We're not supposed to be above freezing for over a week.  I don't mind, I want a massive snow fall this year.  I'm heading in to Winter without injuries so I might get to enjoy it.  Perhaps I can finally make another huge snow fort?

Here we go !  Looks like the upper to lower mid west will get the worst of this one.
Wore my shorts today , I think for the last time .
The Cape is supposed to get only rain ,but still cold !

One of those ocean storms will kick our ass soon though.
Everyone take care and NO FUCKING FALLING !

Believe it or not it's snowing outside, but it's also 35F which means it's colder aloft a bit.

(it's currently NOT snowing at Granny's so I guess Miss P wins again!)

Its 26 here and I am going to have go out in it in a bit . My friend Ron is in a bit of a pickle and needs my help . He had hernia surgery and they did a Laparoscopic surgery but the problem was that they had to fix 6 holes and I think it left him feeling like he has been shanked 6 times and since he is rather large man he is in a massive amount of pain and truly needs assistance while his husband is at work . Also ... it feels good and free to call him my friends husband since they got married . It brings a smile to my heart every time I say it .

It's 43 and raw out here on the Cape . Nasty !!  I feel for your friend Jeff,
I had a bi-lateral hernia repaired , I think in 97. It was the old fashion way with two big incisions
The pain was miserable , and was constipated . My business looked like the Bride of Frankenstein
VERY large and swollen , Shame I was in too much pain to use it !!

Betty said she needs a hobby , maybe she can knit everyone underwear...
Every body keep warm !

One of our winter predictions is in! (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/weather/stories/Hurricanes-18th-Annual-Long-Range-Winter-Outlook-282407431.html) -- you can see our last five seasons accumulations (2009-10 was our #1 in recorded history, and last season was #2 or #3) but this season while still over our yearly average might not be as bad as last year.

SUMMARY:

Average winter temp: 31.8 degrees (3 below "normal")
Snow 40-45” (“normal” is 22”)
HIGHLIGHTS
*COLDER THAN LAST WINTER
*COLDEST SINCE 2002-03
*>40” SNOW 4th of last 6 YEARS
*FEWER DAYS WITH SNOW THAN LAST WINTER
*AT LEAST 2 STORMS OF 12”+
*POSSIBLY MORE SNOW SOUTH OF PHILA.

>>> so I need to majorly stock up on snow/ice salt when I go home to my parent for Thanksgiving and have use of a car.

I'm so jealous.....I want all that snow.  We only got the cold with a little snow.  I NEVER whine about Winter, I save all that for the nasty hot Summers.  ;)

Plus, it's the time of the year when I can enjoy my nice flannel sheets.  I bought a really expensive set last week in anticipation.

I know you like winters Greg.  I don't mind this time of year, though I really like the autumn weather better (the temps in the 50's and 60's).  Until, that is, there's a shit ton of snow that has to be removed in order to get out of the driveway.  Though we are supposed to get a snowblower before the heavier snow hits.  And speaking of that, this is really not a good time for the broken leg because I can't help to clear the snow.  My housemate had to clear that stuff we just got.  And it was not forecasted ahead of time.  Totally unexpected.

Speaking of flannel sheets (of which I am a fan), I got into fleece sheets a couple years ago.  Last year I got a set that is so soft, and maintains that softness even after multiple washes.  They are a little more expensive than flannel, but I love them.

I would love to see what Sac looks like with snow. It would be so pretty. I really wish for some heavy rains and snow. But it's unlikely.

Well, I always like me a little winter -- so long as it only comes when I want it!!  I do not want this cold just now.
We are sailing out of New York on Tuesday aboard the brand new Quantum of the Seas cruise ship.  It is forecasted to be in the 30's as we set sail for a 3-night cruise to no where.
I've only ever brought a heavy coat on one cruise before -- Alaska (and that was only because we were going for a dog sled ride on a glacier).  Oh well -- the main point was to experience this new ship -- I guess we'll see all of the inside of it (hope the casino is a generous one)!!

Have fun on your cruise.  We're also taking a 2 day trip.  To Louisville, KY of all places.  ;)  All that way for a damn pottery shop.  OH well, at least I can interact with my southern boys.  I've always been highly attracted to my southern KY boys.  The dumber the better even.

We got down into the 20's in Central Texas, and expected to have sunny weather starting Saturday. WRONG! It was misting as I planned a hike in the nearby state park, and turned into a downright drizzle. So we've not been hiking, just driving carefully, and although it warmed up a bit it's getting cold again. Still drizzling for 2 days now.

I feel cheated out of Fall. We should be having what you Northerners refer to as Indian Summer about now.

Officially, Louisville got 3 inches.  But, the city/county is huge and some places got 5 inches.  We were trying to think of the earliest accumulating snow.  A few years ago, we got an inch or so on thanksgiving night.

We are now bracing for lows in the single digits tonight.  School was out today, as the storm hit overnight.  I bet school is canceled or delayed tomorrow, with the bitter cold and freezing roads.

The snow was heavy and collapsed the protective net over the pond.

It's 17F here right now with 21mph winds and the sky is dumping snow exponentially.  We are due to get 8-10 inches this evening and overnight.  Tomorrow the temp will be going down to between 0F and -10T.  I DON'T WANT TO SEE ANY WHINING ABOUT BEING COLD!

Oh, I was watching the Today Show and they were showing what was trending on twitter.  At the bottom is JCPS.  That is our school system, Jefferson County Public Schools.  We are one of the bigger school districts in the country, but it must not be as hard to trend, as I thought.  I guess the same as getting in the NYT Best Seller's list.

We have goldfish and koi.  We worried, too.  Here, they need at the bare minimum 18 inches depth, but we are tad over 2 feet deep, now. They all survived last year, when it was just 18 inches deep.  They go dormant and hide away in caverns.  Can't feed them, even if they wanted it, or it will likely hurt or kill them under 40 degree water temp.  Got to keep a hole in ice, if it freezes over.  Our fountain kept a hole, but some use heaters.

Betty always unfortunately wins the prize. It IS a good time to stay put with your broken, broken bones. Just smile and offer hot cocoa when your roommate comes in from the cold if you can. You still can be her hero. lol.

Ted, good luck this year. It might work out ok. We need 30" pond depth here and had a few fishy floaters over the years. More consistent frog fatalities but they came in on there own and took their chances.  :'( At least they had a beautiful summer... well except those who were swallowed whole by bullfrogs and snakes.

Ahhh... winter.  >:(

The wind, rain, and the thunder storms, made it;s way through here at about 1:00 this afternoon, with some tonado warnings in effect for this area. They have since expired.

Our rain gauge shows about 2 inches of rain, and the current temp is 68 degrees.  Cooler temps are on the way !

I definitely think we chose the wrong time to go on vacation.  We walked mere blocks along the Ohio River before being chilled to the bone.  Guess we'll be spending the evening in the gayest little hotel room I've ever witnessed.  I truly thought it was a joke when I first saw all the gawdy decor and this had the highest ratings of any hotel in the area.

But then again, it is where it is.   :)  stay warm all.

Mine is like this -- fyi, I have owned this for over 20 years and have taken very good care of it so it's still in fine order. It was a wise investment when I first move up north. I only wear it on sub-Arctic days like this.

Now I need to go find my long underwear!

DanO,
I assume that the women are wearing that but with Oregon I'm not so sure.

Init,
I prefer the Carhartt. Never knew it came in pink. I wore mine last winter while visiting Miss P. She must have been biting her tongue.

Anyway, I see that just south of Buffalo they are getting lake affect snow up the ying-yang. 6' or more! How does one deal with that?

Buffalo, NY just got SEVENTY inches of snow. If they get six more inches from the current story it will surpass the all time record for 24-hour snow set in Silver Lake, CO in April 1921. (actually this will happen at a place about 15 miles south of downtown Buffalo)

Being from Buffalo, I am reminded, while watching the Weather Channel, why I moved down here to Florida 34 years ago. !

It's interesting how these snow bands set up in an area.  I am very familiar with the areas that are getting hit hard,...  Lancaster, Cheektowaga, Dunkirk/Fredonia...

I've seen 3 feet of snow fall in Buffalo, and barely an inch of snow 7 miles north.

The bands are supposed to shift north by tomorrow, so Downtown Buffalo,  may be getting it soon.

Finally have time.  I am going to text you a pic, Jeff, tomorrow, of my front yard.  We got over a foot and are still under a winter storm watch.  The temp is 17F and the wind is going around 25mph.  At least it's not Buffalo, that looks like a total shit storm.  Some people have no power there.  Jeez.

I did clear off the porch three times with a big broom.  But I haven't seen the outdoor kitty today and am worried sick about him.  I hope he's alright.

Perhaps it's because the Ohio River area sits in a valley but there have been nasty winds for 3 days now.  It's downright bitter.  We only have 2 antique malls and one wine shop left on our WVA adventure before heading home.

We managed to find some Hull pottery that was missing from the other Greg's collection.  I was quite amused as he was balking at the cost.  2 days in an expensive hotel, several hundred miles of travel, endless miles of walking and bickering over a few dollars?.....priceless.

I don't negotiate, I simply pay what they're asking and move on.

Being in an area that I will always consider home has brought about great memories and a renewed calm.  Did a lot of driving from the Parkersburg, Ravenswood and Charleston corridor.

We took all back roads to get here but will pretty much insist we take the interstate to get home.

It was 41 degrees this morning, for our low. The house got down to 63, so I cheated and put the heat on for a few minutes, and warmed it up to 66.

63 is cold, when you get out of a hot shower !   ;D

It was played quite a bit on the Weather channel.  It's amazing how the frigid air sucked the moisture, right out of Lake Erie :

Hope to stay snow-free until Christmas eve with a nice light and fluffy 4".

Actually NOAA has winter storm warnings all the way down to the North Carolina border -- the Poconos down here will get a foot of snow. But from the coast inland 100-150 miles is all rain.

So where is winter anyway? Not complaining mind you. Only 2 or 3 dustings of snow so far. Hopefully this weather will continue as Im not sure if I could take another one like last year. It's going to get a little colder soon but no big storms in sight!

It was in the mid 50's yesterday and around 50 today. Got outside and did some pruning and got my sad body moving.

Snow storm last night. Flurries all day today. Shores of Lake Geneva Switzerland. Cold arrived. I was waiting for sub zero so I could defrost my freezer. Finally did it today.
Sad all that meat I chucked.  Took a good long time to clean the fridge.  Had to clean behind all the door seals and shit.  Fridges are not designed like they used to be. Not average consumer ones.  There are a number of details that should be easier to clean. pieces that should be thick rounded safety glass or thick plastic and thats it. this model has some stupid ass design angles and corner and mixes of plastic and glass. Thinnish plastic.  i was a dumbass not to buy frost free when I bought this 7 years ago.   I need a 1000 bucks for an easier to maintain model.... Oh well, maybe next year... Its very clean for the moment.

We're still raking the endless amount of leaves that keep falling.  It's hard to keep up with it. Every day the patio is covered an inch thick !   ::)   I need some cooler weather.

Something between 55 and 60 for the highs would be nice ! We're still at that fine borderline, where the AC has to be turned on for a few minutes.

I just let my leaves blow into the neighbors yard.

a couple of Summers ago, I spent the typical full day raking my mother's entire yard.  The entire neighborhood has those god awful huge maple trees which produce about 10 huge lawn bags full of leaves.  I was totally overheated and grateful to have completed the chore and went inside to suck up some air conditioning.  I stood at the window wiping myself with a cold rag admiring my hard work.

The neighbors on the back side watched me working tirelessly the entire day as they enjoyed their beer and smokes.  The ignorant bastard then fired up his leaf blower and proceded to blow all his leaves under our shared fence.  After watching for a few minutes in disbelief and witnessing my anger level reach the upper limits, I decided to battle him.

I ran down to the post and borrowed a leaf blower and promptly returned the gesture.  I was so pissed that I purposely made sure that they were landing on their family and guests.  I just smiled wickedly as they were yelling and cussing at me to stop.  Didn't happen until I didn't have a single leaf remaining.

There's a very bad ice storm arriving this morning in the Northeast but fortunately I'm avoiding it by 50 miles or so and just getting rain because I'm closer to the coast.

Then the temperatures go to the upper 60's on Sunday before plummeting to 12F a couple of days later.

Here comes that polar vortex....

http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/ready-to-shiver-arctic-air-to-put-america-on-ice/ar-BBhsqlY?ocid=mailsignout

Ready to shiver? Arctic air to put America on ice

WASHINGTON — Much of America is about to get the Arctic shivers.

Meteorologists are forecasting frigid polar air will plunge much of the central and eastern U.S. into sub-freezing temperatures next week.

National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Kocin, an expert on winter storms, said it is a classic pattern of massive blasts of Arctic air hitting just about everyone east of the Rockies. He said it will rival last year's January Arctic outbreak that introduced the phrase "polar vortex" to America.

"This is going to be a big cold outbreak, pretty windy as well," Kocin said. "It's going to drive all the way down south."

Kocin predicts a small Midwestern band of intense snow along with the cold, with some also in parts of the Northeast.

Even though it is several days in advance, meteorologists are pretty sure about this forecast. Kocin said many of the best computer models are saying the same thing.

This is all coming from cold air escaping from the Arctic. The center of the cold air will be around Quebec, Canada.

The fridge was bare so I decided to take the 20 minute trip to the store.

1) realized I forgot my wallet 15 minutes into the drive.
2) arrived 40 minutes later to a packed store
3) wasn't paying attention to the forecast
4) not a flake in the sky until I walked out, a snow squall dropped about an inch while I shopped.
5) 20 mph all the way home. lol.

Yes, Miss P., 60 tomorrow, and down to 2 Wednesday night with 1-3" of snow on Tuesday or Thursday, I forget. Still better than last year and am hoping Ray is wrong!

Too bushed to cook.  :P

Yup, Sligo is in Ireland.
As for the accent, there was no sound on yur clip.

Now if you want a hot accent, pour 20yrs of Northern Ireland, add a dash of NY, dilute with 20yrs So Cal, and shake. (lightly).

Well,  We're certainly not going to get the blizzards and snow, that's forecast for up north, but it sure is windy today !!  If it was summertime,  I would think that a small tropical wave was passing through.

The Tampa Bay area, is still ahead of the front, that will be passing through here in 4 or 5 hours, and throughout the night.

http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/weather/klystron-9-radar/local.map.html/Florida.html

The good thing, we got to go swimming in the community pool yesterday, and we also went today.  The pool temp was about 80 degrees.  ( heated)

And both of us really need the spa today !! So,.. we sat in there for about 30 minutes.

The rest of the week looks a little to cool for the pool. !

WEATHER ALERT!!!

Miss P. and I will get a mix of snow and rain. It will arrive in Philly at 9:42PM. !2:17AM here but I'm not staying up.

Total snowfall will be 3" in Philly (I'm sure the "official" total reported at the airport will be closer to 4") and we should get 4" here.

First need for a shovel this winter and it's going to be wet and heavy but not that big of a deal.

End of Accuweathermark report but I reserve the right to alter the forecast after the 5:15 local news.

our latest NWS briefing package (http://www.erh.noaa.gov/phi/briefing/packages/current_briefing.pdf) shows the city proper getting only 1-2" downtown and points south, while the northern sections will get 2-3". But then it's supposedly going to change over to rain after 2AM (go figure) which I will assume means that when I wake up there won't be anything to shovel.

It's been snowing hard here for the last hour, but it's 36F so it's not sticking. The snow/rain line on radar is just 25-30 miles south of the city. I'm not expecting much from this one but we shall see.

We hadn't gotten any measurable snow this month, until tonight.  The last time we didn't get any measurable snow in January was in like 1932.

Two days ago, I took this photo of hyacinth bulbs already popping up, after a few sunny days in the mid-50's.

Tonight, we got this, which was not expected.  I live about 12 miles from downtown Louisville.  We went downtown for Brian's birthday dinner.  No snow downtown.  I love snow.  We got some at Halloween.  We got some at Thanksgiving.  Didn't get any for Christmas, which I always love with the Christmas lights.

Official totals:

Center City 1.3"
Airport 1.0"

but evidently it transitioned to all rain here at 2am so I'm only left with slush, but right when I went to bed around midnight it was snowing really hard and with the largest snowflakes I've ever seen. Like the size of a quarter.

Oh, and there's another smaller "clipper" system coming through on Monday.

One good thing about a winter storm ,and no power
you can just put your food on the back porch and nothing goes rotten !
So used to living through hurricanes in the south , took me a while to figure this out.

I have a great big cooler with legs and a built in bottle opener
has a new home next to my back door ! Empty out the freezer to the cooler,
and the legs keep it high enough to keep out the varmints.

Ha ha… my snow totals are getting lowered. Evidently there will be a quicker tapering off on the western side of the storm. So now I’m seeing 6-10” or 10-14” predictions depending on source.

But anything east of me is still getting screwed. Whew! might dodge a bullet (slightly) if it's less than a foot.

It's already snowing here lightly right now, "part one" of the storm before it goes offshore and strengthens this evening.

Not sure what happened here before the snow but there is a coating of ice underneath all the snow.  I could barely get into the vehicle to warm it up in advance of my trek to the city.  I suddenly like this big suv even less when you can't figure out how to scrape the windows that sit so far from the ground.  Hoping by leaving it run for an hour does the trick.

I agree with DanO's assessment. lol.
And why are you playing with a cactus anyway?

--------

Well, it's been snowing lightly almost the entire day. So far 1/2"!

I've heard so many different snow totals that I can't keep track any longer. Anywhere from 15-36". I'm thinking at the very least we will see 20" but the wind is supposed to be between 50-60 mph for hours and that worries me more. If we lose power it could be days before we get it back. Our generator will keep the house heated, the fridge running, tv/internet (if we are lucky), and a few light bulbs so it could be worse. Getting up in the middle of the night to add more gas to the generator isn't fun either but at least I have Kenny to do that. ;)

It should start to really get wound up by midnight and continue to blast Granny til at least noonish with the heaviest of the wallop.

Good luck with the winds Bubba!!

Miss P should get at least 8-10". I hope she is not too disappointed.

The Weather Channel is giving out WILDLY different information than National Weather Service is doing -- one of them is going to be not only seriously wrong but borderline negligent.

The lame thing about the Weather Channel is that they say one thing on TV, another on their web site, then link to NWS official projections and none line up. Mind you, for hurricanes they completely defer to NWS/NHC so I fail to understand why they do not do the same for a full-on blizzard.

Miss P's favorite weather site (WxRisk) is calling for 12-16" in Richmond on Feb 1-2.  This would rank up there with the most snow I've seen in my almost 15 years in Richmond

You need to read his wording more carefully -- he never makes a forecast that far out, he presents what weather models are showing and discusses the variables. He never makes his own forecast until the system is 2-3 days out. Like any responsible meteorologist does.

With this current storm he was spotting it before it was being mentioned elsewhere, and his current forecasts in the past 24 hours have been very in line with NWS projections.

I did read it -- clearly anything a week out is "iffy" at best, but here is the lead into this post on the WxRisk Facebook page:
"**NOTIFICATION ** POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT ( major ) WINTER STORM FEB 1-2 FOR MUCH VA as well as southern md ... northern / western NC"
He does go on to say all the things that would have be true for this scenario to come to light.

So....  yes, perhaps my use of the wording "calling for" was incorrect -- however, he is throwing it out as a potential.
Given the lack of any real winter weather down here -- I'll happily take it.  I can hunker down and watch the Patriots beat the Seahawks whilst the snow accumulates.

They completely busted the forecast for Philadelphia and almost all of New Jersey. It snowed a lot, but hardly anything accumulated. I've not gone outside yet to shovel but I'd be surprised if it's two inches here.

The NWS claims on twitter to have adjusted the forecast at 10PM to show the corrected amounts. Which is a lie because the mayor at 10PM said the latest NWS was still showing a "revised" 6-10 inches of snow and blah blah blah this and that would be closed.

OK...

At least my fridge is fully stocked with food.

I wish we would get that much snow.  I still have my huge fire pit ready for a huge snowfall.  I love spending time building a fort around it several feet high then lighting a fire. With a Built in cooler for your beverages.

Just fished shoveling. Kenny did the bulk of it with the snowblower and helped with the walkways. I did my best in three 20 minute spans. It was a lot of snow but luckily it was light powder. Still exhausted.lol.

I slightly overestimated the amount. Our official total was 19" so this doesn't compare with the 36" we got last winter.

had to crawl out like a slug, good thing I had my shovel to help pull me out !
only 5'4" but still..... lot of snow !

We had a horrific coating of thick ice on everything this morning.  I didn't even realize we were supposed to get freezing rain.  After spending about 20 minutes breaking into my vehicle to head to work at 4:00 am, I was met with a click click click.  A damn dead battery.

I hadn't started my 31 year old chevy truck for a while and was sure it would be in vain.  Unfortunately, it fired right up.  So I had to spend 45 minutes removing all the snow and ice off of it.

Well THAT sounds like a fun morning. When living in Minnesota during my senior high school year I had a VW Bug. It never failed to start up. The problem was that I had to scrape the INSIDE of the windshield most of the winter and wire open the heat from underneath the car. It didn't seem to make much difference.

Other winter news... Our kitchen window today:

hopefully it will be dry snow this time , much easier to clean up.
got up to 40 yesterday ,and some melted, then got a light dusting this morning.

Any one else notice the metal parts in your body get cold ?
I was shoveling snow the other day my knees started to ache bad
thought I pushed them lifting the heavy snow, but
I think both knees froze ! they stopped hurting after I warmed up.
This has happened before but not as bad ,forgot to ask the ortho doc about it.

The latest local weather report says we will probably get between 3-6" Saturday into Sunday. By Monday and Tuesday night the temps will be around -7 and -25 with the windchill!! I can't even remember when was the last time we've seen that here.

Normally I would worry about my precious garden but since we have had about 35" of snow that barely had a chance to melt I think the "snow insulation" will keep much of it safe.

Meanwhile Wumpella is basking in warmth and battling the cactuses that he claims are so dangerous. Does he use a lasso? Dunno.

oh, and the storm later in the week could be a doozy... or not.

M, your forecast sounds exactly like ours.  We're under a winter storm warning starting tomorrow at 7am through Sunday.  It's lake effect snow.  Wind gusts up to 40mph, temperatures in the negatives.  I'm going to try to,fashion a better kitty shelter so the kitty (or kitties) can somewhat stay out of the frigid temps.

Yes. One was here first and has his own box under our porch. I bought him a warmer so he can stay somewhat warm.  The other cat came later and he sleeps in the igloo with straw in it.

It's frigid out with wind chills at -20F.  At least the winds have died down for the most part.   Yesterday was so nasty I couldn't even stand to smoke (which I do outside).

At least the cats are taken care of.  I had bought a "warmer"on Amazon a couple months ago and it's been invaluable.  I put it in the microwave for 4 & 1/2 minutes and it stays warm for about 4-5 hours.  The cats love to curl up on it inside the box.

Same here. We've had winds up to 55mph at the airport and tonight into the morning we may break our 1888 record and go to 0F with -25 wind chills.

What sucks is I have an 11am doctor appointment which involves a mile of walking (1/2 mile each way from the subway station). Not looking forward to that.

Then more snow coming on Tuesday, though we only got 1.5" last night so basically nothing.

Looks like central Kentucky is going to get hammered with this upcoming storm. Philly's getting 5-8" per NWS warning, higher amounts south of here in DC/Baltimore. Ours doesn't arrive until early Tuesday morning I believe.

Huge amount of winter storm warnings up on NWS's site. http://www.weather.gov/

Latest forecasts show Louisville getting 8-12 inches, with up to 15 inches south.  Even a foot on the KY/TN line.  Bitter cold temps for the week, so the snow won't be going anywhere.  This has shifted north, with southern Indiana getting up to 8 inches.

Louisville should be able to handle this.  Farther south, I imagine they will have huge problems.  I just hope the power stays on.  It flickered earlier, due to the high winds.

I was hoping we were going to avoid winter altogether in Northwest Arkansas, but no luck. We finally got hit last night.  Its -7c now and we got about 10cm last night. Not nearly as much as some northern states but enough to shut everything down until we can get our hair dryers out and clear the streets.  ;)

3F at 7am when I woke up, and now I'm reading we'll go to 1F Friday morning. Still on track for ~6 inches of snow tonight/tomorrow, though one model evidently is shifting the storm 50 miles further south so I might only get 2 inches. :P

For extra credit the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire recorded a wind gust of 141mph yesterday. :-X

Richmond is expecting 8-12".  Our first measurable snow of the season.  Should start late this afternoon and end tomorrow morning.  My mother is leaving RI to come visit tomorrow -- bringing the damned snow south with her!!
The grocery stores are being overrun, as I speak

Oh well -- Sid and I head to New Orleans on Thursday, then onto a cruise ship on Saturday -- goodbye winter -- for a little while anyway.

I guess we have at least 8 inches.  I will have to measure.  They just cancelled school for tomorrow.  The plows are having a hard time keeping up and the salt stuff doesn't work as well in these temps.  Plus, we have all those suburban neighborhoods and even rural areas.  You drive 20 miles out of the city and there is farmland.

I imagine school will be out just about all week.  Even if the snow gets under control, they are calling for air temps of NEGATIVE 10 later in the week, with wind chills of -20 to -25.  Time for a tropical getaway.  I love the snow, but not the cold.

We had complete white outs two days ago with snow emergencies issued, so no one was supposed to be on the road anyway.

It's 4F right now and will be colder than hell for at least the next two weeks.  I need to move to a warmer state also Init.  If you find a sugar daddy, see if he has a brother, or sister.

By the way, we have about two feet of snow.

 8)  I don't have a winter wonderland of snowfall to show you all, but today Ed and I went to A. L. Anderson Park.  This park is about 4 miles north of us, and on Lake Tarpon. It a great park to walk in, as it has a little bit of hill to it, and you really feel the burn in the legs

So,  We got a good walk in today !!   Lots of families were out, there were some flying kites today.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.  The "tied" part stuck out to me.  Is the boxer tied up most of or all day?  When I see this, the dogs are not socialized and barely get any attention.  They often wait around for food and water, so that makes them very territorial.  So, they see a dog walking freely and I imagine it threatens them.  Of course, I don't know the situation, but the tied up part may explain so much.

Ted you might be right.. The boxer is tied outside 24/7 only time he is lose is when he breaks a chain . either way the other family feels bad about this too.  I kept trying to get to copper and the boxer just kept jumping on him so he couldn't get up I tried and tried even fell and hurt my back again over this.. something I will never forget watching copper hollering for help and me not being able to get to him. I have another 16 yr old little dog I will  make sure she never goes up there as one bite from him she would be gone!

We hit a record low/high today.  Whoot!!!  we hit 4 but it's quickly dropping.  It was -12 this morning when I left work without the windchill.  And of course, I needed fuel.  I debated on waiting but I always start to panic when it's on 1/4 tank.  So I stood there in the freezing cold hoping it'd be quick.

Even this winter luving fool is getting tired of this bitter cold not to mention the ridiculous heating bills.  I do a little cringe every time I hear that money soaking furnace kick on.  My heat bill last March was $660 so I have to wait and see.

OH, and I have one damn frozen line again.  The master bathroom toilet has frozen twice so far this year but didn't last year at all.  Fortunately, when they built this place, all the water lines were installed next to the heat ducts but the ducts stop short so there's only a few feet where this line doesn't rest next to heat.  I gutted that room and insulated overboard but will need to figure out how to prevent it next year.

NWS has a lot of new winter storm warnings/advisories up: Ohio River Valley and points south, then moving into the Northeast the next day

http://www.weather.gov

I think a lot of it starts as snow, changes to ice, then ends as rain -- I'm due 2-3" of snow before it turns into rain at midnight Saturday. Should be wonderfully messy. I really hope this is the last breath of winter because accuweather is showing normal temps as soon as March arrives.

Supposedly, we're expecting our most significant snow fall of the season over this weekend.

I'll have to head out this frigid cold to pick up a load of firewood.  Only have a few days worth left and need to be prepared.  I too am finally getting tired of this frigidness.

We got down to 35 degrees this morning ! We really had to hunker down last night  :P   This has been the coldest day so far this winter for us.

The Dunedin, Florida Mardi Gras was cancelled on Tuesday due to a steady rain that was going through the area,  But has been rescheduled for tonight. We're still debating on whether to go or not. Dunedin is next door to Palm Harbor.

What a difference a day or two makes makes. Today will only make it into the 50's, but the mid 70's will return tomorrow and Sunday, and Monday !

I didn't realize DST was coming in just two weeks.  Sunset here is 6:27pm-- tail end of Eastern.  I wish they would just change it, so we don't fall back.

Weather-- We've gotten more snow than Indy, so far.  Our average is 12 inches.  Last year we got 25 inches.  This year, we got Halloween snow, thanksgiving snow, and then a few inches on January 23.  This week, we got 7 inches officially on the big storm, but up to 11 inches in the suburbs.  Then, we got 2-4 inches more depending on where you live in the county.  Tonight, we are expecting anywhere up to 10 inches.  It is tricky, because freezing rain may come, depending on if we get the warmer air in the city.  School was out all week.

I won't be surprised if we get 6" on snow with little turn over to rain. It's been coming down hard for six hours already and it's still 25F. They're still saying it will change to rain by midnight.

I'm wondering though if it does that and then rains for 7-8 hours how much shoveling I'll have left in the morning, or if I should go outside and shovel some before going to bed.

Decisions, decisions...

Glad I didn't go out and shovel last night. We had 5" of snow which turned to sleet at 10pm and rain at midnight, so by this morning we were down to maybe a few inches of slush. Right now it's 43F so I went outside and it took me about 3 minutes to scoop the slush to one side and throw down some salt.

We ended up getting 9" and it's absolutely beautiful if viewing it from inside, sitting next to a fire.  :)  We're still breaking record low temps.  It's down right frigid...brr

I've had to work quite a bit because of the weather and my close proximity.  It's only 3 miles away but treacherous.  Saturday morning, I had to drive in 4 wheel low the entire way as no plows had even been out yet.  I couldn't see the road and half the drive is along a huge ravine with no guardrails.

I'm ever so grateful that I got a 4x4 recently as there is no way either of my rear wheel drive pick ups would have fared very well.

From what I am seeing from the meteorologists I follow on FB the forecast models are strengthening, but mostly in the are from NE Georgia up to Norfolk, VA. After that it just goes out to sea so it will not be coming up the coast and bothering me :)

Raleigh, NC up to Norfolk, VA will get the highest amounts.

NWS definitely is already saying 2-5" for B'ham.

The NAM model updated this morning has the low going slightly further north by the time it reaches NC/VA. FYI & IIRC with the NAM model these totals are maximum possibilities and guidance, not a forecast.

This is also a very wet, heavy snowfall -- not light and powdery. So that means A LOT of power outages in areas hit very hard.

Heading up to Mount Vernon to help Greg pack.  In the middle of the night, the main water line for his complex ruptured.  It happened in the wall of his main closet and it flooded the entire apartment.  He couldn't get hold of maintenance for several hours and it continually spewed water.  They're moving him to another apartment but who in the hell enjoys moving in the freezing cold?  But, not much to do but just do it.

So yeah, I'm now offically tired of this bitter cold.

Our local weather is supposedly in the path of some upcoming snow event. We're supposed to get "several more inches" this Sunday.  Hello, we already have over two feet!  I wonder if we're ever going to have spring.  And oh, our temps are supposedly going to be below 0F the next few nights.

And Greg, that really sucks! Hope there wasn't much damage done. Ugh.

We worked our asses off.  I don't think I've ever been this sore.  They only had a 3rd floor apartment available which meant we had to schlep everything up 3 flights of stairs.  UGH!!!!

After about 8 hours, the complex manager stopped by to check on our progress.  She actually had the nerve to ask if we'd be done last night as they need to get to work on the damage.  I looked right at her and asked "REALLY?"  The other Greg is much nicer than I am and even asked if we could have a couple of days since we both work.  She said she supposed that was alright but would appreciate if we could get it done quickly.

Thank goodness I forgot to bring my evening meds and decided to come home as I was also exhausted and sweaty.  I walk in and it was freezing in here.  Some how, the damn furnace pilot light went out.  Had I spent the night, I'd probably be dealing with frozen lines myself.

So yuckity yuck, it was an awful day except it showed us how well we work together and handle bad situations.

Another day, another winter storm warning -- on NWS's weather.gov the warnings stretch from central Texas to Boston. And from Boston down to South Carolina. Oddly all I am predicted to see is 1-2" of snow topped with 0.1" of ice followed by rain and a high of 41F tomorrow to melt it all away.

Big whoop.

Unfortunately I can't say that this is the last of the season as they're also showing snow/sleet on Tuesday and Thursday.

As for gay on purpose, The Belvedere on Fire Island is easily in the Top 10, no?

I'm sure there are some staggeringly gay camp fests on the Black Sea, and in Greece.

There are still quite a few B&Bs on the outer Cape,
Some stay open all winter especially in P Town.
Think I had brunch at the Belvedere ..?
It was in September and I remember a mad rush for the ferry.

Winter in Miami while usually dry can have a bit of rain at times... This was that "bit" of rain we got yesterday....

Downtown Miami:

And, after I swam to my car, this was the view from the driver's side seat at the parking lot  --- notice the formation of South Florida's newest geyser...

But, made it to see Jody and have a great time (not a winning time, but a great time) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood...

Jody sends his best to everyone - And, probably didn't want me to tell all of you suffering the Winter of 2015 up North that he is getting ready to take a swim in the pool at the B&B he is staying at.... Can't blame him for wanting to get a swim in as it is 80 degrees and just a bit humid here.

Oh I'll probably go out at some point today.  Our deck outside the living room needs to be cleared so we can fill up the bird feeder. We broke a record for the snowiest February.

Betty

We broke a record for the coldest February on record.  I'm ever so fortunate that I discovered my broken heat ducts when I did.  For this period last year, my heat bill for one month was $660 and it wasn't as cold.  Was quite happy to receive my bill and see it only be $180.

And now that we're expecting a warming trend, they're calling for mass flooding.  We already sit in a valley below lake level and have a difficult time getting rid of ground water.

As of now, it looks like we are going to see a repeat of the snow storm from 2 weeks ago.  Six of seven models show significant snow for Louisville on Wednesday, ranging from 4-12 inches.  The snow is just now finally melting from the sunny places.  The dogs have their pooping areas back.  Our little Puggy doesn't like his junk in the snow.

Oh, suppose to be 60 degrees tomorrow on Tuesday.

lol.

I think we have had about 50" so far and it's all still there but compacted a bit. Rain expected on Wednesday. I want it all melted by the time we return from our venture to Palm Springs to check out our possible new digs in a year or most likely two.

Can't wait to escape!

I hope everyone realizes yet another big storm is coming: Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. I've seen predictions for DC to NYC for 8 inches, and up to 12 inches in the Ohio River area (Louisville to Pittsburgh). New England is getting off easy this time with perhaps only 4-8".

edit: never mind I see this has been discussed  :-X

You have had it pretty easy this winter as far as snow goes. We had 6" yesterday, 2" more expected tonight, and 4-8" more tomorrow night. That should bring us up to around 60".  Fair? Hmmm..... lol.

Not getting buried but supposedly this will NOT be a light powdery snow, but a heavy wet one. We were supposed to change over from rain to snow at 1am but evidently it didn't happen until 6am, but everyone is still sticking to their 4-8" forecast. Maybe I will go out and shovel half way through the event so that it will be easier on my back.

That's what we got and it's horrible.  Once the temps dropped, the roads were like a skating ring.  Heading home from this work this morning was a bit terrifying.  Even with 4 wheel drive, I could barely maintain control even driving at 15mph.  We don't go into ditches, we roll down ravines....  :o

But we're hitting 60 this coming week.

We got about 14.5 inches at my house.  Highest was about 25".  First time since 1978, we've gotten two winter storms more than 8".  Going down to -10 tonight or lower.  Climate Change is a hoax.  I mean, how could there be snow, if it was real?  ;)

The dogs wanted us to clear a path this morning.  Here's Brian making a bathroom.

Yep.  Koi and Goldfish are cold water tolerant.  They just need at least 18 inches depth here.  They have been swimming around more the last month.  Can't feed them until the water temp is 50 degrees, though.

This is magical! From this afternoon through the foreseeable future (OK, well 10 day forecast) not only will we have absolutely no low overnight temperatures below freezing, our daytime highs will all be +50F except for next Friday (44F). We may even reach 60F on Wednesday.

Of course I really shouldn't find this exciting because all it represents is a return to historical averages for this time of year (highs of 51F, lows of 33F).

There is still 3 feet of snow here and we are about to say goodbye to it all to scope out Palm Springs for a possible relocation down the road. (probably 18 months) I hope that I/we won't be disappointed but who knows.

Anyway, so long sub-freezing temps, so long icicles hanging out our kitchen window, so long Frosty, so long snow shovel. Hope to not see you all until at least December!! I doubt all of the snow will be gone by the time we return but one can hope anyway.

Palm Springs forecast calls for sunny days and temps between 85-90F. Just the therapy needed about now.  :)

Final send off to winter! Spring arrives today at 6:45PM.

And it's 36F right now at 6am. I can see the storm nearing on radar and it's snowing as far south as my parent's in northern Virginia, but rain south of that. On the plus side it will be +50F tomorrow so it will melt quickly.

About 2 hours ago the airport reading was at one inch but it's been snowing since around 7am. It only began to stick to the pavement in the past hour though, and I think it's supposed to stop around 6pm. More of a nuisance event here downtown but I know in the western suburbs the totals are more like 4 inches already.
