Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Hi,

I have been very scared and worried about this incident so am reaching out for help.

Let me begin by saying that I think I suffer from a bit of OCD regarding HIV transmission. There was an event in my life a couple of years ago that triggered this OCD and since then I have gotten tested a couple of times, sometimes for minor things.

Two days ago an incident happened that has made me concerned again about the risk of HIV transmission. I was drunk and ended up at a strip club where I bought a few lap dances. Nothing funny happened during these lap dances except that I kissed/licked/lightly sucked the dancers' nipples a couple of times. I don't think I sucked hard at the nipples. The thing that is worrying me is that I do not remember now if I tasted any breast milk or not. I also do not know if she was lactating or not. There were no gaping wounds in my mouth or lips but there might have been some cuts and given the weather my lips were a bit chapped.

I have spent the past two days reading up on the internet the risks of HIV transmission via breast milk in adults and found answers ranging from "no risk" to "little risk". Given my propensity to get tested for almost any incident I wanted to seek your advice and ask if I should get tested for this situation? Being a married man has been adding to my anxiety. Please help me with your advice to decide if I should move on or get tested for this situation.

Yes, seek help for your OCD, you never had an exposure in any of the situations you've provided.

Jason,

In adults, hiv is transmitted through:

Unprotected anal intercourse.

Unprotected vaginal intercourse.

Sharing drug injecting equipment.

And that's it.

Breast milk from an hiv positive woman is only a danger to breastfeeding babies. It is NOT a danger to adults.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST FOR HIV OVER BREASTMILK, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks a lot for your replies. I will take your advise and try to put this incident besides me. Given my state of mind I also think that I should finally schedule an appointment with my doctor to deal with the OCD issues.
