Starting Meds tonight!
« on: October 28, 2009, 05:36:32 pm »
Well, the time has finally come for me to start meds. I've been experiencing severe fatigue and joint pain for awhile now, so the doctor and I decided it was time to give meds a shot to hope that I can now get back to my normal life. I'll be taking Reyataz, Norvir, and Truvada. I'm pretty nervous, and also kinda sad because having to take meds makes this whole poz thing seem so much more real now. But hopefully now I'll have enough energy to get back to my life and won't be in pain all the time. :D

That sounds great. It's a very good combo so you should do well. What are your numbers?

I want you to consider that HAART does not make the POZ thing more real. In fact, notice how you have been sufferring without HAART.  Most people find when its time for HAART they feel much better.  And remember, its going to kick you virus to undectable.  That's, in a way, a little less POZ than you are now, if you think about it.

I'm glad your starting. I know  you've been dealing with the fatigue and I know that sucks as I had it terribly prior to meds. Once I started meds it was like day and night, I felt a thousand times better!
I can relate to the sadness also, but that goes away rather quickly, Just think positive and know that you are helping your body, and also know that by starting meds you will feel better physically.

I kind of hate to mention this but if you get any nausea or vomitting call your doc and have him prescribe you an anti nausea such as phenergan. It worked wonders with me. I just dint want you to get discouraged over the nausea IF you get it.

I think you ll do fine. Keep us/me updated as I'll be thinking about you.

My last labs showed a CD4 of 488 and 26% and a VL of 58000 or so. My good numbers were one of the reasons we were previously hesitant to start meds, but when my doctor realized how much I was suffering, he rethought things. He mentioned studies about chronic inflammatory conditions related to HIV and such and that now studies are showing earlier treatment is better again. So, I'm glad that there's a good chance I might not feel so cr*ppy all the time anymore. As for nausea, I'll definitely be telling the doctor about ANY side effects. In fact, his nurse is going to be calling me on Friday to check up on how I'm doing. The first night kind of felt like my head was swimming, but I'm not sure if that was from the meds or if I'm just a bit under the weather. I'll have to see if it continues into a pattern.

hang in there. i started the same meds as you a year ago. my Cd4 was 292  VL >400,000. within 6 months the VL was undetectable---after a year  Cd4 592  VL undetectable. a couple people suggested i keep a daily journal/diary of any side effects etc---which i did. it really helped...and after 6-8 months...no more entries(re: meds) because i was feeling better physically/emotionally--than i ever have. no major side effects..maybe a little bit 'groggy' in the morning...but that shakes off pretty quick. as well, my latest bloodwork showed no problems with lipids/kidney/liver etc etc.... as i'm sure you have read on here--everyones experience is different. take it a day at a time..and i'm pretty sure you are going to feel much better than you do now. as far as the 'constant' reminder of the HIV by taking meds...i take mine @10pm every night...3 pills -10 secs  ..no big deal...and i take them with gratitude that i live in a country that provides them free. good luck.

i remember being so scared starting meds. I had to start meds after a year and half.. i had high hep b vl so actually started meds for that reason.. one of the meds in truvada helps with hep b.  so it worked.  both vl are und.   I have been on atripla for 4 years now.. no problems.. i was scared but it is nothing.. really.  u will do fine.

HIV does mess with your head.. it always probalby will, but the meds just go away as part of it.  its just like taking a vitamin each day after  a while.... for me anyway..  i recomend a pill case with the days of the week becuase you do start to think u took it and you didn't. or did.. LOL
