Photos and hijacking threads
« on: April 05, 2007, 04:01:58 pm »
There has been a trend lately where people are hijacking threads with flirtatious behaviour and also with photos. This is all very fine and good - in the appropriate place. This is what the Off Topic forum is for.

More and more often, serious threads here in Living are being peppered with off-topic asides and photos. This is discourteous not only to the person who started the thread, but also to people who are on dial-up connections. Serious threads often contain information that is useful to many people and when one has to wade through all sorts of background noise to get to the info, it becomes more than annoying.

Please stop and consider whether your intended post is appropriate for the thread you are posting in.

Thank you all for your cooperation.

Sorry if other people's threads bore you...maybe they got tired of watching I Love New York.

I apologize for that comment...this is not what this thread is about, it is about respecting the message of the person who thinks hard about it, and has the courage to start a serious thread and not sidetrack the message with silly pics.

Look I am not being mean but I find it hard to take anyone serious that has removed the pronoun he from their vocabulary.

Enough of the hijack you two. Sheesh! Did you even read the first post in this thread?

And as for the photo problem, it is a HUGE problem for those people on dial-up connections. Not only do threads with photos take forever to download, but they can also freeze a person's computer up.

Is it too damned much to ask that people act with a little courtesy around here? If you want to post silly photos, do it in Off Topic. What is so difficult about that?

I don't think it has anything to do with offending someone with your silly pictures, but with time for those on dial up and making light of someone's serious post.  She never said not to use photos in the Off topic forum so perhaps you can express your boredom there and no longer be sad.

I'll be looking for it in the off topic section.

Klaatu

attaching a picture does take less bandwidth as the attached file only displays as a thumbnail which is usually considerably less in file size unless actively clicked on to view the whole full size picture.

As a general rule, unless you are sharing a print quality photo, keep the file size under 100kb (which is also the limit for avatars)

If it's under 100 kb, it really doesn't matter much in terms of attaching or inserting a photo to a thread as the size difference is minimal if anything.

The only convenience there of attaching is that you can upload from your own computer and don't have to link it to a live picture host site.

Attaching a pictures costs aidsmeds money in bandwidth as it is hosted on the forums.   Linking a picture 'steals' bandwidth from whoever is hosting it.

MY GOD!  You guys can't even respect what Ann said.  Do you have selective reading skills?  Everything that is happening in this thread is EXACTLY what Ann is talking about.  Deviating off of the original topic making the original poster feel like they were never even heard!  RESPECT people, learn it, live it, practice it.

From what I can remember, I generally try to keep my photos in the Off Topic area... and if I've fouled up and stuck large files in the Living With forum too much... I apologize.

MY GOD!  You guys can't even respect what Ann said.  Do you have selective reading skills?  Everything that is happening in this thread is EXACTLY what Ann is talking about.  Deviating off of the original topic making the original poster feel like they were never even heard!  RESPECT people, learn it, live it, practice it.

Apologies if my post offended you.  I hoped to make question related to topic of posting pictures or attaching pictures clear, if there was one benefit to attach.  Answer by Dingoboi seems to say yes so if poster wants to add picture maybe attach it only in Living With or Off Tropic for dialup people.

Ann,

Thank you for trying to bring order to chaos. What the point of undermining a decent thread in the “Living With” forum is I have no idea. Sorry to say, but it makes the whole point of this being a place of support sort of limited really.

People wonder why there aren’t more HIV+ people joining? I’m guessing this is one of the reasons. Having to wade through posts void of substantive content or relevance to a serious discussion is not only discourteous and juvenile it's of no use to anyone but the one who needs to be disruptive.

I have other sources of support to turn to so it wouldn’t be a major loss if these forums were closed, but I know they’re a vital source of support – if not the only source – for others, so I hope it won’t come to that.

Thank you so much Ann for your orginal post in this thread! I'm sad that it was hijacked and disrespected - I've been DREADING coming on here - but I want the support I can get from the respectful posters and the genuine threads.

Thanks Ann.  It is about time.  As one with dial up I have to play solitaire while I wait for a topic to open.  Additionally there is way to much "Off Topic" goings on and it is effecting the integrity of the Living With forum.  Thanks again.

As one who sometimes veers off topic and is famous for posting pictures I want to personally thank Ann for reminding me of those with dial up.  I try to keep all my pics in off topic and may have been veering from that of late.  I apologize sincerely and appreciate the reminder Ann.

Koi and those who have hijacked this thread, INCREDIBLY RUDE.  And truly shows what kind of people you are, and thats sad.

I took this thread seriously.  I was not aware that there was an issue with pictures or joking. It seems to me that the support threads remain serious with occasional lapses into humor and levity. There is nothing wrong with that. Some of the people who have thrown the biggest hissy fits are no strangers to that.

To attack people who just want to add a little humor to a depressing disease is just plain wrong. Ivahope and others bring a lot of joy and laughter to this website. Sure scare off all the nice and funny people and make it a dreaded dungeon of dispair. Everyone said that they were going to take this thread seriously and I think they have. It is a place to discuss how you feel about it. Clearly trying to get browning points like bullies on the school yard with the the yard teacher is a bit much.

Everyone here said they would oblige. Unless you see them doing it again in other threads you should just let it go and report when it happens. I think Ann wanted this thread to be the end alll hijacking and photo inserting. Future violators should just be given warnings and time outs instead of another public flogging. Many did not know this was a problem!

This website still rocks, despite the flare ups, and wet blankets. If you let things like humor and disagreemen on opionions get you down.... Well enough said.

HIV worker, the flying monkeys are going to swarm on you for hijacking this thread.  :D

Are not examples of people adding a little humor in this thread about a disease.  (Which I am ALL FOR by the way, as I use humor all the time on here to deal with HIV)  Those are direct attacks and are totally uncalled for.   We know you have an issue with Sdgirl and you've made that quite clear.  It didnt need to be addressed in here.  Im sorry if this is a hijack, but it cant be left unsaid.

Nobody is attacking or scaring off the funny people, they are just saying it has its OWN FORUM!  And to stay in that forum with the pictures and flirting and inside jokes as much as possible.  I will be one of the first to come to the defense of humor but I do sometimes forget that not everyone thinks like me and that I do need to respect those who have dial-up and dont wish to have humor in their lives at a particular moment for particular reasons.  A concept some of you are failing to grasp.

As far as brownie points go, I dont need them.  I respect what this place is and what the moderators are trying to do on a daily basis.  If you fail to comprehend that they have an unenviable job and are here to keep us focused and maintain a sense of order that is your issue not mine.

I agree this website rocks!  You just need to respect those that are on it for being different than you as much as you respect those that think exactly as you do.

Thanks Ann.   This is something that has been bothering me for quite some time.   "Living With" used to be for serious stuff, mostly....that's not to say we can't post good news and happy messages there!  I still feel that "Living With" is the right place for the happy birthday threads.   Every birthday spent living with this bug should truly be celebrated!

I see a lot of things in "Living With" that probably should be off topic, and the replies with pics and jokes, etc....well let's grow up a bit folks and leave the clowning for Off Topic.

Hugs,
Alan

I am sorry if my engaging Ihavehope constituted a thread hijacking.  That was not my intention.  I just wanted to let him know that I appreciate his contribution and sense of humor.  Ihavehope often posts pics as a means of diffusing volatile situations.  He means no harm, and we all have to agree, he is a kind and warm person.

Sincerely,

Scott

I was unaware that posting a pic on the threads would slow things down since i MYSELF HAVE DIALUP and it does NOT slow down the site or opening a thread, what does slow down the site is when you attach pictures to a thread which I don't do. I do however, understand Ann's point that there is a place to be funny and a place not to.

I do remember in the past posting birthday cakes and flowers etc but now that I know some people have dial-up I won't do that anymore Edited to add: The only pics I'll miss are the drama llama's, but anyway the phrase "drama llama" sends me into an absolute laughing TIZZY with no pic required  :D  :D  :D

Ditto...

Well said but as this is the only support I currently have it gets incredibly frustrating and sad to see all of this behavior..

How about a forum called "Living with HIV and take my Health and Life Seriously" and requiring a certain level of contribution and tone. Well I can dream....

And how about a little appreciation for the Moderators. I might not always agree with them but I don't feel a little respect is unwarranted.

When it gets hard I always listen to my favorite song of all time..........

Jnm594,

Frustrating yes, but this being the Internet, I've come to expect a certain amount of nonsense. Once I took that approach, my frustration levels went down considerably.

Perspective is important, so I take and give what I need to and ignore the rest.

Ann, thanks for your reminder, but it is obvious that there remains many posters WHO JUST DO NOT POSESS EITHER THE INTELLIGENCE NOR EMPATHY to support other posters.  I cannot tell you how many posts I have started to read, only to become ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED AT THE INSENSITIVY of some posters.  Even reading this thread was a real struggle, but I want a safe place back and if this is how it needs to be done, then so be it.

To all posters who feel they have the right to amuse themselves at any expense: grow up.  It's wonderful that your life with HIV is so great, but try and realize that is far from the case for many of our posters.  Try and imagine how you might feel if you came here, confused, upset and in desperate need of support and after getting up the courage to post, your initial replies are childish, moronic and insensitive.  I am not disparaging levity to ease our suffering, rather I implore you to think before you post to a serious thread.

To those of you who hijacked this very thread, go back and read what you wrote and ask yourself: "Did my comments or pictures add to, or detract from the post?  If you are ever unsure, then you should not reply.  Leave the real support to those who truly care about other posters.  And yes your cruising, flirting, pictures and jokes are unwarranted, but more importantly they are both unwanted and lacking of compassion in any sense of the word.
