Below are a few of the hotels I've researched that I believe will be appropriate for our gathering.
The dates are for August 17 - 22. August appears to be a busy convention month, along with some sports team in town the other weeks which increased room rates.
Please review carefully, and vote for your choice. These rates are time sensitive so hopefully we can all come to a majority vote in a timely manner. Please feel free to discuss the pros and cons of each property so others can make an informed choice.
The Sixth Avenue Inn
2000, Sixth Avenue,

Roosevelt Hotel

Crowne Plaza Seattle

Tripadvisor.com also provides some good information from travelers on each of the hotels listed.
I like the Roosevelt --- and it has pretty good reviews, looks like a great location.
Although, the 6th Avenue is across the street from a gentleman's club :o
-
My vote is for the Roosevelt as well. I looked at their reviews on tripadvisor and they scored pretty much as well as the Crown Plaza, which is significantly more expensive. The Sixth Avenue didn't rate nearly as well. I like the amenities of the Roosevelt, although the free wireless in room of the Sixth was a plus. But I can survive with only free wireless in the lobby.
I was concerned about the Roosevelt not having A/C because it wasn't mentioned in their list of amenities, so I called their reservation line and asked. Yes, I'm that picky. And yes, that hotel is air conditioned, for all us picky don't want to be sticky folks.
I think the Crown Plaza is just too expensive for the quality, plus its too commercialized. The Sixth Avenue isn't high enough quality. I think the Roosevelt is the perfect combination of price, location and amenities.

I like the Roosevelt too -- for all the reasons already mentioned.

I'm not ready to vote yet, but just pointing out that Crowne Plaza offers a free Breakfast while The Roosevelt doesn't seem to. Not that it really matters to me personally since I'm usually just a coffee guy, but to some the difference in daily rate versus breakfast might make it more comparable.
-
The Roosevelt has a bar off the lobby:
Enjoy $3.50 martinis every day along with a variety of drink specials (determined every 30 minutes using a roulette-style wheel).
Kind of like gambling for martinis. I like that in a bar.
still deciding here.

A free breakfast for forty bucks more a night, plus the difference in taxes? Doesn't seem that much of a comparison to me, lol.
-
Okay, so the AMG Coordinator did his part and found out the info on the hotels, now I'd like to contribute my math brain (well actually, my ability to use a calculator) and list the actual nightly costs of each hotel, taking the tax into account.
Sixth Avenue:
$99 a night + 15.6% tax = $114.44 a night
Roosevelt:
$115 a night + 15.6% tax = $132.94 a night
Crowne Plaza:
$155 a night + 15.6% tax = $179.18 a night
So.. these are the actual nightly costs of each hotel. I thought this might give us all a better perspective and help us decide based on what we'd actually be paying.
odyssey
-
I agree Odyssey -
Just to break it out with rate+tax x nights
Sixth Avenue $114.44 x 5 nights = $572.20
Roosevelt $132.94 x 5 nights = $664.70
Crown Plaza $179.18 x 5 nights = $895.90
Above nightly rates are with the 15.6% tax included per night
So, there is a $231.20 difference between what will be paid at Crown compared to Roosevelt -
If we base it onl Crown having breakfast that basically is a $42 breakfast --- something tells me there are places located close by that have breakfast for less than that. ;D
In regards to airfare (although I'm sue prices will change either up or down - especially if there are specials) but here are some airfares for the dates given -- this may also help when considering nightly rates for a hotel (when also considering air travel):
Fort Lauderdale $347 Philadelphia $373 Dallas $372 London $1,072
San Francisco $245 Charlotte $284 Sydney Aus. $1,693 New Orleans $318
New Zealand $1,889
Just a few select cities (Roundtrip --- using Expedia - but I'm sure there are other carriers that different rates)
A free breakfast for forty bucks more a night, plus the difference in taxes? Doesn't seem that much of a comparison to me, lol.

I'm liking the Roosevelt . final answer .

Yeah phil, somehow I have to agree with you. All of the hotels are located right downtown, so I gather there will plenty of places to eat, and we can willingly skip those charging 42 bucks for a freaking breakfast!
-
I was just checking out the Roosevelt website again, and found this little tidbit:
Grand City Breakfast Buffet
Start your morning with your choice of bacon, eggs, cereals, pastries, fresh fruit, juices, tea and coffee—all for just $9.95 plus tax.
Now that seems reasonable. We could each get three or so days breakfast for what we'd be paying in extra just for the breakfast at the Crowne. And I wonder if we (more specifically the AMG Coordinator) could negotiate something with the hotel like he did for the Boston AMG for a discounted rate on the breakfast buffet if we agreed to use it a certain number of times?

Hey Everyone:
Of the 3 choices, the Roosevelt is probably the best optiion. It's centrally located and economical.
It's only 3 blocks from the Westlake transit station (for those coming via the airport), just a couple of blocks from the monorail (Seattle Center), on the busline for Capitol Hill (nightlife), lots of shopping, food options, and close to the waterfront and Pike Place Market (all must do things when visiting Seattle).
It is an old hotel (landmark), I believe it was built in the 1920s, but has been renovated. For those who went to SF it's kind of like that hotel but probably in better shape.
I stayed there once MANY MANY years ago, the rooms are kind of small as I recall, but dollar for dollar, value and location, this would be my selection of the 3.

I'm going to vote with RAB and Willy and go with the Roosevelt. It seems like a decent place and I like how it's close to everything I'd like to see.
I'm hoping I can drag my mom with me this year, though it's not going to take much dragging. :)

Yes, they do. I posted above that I had called them and asked, and in fact that hotel is air conditioned, even though their website doesn't state that fact.

What about those of us taking the train? How far from Union Station? I think Will mentioned there will be a few of us arriving together by train and if that's the case, we might need an escort to the hotel so we don't get shanghaied off to Tacoma.
Roosevelt sounds good to me.
-
The Roosevelt seems like the good choice. Its go my vote.
They even include a makeup mirror in each room, so RAB can put on his face before he saunters in for breakfast.

Hey, So I live in Seattle. Of the three you have narrowed it down to I would throw my 2 cents in. The Roosevelt would be my choice. It has the best location of the 3. The 6th Ave inn is kind of "dumpy"
The Crown is ok too but the roosevelt has a better location (in my opinion).
However, I have not actually stayed at any of them so I couldn't tell you what the rooms look like.
-
I vote for the Roosevelt, Seattle sounds like it will be great fun.
Jody :)
-
When in Seattle this summer, I walked by all three of these hotels (little did I know they would be on an AMG ballot.) The 6th Avenue is dingy and in a somewhat undesirable location. The Roosevelt is in a particularly good place relatively close to all mass transit. Seattle is mass transit friendly in the first place. No need to shell out the extra expense for a Crowne Plaza.
I vote for the Roosevelt.

roosevelt, or the green tortoise for the hosteling party types

Roosevelt. Anyone interested in taking train from Chicago? Our party train would last a lot longer!!!
-
My concern may be way off base but isn't train travel going out west a bit unreliable ?
When I lived in San Diego I had friends come to visit from chicago . Two diffrent occasions and both times they had problems with late and broken down amtrack trains , I actually had to go to Vegas and pick up some friends once because the train broke down in the desert .

I've already researched trains because I'm terrified of flying and think it's a tad far to drive. Leaving Cinci, we head to Chicago then to Seattle. I'd be enterested in co-ordinating schedules.

I'm still researching the 3 places, but I definitely eliminated sixth avenue. The other 2 promptly answered whereas sixth avenue doesn't even have an answering service or voice mail. I tried for an hour straight. Although Roosevelt is looking pretty good. Since they're both non-smoking, the Roosevelt looks like you can get outdoors the quickest.
-
If the Roosevelt is as friendly as hotel in San Francisco you got my vote....
Nick
BTW.... definitely not taking the train...... have friends here in Dallas who have gone east ( to New York ) ..west ( to L.A ) and north ( to Chicago) on AMTRAK have had problems every time.... delays of at least many hours and in one case ( Chicago) got stranded in nowhere overnight

I like the Roosevelt, too. That's my vote!

Cuteeeee.... yeah obviously I know $40 bucks for breakfast isn't a deal. However I wanted to say if someone was on the fence and trying to decide between the two then perhaps that may factor into their decision. Just for the record if the breakfastless hotel is chosen then I will be happy to take you out for breakfast.

How was my response "not right"? Isn't taking someone out to breakfast a date? I just said I'd like that. At least I didn't mention anything that could be misconstrued as a sexual comment, lol. I'd love to have breakfast with you numbersguy82, even if its not a date. I find that a lot of times at these AMGs there aren't many people my age, so it'd be cool to hang out for awhile with another younger guy.

Ohhh, okay. I don't pick up on jokes very well online, lol. I'm 24, and I like to think I'm as cute as a kitten. Well, I'm definitely into cuddling as much. Minus the claws. I went to the 2009 AMG in Boston. It was loads of fun. Lots of really nice people to meet. I couldn't make last year's in London, so I'm glad to go to this year's. I'm sure you'll love it too. Its a great way to meet people who are in the same boat, which is especially nice if, like me, you live in a small town and don't know many people with HIV. Hmm.... how else can I sell you on how great it is?

The AMG Coordinator should be posting something within the next few days regarding the status of the hotel and information regarding the making of reservations.
Keep watching the forums for the latest news and updates.

He said he would sign the contract after the first and send it back. And that we could begin making reservations beginning the first week of the new year. Seeing as he didn't come back and correct himself, I'm assuming everything went as planned.

oh sorry =) sometimes I skim over things and miss important stuff. Thank you, yay I am so excited!

See!
I actually just got off the phone with the AMG Coordinator and will be getting more details tomorrow. Best to wait until confirmation is received from the AMG Coordinator to ensure that any reservations are correctly credited to AMG 2011 - usually there is a code - and that the rate given for the reservation is the one that was negotiated via the contract. The key words in the Coordinator's post is that "you should be able to make reservations beginning the first week of 2011." I suggest waiting until we hear that we can make reservations.
-
Well, if the hotel took reservations from people, and they didn't have a contract, then that would be a problem. The way I read it was that you could call and the hotel should be ready to take reservations at that time. Maybe the coordinator should have been more clear that he would come back and say for sure that the arrangement had been made.

I apologige for the delay. Unfortunately, my schedule is busy and my contact at the hotel has just returned from their holiday vacation today.

Hello Everyone!
I'm sorry for the delay in getting you information about booking your rooms for AMG. I am currently waiting for a revised contract from the hotel removing the stipulation that makes me monetarily responsible for any rooms which go unbooked in our block of 25 rooms.
Please be assured that the group is confirmed at the Roosevelt. I should having a group code for you shortly.

We'll likely be making reservations soon, IF the dates allow. They are very close (as in 2 days) to the start of school for me and will likely cause hubby to miss the first few days of class. I somehow missed the date voting and still don't see a date thread, though it's too late for that now, since the contract has been signed. It sounds like a lot of people are going, and Seattle sounds like a fun city. I hope we can make it!

Hey Y'all-
Can whoever is officially in charge of this whole shindig start a Seattle 2011 Names/Arrivals/Departures thread please? I've booked my flight and would be thrilled to post when I'm arriving and departing, but I don't want to invite the wrath of the forums upon myself by starting the thread when I'm not in charge!
In terms of hotel, I will be making my reservations within the next few days, as soon as I figure out if I have to pay up front or if they just hold my card number until after the stay. Will a Visa debit card work? See, these are the things they need to teach us kids in school. I'd never know as I've never paid for a hotel by myself. Managed to book my flight okay though. Hopefully I don't share my name with any terrorists on the no-fly list though. Just what I need!

Hi Odyssey:
Glad to hear that you got the plane ticket for Seattle. I will see if I can get in touch with Dennis - AMG Coordinator - so that an arrivals/departures thread can be started this weekend.
Most debit cards function the same as a credit card -
Some hotels charge a one night deposit while others charge the whole amount. You can always ask, or if Dennis reads your post - or others have previous experience with this - they can provide some guidance.
I've had three different things occur at different hotels - once nothing was charged and they just took my card number, another time they took one night deposit - and another time they charged the whole amount. It usually has been my experience though that they don't take anything or just one night - then, when you get there they ask if you want to put the rest of the night's on the same card or use a different payment card or method.
Even after all these years of booking flights, hotels, etc. I still get nervous when doing it LOL
Can't wait to meet you in Seattle.
Phil

Credit/debit card with a visa/mc logo is required to secure your reservation. Nothing is charged to your card until you checkout or fail to cancel your reservation within 3 days of your arrival. These policies will aslo be given to you when you make your reservation if you have any other concerns.

Just so everyone knows, if you try and use a debit card, even if it has the Visa/MC logo, they'll want you to put down a first night deposit. If it is an actual credit card, they won't charge you anything upfront. Guess that's to make sure you aren't some wicked poor person, lol. Glad I had the money to make the deposit and didn't have to call back with my mom's credit card, that would have been embarrassing!

It's hard to believe that an entire month would be taken up by conventions / sports... I guess I didn't realize that Seattle was such a popular destination. I suppose next time that we should consider the date as importantly as we consider the location; personally, I'm not going to spend as much time researching the various locations if I can't even attend!
We may be able to go, who knows at this point. I do know that if I'd missed any classes for AMG (or for anything else), I'd have gotten a B in Accounting instead of the A that I got!
