Question for taking treatment or not
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:23:21 pm »
Hi everyone,

It is my first post and I am glad and grateful that I found this forum to read all of your experiences and kind sharings.

I am an international student coming to North Carolina, U.S.A. for my master's degree.

I was diagnosed positive 2 years ago with first lab result: CD4 - 504, VL - 3762
Currently, I am still not on medication.
However, my result in mid-June was: CD4 - 376, VL - 7429

I am flying to the states in 11 days.
I am willing to take medication now in order to prevent any surprise during my study in the states.
But my concern is what if I got strong side effect on med? I won't be able to come back to my home country, Taiwan, to get my med changed or something else.

Should I take the med now or I should wait until I finish my degree next year?

Also, is there any way to check what's the cost for VL and CD4 test in NC? And the price for the medication.
If I need medication in the states, will I need a doctor to give me prescriptions?

P.S.
My doc suggested me to get one-year pill supply and to see the result when I get back to my home country. Not quite sure if it is a good option. My biggest concern is still the side effect.

Hope I can get any kind of feedback from you.

Thank you.

Hi Josh and Welcome !
Absolutely start your meds now , the side affects from the new meds are not really much to worry about. You will also need to be monitored more than once a year,
usually once every 3 months after starting meds.

Im sure there will be a clinic or ASO near you, might be a good idea to investigate before you leave.
Can bet there will be many weighing in on this also.
Keep us posted Josh,

Hi Josh,

There should no reason why you should not have started med in the first place.
Should start regardless what CD4 count

i think you have only 2 options
a) Grab the 1 year pills & head to US & do our master
OR
b) Delay your study for a year

Hope you will be starting taking med yesterday..
