Odd Taste
« on: December 19, 2006, 08:10:25 pm »
Ever since I was in the hospital, I have a salty-metallic taste in my mouth.  At first, I thought it was the hospital's water, so I asked for bottled water.  It tasted the same.  Can any of the drugs I'm on - Prednisone, Septra, Diflucan (although I wasn't taking that at first), or Atripla cause this weird taste?  Initially, I thought it was the thrush, but that seems to have cleared up.  Has anybody experienced this before and know what's causing it?  It sure is unpleasant!

David,

Some I.V. meds that I have taken in the past have caused that nasty metallic taste, such as Vancomycin (sp?)....not sure about Atripla, perhaps that is the culprit.

Did the taste go away as soon as the IV's were stopped?

Hello David -

Sorry I don't have the answer for you - other than to say I am also taking all of those meds and haven't noticed any change in the taste of things recently. So at least for me, those meds aren't a taste problem but maybe we all react differently to them.

This summer as I was getting sick, but not realizing what it was, things started to taste too salty or sweet and I lost my appetite by the time I was diagnosed and treatment started - so maybe it's how we react to the HIV itself.

Hope it's a short term thing for you and that you feel better everyday.

Some medication for the common cold give me that sensation: sprays for the throat, codeine (+stomachache and mouth dryness), and clorhexidine as an antiseptic used in some tooth pastes ans mouth washes. So it wouldn´t surprise me if it was any of the things you are taking.
get better soon.

Hey David...

It is GOOD to hear from you. The only experience that I can relate to you with taste was when I first started my meds. After a few weeks or so my taste came back. I never found out the cause though. Take care of YOU!

Hey David.  I can't comment on your exact drugs since I don't take them myself.  I can say that on my very first combo., I had a similar taste in my mouth which made drinking coffee or tea unworkable, the taste being that bad.  I ended up only able to drink Postum. :(  Hopefully more people will be able to respond to an exact drug match.  Win

Hey David,

Before I started on antiretroviral therapy in 2003 I was on Prednisone. I was also on bactrim I also remember having that metallic taste in the mouth. After the prednisone ended, that taste also went away. So, it could very well be the prednisone.

Take care----Ray

Ps :   That prednisone is an ass kicker isn't it ?? :o At least it was for me !!

Hi David,
How icky for you! I have had patients tell me in the past that Prednisone made things taste wonky, but Diflucan is a common offender too. Sorry hon, take your pick.
Hope those are both gonna be short term meds for you.
I had a bad experience with some trial Lunesta a few months ago....it made everything taste like quinine. Bleh!
I know you are a good water drinker, so hopefully you can get your normal taste back as soon as you are able to taper the Prednisone and/or stop the Diflucan.

David,

It's been so long since I've had to take any I.V. drugs, I honestly can't remember how long the 'altered taste' lasted.

Hope you are able to get back to normal soon!

Hugs,

Alan

Hopefully, the nasty taste will be over with soon.  Yesterday, I finished the Prednisone (didn't seem to have too many effects on me), the 10 Septras, and the Diflucan.  So now that leaves 1 Bactrim per day, Adderall (doesn't cause the taste), an occasional Klonopin, and Atripla.  The taste doesn't seem to be be so bad today, but it's hard to tell.  I guess if that's the only issue I had while on all those drugs, I really should be thankful.  Anyway, thanks for the feedback.  Maybe now things will taste good again!

And where you shop has much to do with having good taste, so simply stopping certain drugs, I'm sorry guys and gals, isn't going to give you good taste. :)  Well the President did tell us to 'keep shopping' in his news conference.  Win

I haven't been able to thoroughly taste anything sweet since I started meds last February.  If I were to taste pure cake icing right now, it would just taste like a big glob of fat in my mouth.  I'm on Sustiva, Truvada, and Bactrim everyday.  I just recently stopped Azithromycin once weekly.

Take your pick on any of the above.   ;)

Looking on the bright side....I don't eat sweets anymore!

I'm so glad you guys said it first... I've been sitting on my hands ever since I first read about this salty taste in the mouth.  :o As my mother always said, "if you can't say something nice, keep your damn mouth shut!" ::) ;D

All joking aside David, I hope you get rid of the taste soon. Nothing worse than having a weird taste in your mouth. In the meantime, have you tried gum, Lifesavers, tic-tacs or similar? It won't get rid of it, no, but it might give you occasional respite.

Ann,
I've been popping Tic-Tacs about as often as I've been popping pills these days.  Tuesday evening I finished up the prednisone and Septra and finished the Diflucan today.  Now I'm just taking one Bactrim per day.  So far, today, the taste seems to be gone.  Last night, a friend of mine, who's a PA, said that some of her patients complain that the Prednisone did the same to them, so maybe it was that.  I was really hoping that it wasn't the Atripla.

Now, if the salty taste had been from another, more fun source, believe me, I wouldn't be complaining, even if I couldn't remember his name!
