Title: Encounter with prostitute last night - panicked
Post by: besterman on July 15, 2006, 10:32:14 am
I couldn't sleep. Do I need to see my doctor or get tested? Saw a prostitute last night (girl). Asked about STD status, was evasive, didn't answer 'I was 100% clean'. Said tested every 6 months, was up for testing soon. Has slept with many, many men in past, not always with condom apparently.

Anyway, encounter consisted mainly of caressing, skin to skin contact/touching. Also russian sex with condom, and handjob with condom. There was also touching of the lips/tongue with penis (condom on). There was also for 3 brief occassions oral sex for about 2 seconds each time. But she used teeth because when I removed condom, I saw a very red single spot, probably irritation from teeth through the condom. Then removed condom with bare hand and threw away. Also touched her lips with fingers and have some small cuts from chewing nails/skin, not sure if fresh or not.

I am panicked, is this a risk for HIV. Do I need to see doctor now or in 3 months? Do I need to worry?

besterman,

Nothing you report is a risk for hiv infection. You did the right thing and used a condom. Condoms have been proven to be excellent protection against hiv infection.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. It doesn't matter if you're with a sex worker or the girl next door. You need to use condoms.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

While you do not need to test over this specific incident, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

It would have been alot easier stresswise if the person said, "I have nothing that I know of now". Not saying so is stressful. Of course, the question may be offensive or they may not be certain....But it creates doubt about honesty.

Besterman,

It's best to take responsibility for you own health and well being by not relying on what anyonw says about their sexual health history or status.  If you assume that the person you're with is infected, and act accordingly by using the proper protection, you won't have to concern yourself with whether or not they're being honest and accurate or just guessing.

Always use protection and your encounters with be stress free.

Does this also apply if when putting on/removing it, there was saliva or other body secretions on the outer surface of the condom and you had some cuts on your fingers/around the nails when touching it?

Bester,

Yes. Condoms prevent hiv infection because they protect you while you are INSIDE another person's body. Successful hiv transmission occurs INSIDE the human body as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse.

It doesn't matter if you touch a used condom with your fingers, no matter what sort of cuts or whatever you have on them. Hiv transmission does not happen in this way.

Use condoms for intercourse and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.
