I'm naked and standing in the wind
« on: September 25, 2006, 08:12:54 pm »
Well, that's how I feel anyway. I haven't been around much the past few days.

I had a Little problem with my computer. I was having trouble with it locking up because a video I had downloaded apparently had a virus. It didn't harm my Mac, but it knocked the stuffing out of the windows media player and, as a result, slowed down the maching because the computer kept trying to play the video, which I could not find because it suspiciously disappeared as soon as it was downloaded. I looked everywhere, even in places it should never have been. No luck.

The video, or whatever it was I downloaded, was hiding in my computer. It was making me grouchy, because it was slowing it down and, for a Mac, that is really unusual That's what I get for using microsoft anything.

Long story short - I decided to reload the programs, starting with OS 10.2 Panther. Well, I goofed.

Instead of hitting archive, I hit re-program, or whatever it said. Net result was it erased everything on my computer. Everything. There was nothing left, nada, zilch, zero.

No addresses in the e-mail address book.

No bookmarks.

No photos from Montreal.

No tax records. (Thank goodness I kept hard copies.)

No backup disc, cause I have never needed them before.

It also erased my Quicktime Pro program, which I had just bought and paid for. Now, I have to contact Apple to have them send it to me again,

So, I have spent the past three days trying to enter stuff back into the computer. One problem, I have no clue where I put the hard copy of the e-mail addresses I had. I may have disposed of it.

Oh joy. Well, at least it got rid of the problem with the windows media player. It also got rid of the media player program.

It could have been worse. It didn't catch fire, like what happened to one of our fellow members here.

Sometime, computers are a real pain in the butt.

HUGS,

Mark

Jan, what kind of price do you have on the picture with Bailey and ???? in bed? You're on a roll with sales so I'm sure you could make another sale.  :D

Mark,

I don't know what most people here are talking about so I am not going there ;D

just some advice perhaps:

a backup disk... I know, but one needs to get burned a few times before getting one; and you can get a LaCie (example) with free backup software you can program. No more headaches.

If you want to play windows videos but avoid the player, download VLC (find it on Macupdate.com) will play anything (almost) and you won't have to load anything from the darkside.

my 2.5 cents

Hey all,

Well, it just happens I have the photo of Bailey and ???? in flagrante delicto on a disc. I guess there is something to be said for having an actual camera that uses film.

As for the going price, well, Jan, Rod, that is negotiable. Let's see, mortgage payment, car payment,  hmmm,  let me do some figuring.

Oh, Lisa, by the way, those accouterments are SOLELY for educational purposes, or for those Catholics out there, ecumenical purposes. Really, they are. I promise. Cross my heart.  8)  ;)

Pat, thanks for the information/advise. I will definitely check out the Macupdate.com

It's good to be back.

HUGS,

Mark
