Title: When the bough breaks (another photo added)
Post by: anniebc on July 23, 2007, 09:16:41 pm
A few nights ago we had gale force winds rip through the garden and lost one of the branches on our big Pine tree, when I went out this morning I noticed a large crack at the base of the tree and wasn't too happy about leaving it, so rather than wait for mother nature to strike again we decide to have a controlled fell.

I thought it would take the best part of the day to drop it down, we chain sawed half and then used the splitting blocks for the rest, within 20 minutes that big sucker came crashing down, it sounded like an explosion when it hit the ground.. no damage to the garden thank god..

The hard work starts now, it will take us about 2 weeks to cut the bloody thing up, but at least we have firewood for the next couple of winters... :D

Thats Annie in the corner helping to pick up some wood... ;)

Jan,
That is a BIG tree... glad there was no damage to the garden.  When I was growing up my father was in the sawmill business.  My brothers and I worked in the log woods harvesting trees.  My brothers never would let me cut one down though.  I guess they were afraid I would hurt myself....  Hummmm....      Enjoy the firewood you will have from that tree and don't hurt yourself getting it all cut up.

Jan

That tree is enormous!  Thank god it didn't come down onto the house or something.  YIKES.

RAB

(Who grieves when a tree has to come down.  So many years to reach their size, then whomp.  Sigh.  But it had to be done obviously.)

here in the NW we call that "bucking", when you cut up a fallen tree into logs at the landing.  That's when the work begins.

Like RAB, I hate seeing a majestic tree like that fall but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Have fun!!

I hate cutting down trees..but it was a case of having to.

We have 6 other big trees in the garden that will be with us for the duration...I tried counting the rings on the Pine but lost count at 70

As you can see from the photo that it was too close to the house just to leave it, at least this way we had control of where it fell with very little damage.

Jan, that was to close to the house. I'm glad those guys weren't drinking when they cut that one down.  ;)
