Title: Condom ripped with prostitute
Post by: idiotabroad on August 07, 2012, 04:25:39 pm
Hi all,
I'm 18 years old, and in my drunken stupidity while on a holiday with friends in Spain, I had sex with a street prostitute. She gave me condom protected fellatio, followed by protected vaginal sex. But at some point during this vaginal sex the condom ripped exposing the tip of my penis, in my honest opinion the exposure could have been 5 seconds to about 4 minutes.
I have read other threads, but wanted to make one completely specific to my situation. Could anyone estimate (perhaps numerically) how likely I am to develop HIV? And if it isn't too much bother could someone estimate my likelyhood of developing an STI too? (Sorry, I know it's a HIV forum).
Also, I have a girlfriend, would it be possible for me to have completely safe protected sex before testing? Is unprotected oral sex safe?
The exposure occured 6 days ago, and the rest of my holiday and first few days back have been spent in fear. I'm so worried. Thank you anyone for your responses.

First off, there are NO reliable stats to determine your numerical level of risk. Too many variables between the SAME two people from act to act, let alone different partners.

You have had a risk, yes. But a low level one. I have been on this forum nearly ten years and have yet to see a male test positive over a ripped condom during vaginal sex.

But you need to test at three months, of course.

In the meantime, you should wear a condom with your girlfriend of course.

As for her giving you oral, that depends on you. Newly infected people often have a soaring viral load before the body produces enough antibodies to temporarily fight it down. The risk to your girlfriend if you are infected is vanishingly small but I would hesitate to call it zero, depending of course also on her oral hygiene. Your call.

Thank you a lot for your response and I appreciate the help.
Another question; you said I need to test at three months, I have read other forums which said you can get a 95% reliable test at 12 weeks, is that correct? Naturally I would also follow this up with a test at three months.
One thing I am also concerned about is having protected sex with my girlfriend and the same condom problem occuring and leaving her at risk, but I understand I'll have to decide on that on my own, thank you.

Most people test seroconvert within 21 days of exposure. A test at SIX weeks is all but definitive.

A test at TWELVE weeks IS definitive (unless you are on chemo or have another immune issue which prevents your body from developing antibodies - and you would know if you did.)

Ann has, in her signature line (note to self, gussy up my signature line) links about condom use and misconceptions. Putting one on properly, using the correct lubrication, holding onto the base when withdrawing, etc will minimize (to the degree that essentially means "prevent") breakage in the future.

Ok again thank you for the info. Sorry for asking on an HIV forum but would you have any general knowledge of my likelyhood of developing an STI from this situation? Understandable if not.

Also, the prostitute rubbed my penis with a wipe (possibly anti-septic, I don't know) before putting on the condom which eventually broke and was replaced by another, does this lower my chance of developing HIV?

You had a low level risk during which your penis was protected until the condom broke. It's harder to transmit HIV from female to male than the other way around. It was a single brief incident. All of that leads me to expect you will likely test negative.

12 or 13 weeks (3 months) are the same. A negative at either is conclusive.

Don't make this more complicated than it is. I expect you to come out of this ok.
