dry mouth and probability that i didn't have enough protective saliva around the areas of exposure (lips, front areas of mouth, gums)

i've been scouring the internet for info on this type of exposure and its a tough one. i'm just not sure how much of a danger one or two drops of high viral load breast/nipple fluid smeared on my open cuts and mucous membranes throughout my mouth would be. i guess it would be about the same risk as giving oral sex but coming across breast fluid instead of pre-cum? when i read the studies of oral sex and breastfeeding in africa, i'm a little bit comforted, but i realize everyone's situation factors is not the same.

i called the city clinic, explained my exposure and they said i probably wouldn't need Pep but could go ahead and visit the clinic if i wanted a prescription.. at that time, it was already about 62 hours after exposure so i didn't go. now it's too late.

I really don't want to have ended up making the bad mistake of not going on PEP when I should have. I hope I didn't need to.

I want to THANK all those who have actually read through my concerns and willing to provide a reply that would help give me a better understanding of my concerns. I don't know if I'm being overparanoid or just very realistic. I hope even testing at 3 months wouldnt need to be recommended..

hugs and kind regards,
Al

but what if nipple discharge came into direct contact with my open cuts and mucous membranes?

on another note, the comforting thing i just realized is that the 3 open cuts on my lower lip would be exposed to air while my mouth is slightly open (which was the case because we were heavy breathing)..

since my cuts were located at such an area, do think the air or breathing would inhibit hiv infection if the smeared discharge was resting on my open cut before infection takes place?

Now we both know your cuts were not open wounds and smearing blood now were they? Your cuts were sealed.

goaly,

Not even babies who depend on breast milk for their sustenance are guaranteed of getting hiv from breast milk if their mother is hiv positive. A grown man (or woman) is absolutely NOT at risk from a couple of drops of breast milk, cuts or no cuts. You certainly did not need PEP because of this incident.

All you need to do to protect your negative status is to use condoms every time you have anal or vaginal intercourse. It really is that simple!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

I just hope the both of you are right!

its just that after reanalyzing the exposure and mentally illustrating the nipple discharge come into direct contact with my stinging cuts and my mucous membrane makes me quite concerned.. i just hope my saliva and those enzymes i read about did their job in preventing any transmission.

the whole day my mind has been consumed by these thoughts and im contemplating on whether or not to seek counseling..

You've gotten replies which are well-grounded in HIV science. It doesn't matter what thoughts and feelings your mind may continue to come up with.

YOU WERE NOT AT RISK FOR HIV TRANSMISSION DURING THIS INCIDENT. Period. End of story.

Get on with your life. No kidding.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
