Weather - Sick of winter.
« on: February 15, 2020, 03:32:21 am »
Last week it was Storm Ciara with freezing conditions in-between followed by Storm Dennis hitting our shores today. Ugh, totally sick of it, I need some sunshine.

I know but I'm still sick of it.

Wishing I could afford living somewhere warmer for at least 2 months of the winter.

It's not as bad as when I was a kid, walking over the frozen ijsselmeer or watching the Elfstedentocht but still

P.s for anyone reading wondering what the hell is the Elfstedentocht, it's a ice-skating race about 200 km long passing 11 towns in Friesland.

Went for a walk just a minute ago and it was very sunny, however the very cold wind blowing gave me a headache.
It's really unfortunate that the seasons go from summer to winter (at least where I'm from) there isn't that stepping stone period to change and have a mild weather. It's certainly not how it used to be 10 years ago.

Feeling the same here.

Went for a walk just a minute ago and it was very sunny, however the very cold wind blowing gave me a headache.

Earlier this week I took a walk in the park and pretended it's was a warm spring day to try and cheer myself up. The rain put an end to my delusion though.

Maybe you could give one of the cats a home...
I thought Greece had a pretty good number of animals? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_Greece

Well in wooded area's they are pretty common I suppose. The grey squirrel as in the pictures is considered an invasive species in Ireland, still, I do like watching them. https://invasivespeciesireland.com/species-accounts/established/terrestrial/grey-squirrel

I saw the little European robin out this morning as well, although, it's still a tad windy.  Can't really upload great quality here, but have a look

Okay, I had to google the turtle I admit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loggerhead_sea_turtle

Looks nice, though. The flying roaches sound a lot less pleasant.

My island is a huge nesting site for these turtles. Planes arent allowed to fly at night hours for this reason as well. When you go to the beach in the morning you can see the mother turtles trails. Night swimming is forbiden in nesting sites as well as big lights nearby (because the eggs hatch and they follow the moonlight to guide them to the sea).
They are quite fascinating animals.

Sounds fascinating to see as a local, I would not want to disturb as a tourist but sounds like you have front row seats to see something amazing from time to time

There's a sad thing to the whole turtle spotting business, because the tourists don't respect the poor animal. Just like all sea life it should be admired by a distance and not disturbed by getting close or taking pictures with flash.
Most English tourists don't seem to understand that it's a sacred animal,in danger of extinction.

Consider yourself lucky, I live in the tropics and we have only two seasons.
Hot and Wet,
and Hot and Dry.
Wet has floods and Dengue mosquitoes.
Dry has 30 million tourists, and burning rice fields polluting the air. :-\

63F is like a warm spring day here in Ireland.  Would be jealous, except I just arrived in Malta 2 hours ago. 8)

Extreme weather is never good, although, I have tolerated extremes seasons before, not in Ireland I admit. The thing with Ireland that gets me down the drawn-out greyness of winter, particularly this year

It is stunning.

Expensive depends on your preceptive I suppose.

I'm travelling out of season so that helps, the flights were the cheapest budget airline tickets as I would rather spend the extra on a bigger, nicer hotel room or nice food etc.

Car Hire is 27 euro a day. 4-star hotel for 4 nights total 325 euro and it comes with sea view & balcony, food and drink is cheaper than Ireland, example steakhouse last nights 2-course dinner with a few drinks and the bill for the two of us was 58 euro.

There was a trip to Paris from my island for 44 euros only. Never thought that flights would be even cheaper than going to the mainland.
I'll try to look these up,maybe go somewhere off season.
350 euros is trully nothing! It's more expensive to have a week here on a local island.

I have not been to Paris in years, it was okay the last time I went, depends what you want to do on a trip i suppose, Paris itself was a bit expensive like most capital cities.

Yes I’m sick of these winters too..lol...I start to get sick as soon October comes right through until the clocks change end of March. I loved living In tropics  everyday being summer suited me perfectly so coming back to Ireland, the dark gloomy winters I find really tough...but hey ho the things we must do to give the kids a better future.
I always feels a bit of a drag in winters and when I went to live in the sun ☀️ immediately this went away, and now I’m back so is that dragging winter feeling.
Roll on end of March the bright evenings help, but knowing Ireland will be be gloomy n cloudy n piss rain all “summer”?
I’ll certainly if I can later in life spend winters in the sun...now where that lottery ticket?

;D Lukewarm piss during the summer. The problem is we only have two seasons, yeah, I know we technically have 4 but I have a hard time identifying them some years, spring is two weeks and autumn is another two weeks  ;D

About this time 15 to 20 years ago it used to be spring here and the weather was nice. Now it's still cold and its raining the whole 2 months.
Although I hate summer for the extreme heat and the fact that you can't go out in the sun without getting scorched,I miss watermelon and swimming in the sea every day....

Yea, but you're honest and don't mince words.  Even if it does piss some people off, more than likely it's their own issue not yours.  Are you in Ireland? I thought I read that in one of your posts.  My relatives are from County Cork.

Cool.  Yea, my relatives ran out of potatoes a few years ago and took a boat here.  I've always wanted to visit Ireland, it looks amazing.  I applied for a job in Dublin a few years ago.  But being an American it's difficult to get hired in a foreign company unless you have some mad crazy skill they want.

How's the mood in Ireland with the Coronavirus?  People here in the states are buying every roll of toilet paper they can.  It's obnoxious.   :o
But we do need to take it more seriously.  A lot of the 20 somethings just don't seem to care and that makes me mad because they are being reckless and could pass it on to someone who might have a tough time.

I hope soon they will find a cure for HIV.  It's been too long.  Although I'm glad the medication is lower toxicity than several years ago.  I've read a lot of literature on HIV throughout the years so if I ever became poz, I know exactly what to do, the tests, etc.  These forums provide a lot of good info too.
