So in 8 days, I will turn 40.
Growing up, when my father turned 40, we got grounded and sent to our room because we wished my father a happy 40th birthday ... When my mother turned 40, she had her first tattoo done and a party. So I grew up with polar attitudes to turning 40.
Seen plenty of articles on turning 40 over the years and people throwing parties or feeling sorry for themselves, but now it's my turn, and I have to be honest, I am feeling 'Meh' about it. Although back in 1998 I honestly had not expected to live this long, I don't see the importance or any real milestone in turning 40; it's just another year.
Besides seeing the first few grey pube hairs and having to trim my nose hair more often than getting a haircut, am I missing something?

The big 40. I looked forward to it with enthusiasm. Same hype as you mentioned. I actually spent the day flying to work so there was no celebration. And strangely enough, felt exactly the same the day after as I did before.
50 past in the exact same style, going to see what I can achieve in 13 months when I hit 60.
Getting older, should just ban it

Get a tattoo, mom knows best
You have 8 days to decide what and where

Although I would not say never, so far I've never seen anything I would permanently on my body.

Yup should be banned. :)
Agreed, its just hype and I don't think or feel like doing anything for my 40th, it's just another day.

Age really is just a number -- though, there are some physical realities that come with it. I just keep on doing what I've done until I can't -- I still play tennis against folks in the 20's and 30's. I even win some of them, though when I lose, I'm generally making them work hard to beat me. (of course, they likely jump out of the bed the next day, where as I wake up feeling every point... LOL)
Be that as it may -- I decided to turn my "big-0" birthdays into memories.
I turned 50 in the Serengeti of Tanzania.
I plan to turn 60 in 2024 in The Galapagos Islands
Haven't given much thought to 70 yet -- perhaps Tahiti....
The way I see it -- getting older beats the alternative!! Celebrate every birthday with gusto!!

I relate to the "meh" attitude in relation to my recent birthdays (I'm 36 now). I liked what someone replied on trying to make it memorable trips, but this could also mean memorable in your style - things like just chilling out, eating something you like with a few special peopld, and not just trips or big parties. I think we sometimes (me at least) fear cultural or social expectations on these "special dates".
I hope you find yourself enjoying this new moment in your life!
Wishing you the Best :)

ojo. Hello Jim, you are still a “baby”. Keep up the good work you do on here for the next 40 years…now, just now, I realized that I had to retiré exactly, on my 40 birthday, August 21 was my last day in the office, due to my blindness…anyway, 40 it’s a good number. If you were Mexican, you wouldn’t want to turn 41…good luck

Thanks. Yeah, I think there is a culture regarding birthdays being important that I've never really understood or felt.
To be honest the highlight of the day might end up being a ham sandwich and that suits me fine ;D
I don't think ill regret not doing anything for my 40th.

LOL - Another 40 years of telling people to use condoms & PrEP and telling the "Good AIDS" folks that no matter what they say they did not acquire HIV from their cat, toilet seat or their alien encounters, no thanks ;D

Wow. Not sure I would have the energy for more kids.
Seventeen, is the number of years between me and my mother... well sixteen and a few months.

The biggest thing I did on my birthday this year was climbing a ladder and going into a house through a window to rescue a cat and then taking a door off its hinges from inside the locked room.

Happy belated birthday Jim on turning the Big 40! Sure is a major life milestone.
I turned 50 recently myself.
The 40s is one of those decades where people start telling themselves that their "old", take to the couch, become less active.
I think make your 40s, the fittest decade of your life! Get fit, strong & in good shape, it will benefit you in every way imaginable.
Enjoy Jim! Lol I was I was 40 again! ;D
