What Am I Doing
« on: August 29, 2024, 12:33:52 am »
Hello, I want to ask about my condition.

I have unprotected anal sex as insertive partner on 16th of August, it was a brief moment for about 5-10 seconds with a person who I don't know about his HIV status before I realized my mistake and take out my penis. No ejaculation and as far as I know there is no blood.

I tried to take PEP but it's nowhere available at that moment.

I want to ask about my risk of getting HIV from this experience. I am so nervous waiting for this window period to end. I get tested for about 3 days after the incident and it is non reactive with 4th gen finger prick rapid test (Abbott) which indicates that I am not previously infected. I was in a monogamous relationship before for 10 ten years, but at that moment I cheated on him with someone I barely knew in other town. I haven't been active sexually since the incident.

Should I get tested on 14 days to put my mind on ease at least or better to wait for one month? Or should I better take RNA test at this time?

Waiting for window period to  pass is so stressful. Please help me.

Hiya,

I read your post three times.

Understand there was condomless penetration and you were the insertive partner, firstly HIV is relatively difficult to acquire even when all conditions are perfect and the insertive partner has a lower risk that said it does remain an HIV risk and testing is warranted.

Test at six weeks post-exposure with a blood-draw (lab) HIV antibody test. The result at six weeks will rarely change, and retesting at three months is generally unneeded. Also, get an STI screening.

In the meantime stop stressing and focus on living your life.

I'll mention the same thing I always do when someone says they are in a relationship;

If you engage in condomless intercourse with your partner, you are obviously at risk of acquiring HIV. In relationships, condomless sex is often based on trust or past test results; however, this does not prevent HIV, so if condomless sex does occur, you should consider testing more frequently.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV and get vaccinated against HPV, Hepatitis A & B.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim

Firstly thank you for your encouragement. Well, I know I have a relatively low risk than being the receptive partner. But a lower risk still a risk. I learned my lesson.

So do you think it will be pointless to take HIV test on my 2nd week post the incident?

Yes.

See a health clinic six weeks after potential exposure, get an HIV laboratory test, not a rapid test (HIV-1/2 antigen/antibody combination immunoassay test) and as other STIs are far easier to transmit also get an STI screening.

Thank you Jim.

Just to inform you that I got tested negative on the 14th day after the possible exposure. Quite relieved but still worried though.. I know it is not conclusive yet, but at least it can give my head a rest for a while.
