There is this country song that is about a little girl who's mother and father are alcoholics and drug addicts. They end up dead. She goes to another family. Goes to Sunday school and tells the teacher that the man on the cross got off and held her the night her daddy killed her mommy... Man I cry every time I hear it..
If anyone knows the name of the song and the artist please tell!!

THE LITTLE GIRL
By: John Michael Montgomery
Her parents never took the young girl to church...
Never spoke of His name...
Never read her his word...
Two non-believers walking lost in this world...
Took their baby with them, what a sad little girl...
Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs...
Never wanted to play or give kisses and hugs...
She'd watch the tv and sit there on the couch...
While her mom fell asleep and her daddy went out...
And the drinking and the fighting...
Just got worse every night...
Behind their couch she'd be hiding...
Oh what a sad little life...
And like it always does, the bad just got worse...
With every slap and every curse...
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night...
Used a gun on her mom and then took his life...
And some people from the city took the girl far away...
To a new mom and a new dad, kisses and hugs everyday...
Her first day of Sunday School...
Her teacher walked in...
And a small little girl starred at a picture of Him...
She said I know that man up there on that cross...
I don’t know His name but I know he got off...
Cause he was there in my old house...
And held me close to his side...
As I hid there behind our couch...
The night that my parents died.

There is also a new country song that makes me cry every time I hear it. It is by newcomer Jason Michael Carroll and is called "Alyssa Lies". It's a very sad song about child abuse......a real tear-jerker.

How about an 80s oldie - "Holding Back the Years" by Simply Red?
-
Although it didnt make me cry, I recently heard Robert Allen Zimmerman's "How Does It Feel" for the first time since my Diagnosis and it took on a whole new meaning.
Johnny Cash's latest rendition of 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' will put a tear in anyones eye
and if you want to boo hoo to something a little more recent,
theres one by a band called Carbon Leaf called "The War Was In Color" which I think they should make Bush listen to every morning.
On the opposite end of the spectrum {tears of Joy} one that always gets me is ( believe it or not ) from the soundtrack of the movie True Romance, its the instrumental by Hans Zimmer that plays in the final scene....but thats just me.
-
She has since recorded it, but I first heard Betty Buckley sing BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER and also AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL at a concert in NYC just days after 9/11. Totally lost it and could again when I think of it now.
Lots of songs move me deeply but don't necessarily make me cry.
Among the many are Dinah Washington's THIS BITTER EARTH, almost anyone singing THE ROSE, Barbara Cook and SHIP IN A BOTTLE, ERROL FLYNN and IF I LOVED YOU among many others, Judy Garland and RAINBOW of course as well as THE MAN THAT GOT AWAY and MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY, BOB DYLAN & JOHNNY CASH on GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, Dooley Wilson and AS TIME GOES BY, CARMEN McRAE and THE MUSIC THAT MAKES ME DANCE, Billie Holiday and LOVER MAN, Edith Piaf's LA VIE EN ROSE, Dietrich's I HAVE A TRUNK IN BERLIN, Leslie Caron and HI LILI HI LO, Louis Jourdan and GIGI, Chevalier & Gingold I REMEMBER IT WELL, and almost anyone's BEWITCHED, BOTHERED & BEWILDERED, IT NEVER ENTERED MY MIND, The Beatles' SOMETHING and IN MY LIFE, etc.
You got me started. Obviously.

"What Can I do today to make a better Tommorrow?"
-
Anything by Celine Dion makes me cry because my ears start to bleed afterwards.
-
'The Valley' from Jane Siberry.
'Everything Must Change' from Oleta Adams
Gosh...bets there's tons more I will think of later.
-
LOL! :D Britney has the same bleeding effect on me :D
-
The Beautiful Ones, from his Royal Badness himself, Prince. Also Purple Rain....*lites her bic and waves it in the air and sings* ...." I only want to see you dancing in the Purple Rain"
-
I don't think I've ever heard a song that has made me cry. I don't cry easily.
-
Please Don't Cry Queen.
"What Can I do today to make a better Tomorrow?"
-
Can I get a hanky, please....*sniffs*....

A song that makes me sad is JESUS TO A CHILD by GEORGE MICHAEL which he wrote when he lost his partner, Anselmo.
Kindness,
In your eyes,
I guess you heard me cry,
You smiled at me like Jesus to a child,
I'm blessed I know,
Heaven sent,
Heaven stole,
You smiled at me like Jesus to a child,
And what have I learnt from all this pain?
I thought I never feel the same about anyone ... or anything again,
But now I know,
When you find love,
When you know that it exists,
Then the lover that you miss,
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights,
When you've been loved,
When you know it holds such bliss,
Then the lover that you kissed,
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight.
Sadness,
In my eyes,
No one guessed,
No one tried,
You smiled at me like Jesus to a child,
Loveless and cold,
With your last breath you saved my soul,
You smiled at me like Jesus to a child,
And what have I learnt from all these tears?
I've waited for you all those years,
And just when it began,
He took your love away,
But I still say,
When you find love,
When you know that it exists,
Then the lover that you miss,
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights,
When you've been loved,
When you know it holds such bliss,
Then the lover that you kissed,
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight,
So the words you could not say,
I'd say them for you,
And the love we would have made,
I'll make it for too,
For every single memory,
Has become a part of me,
You will always be my love,
Well I've been loved,
So I know just what love is,
And the lover that I kissed,
Is always by side,
Oh the lover I still miss,
Was Jesus to a child.
-
WOW I can definitely agree with the need of a hanky
here are a few of my tear jerkers
Anita Baker's - Been so Long, Luther Vandross - A house is not a home, Patti La Belle does a version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I hate to admit but somehow her shrieks bring a tear to my eyes maybe cause an ex loved that version (i digress) Eric Clapton's If I saw you in Heaven is a sure tear jerker it's about his son who fell out a window and died as a toddler.
With my list being so long I guess it is time to admit that I am indeed a sapp there I said it
Is Admittance still the first step of recovery lol

Most of the sound track of 'for the boys' with bette midler and james caan makes me bawl like a baby, it was my first hubby's favourite movie, and portions of it got played at his funeral
especially, "in my life", "come rain or come shine", and "every road leads back to you"..
Robbie picked out the music to be played at his funeral about a year before he died

Superkim, that's "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. Very good song and I love Eric. I bought his autobiography when it first came out.

yeah, Tears in Heaven does it for me.
If it's "Over the Rainbow", it's gotta be Eva Cassidy's version.

"Tears in Heaven" is the song I used to sing to Mini when she was in the hospital. I'm crying just thinking about it.

I play Talking Old Soldiers by Elton John every time a friend dies of AIDS. It isn't so much the song because I believe it is the best he has ever written but, the loss of a friend. Have the best day

You don't get more emotionally naked of a pop CD than "Older" by George Michael. "Jesus to a child" is one track that gets me whenever I am down and feeling depressed.. though "You've been loved" makes me whimper more often ...

You'll think I'm silly, but a couple of weeks after we brought home our middle son, the Disney cartoon movie "Tarzan" came out on video. Our son came to us at 9wks old with detatched retinas, shaken baby, malnurished, post traumatic stress, reactive / attatchment disorder, and FAS. We were told that he'd be a vegitable and we shouldn't expect much from him. We were also told that no one would judge us when we decided to put him in an institution.
Then, we bought our oldest son, nearly 3yrs old at the time, the movie "Tarzan". When Nala, the gorilla "mom" holds baby Tarzan in her arms and sings, "For one so small, you are so strong....I'll hold you close, keep you safe from harm...The bond between us can't be broken...I'll be here, don't you cry...You'll be in my heart, from this day forth, now, and forever more...You'll be in my heart, no matter what they say. You'll be in my heart. Always." I rocked our boys and cried. We have the sound track, and it still makes me cry everytime I hear it.

I've got two. One is sappy enough to qualify and the other one just has a personal connection
1) elvis singing "don't cry daddy"
there's one to show my age and heritage (being from the South) ;D Actually elvis was my mom's favorite artist; but at 7 yrs old, you like whoever your parents are listening to LOL. This song just kicks me in the gut as the dad tries to hide his grief from the kids; but the kids know and only want their daddy to be happy. :'(
2) smashing pumpkins - "disarm"
Although this isn't really a "sad" song, it does have a personal tie that'll make me teary. Not long after this album (Siamese Dream) was issued, I lost my partner to AIDS and very worried about my own mortality. These lyrics just ripped at my heart every time I heard them; especially the line: "The killer in me is the killer in you"
Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
To wither in denial
The bitterness of one whos left alone
Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn
I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my voice
Whats a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you
:( mikie
(who knows the "bitterness of one who's left alone", understands how "the years burn", still often wonders "what's a boy supposed to do?"; but takes his meds to fight "the killer in me" ;) )

100 Years by Five for Fighting
This is a somewhat formulaic pop tune, but like so many others here I have associations with it. I am turning 50, so I am reflective. When I first heard this song on the radio, I was just dumped by a guy I really liked and was hoping to turn our relationship into something nice. (Never mind that he was a jerk and that being the Dumpee is never as much fun as being the Dumper.)
When I told someone I liked this song, she rolled her eyes and said it was used in some commercial on TV. I have no TV so I am not enencumbered by some company's drivel........

The song that gets to me is" If God Was One Of Us". The part of the lyrics that gets to me is: If God had a name, what would it be, and would you call it to his face . . ." I love the arrangement and the young lady's voice sends chills up my spine.
If God Was One of Us
If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets
And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to Heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in Rome
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in Rome

Agree that a lot of the songs here are cry-worthy. Being a music person, lots of these songs make me cry. One that always does it for me is "Baby Mine" from Dumbo. My Mom used to sing it to me all the time when I was a little kid. It brings back memories...

I don't recall ever crying from a song. Movies, yes -- in fact I've often cried from even really, REALLY bad movies.
That's me to a T! I cry at a LOT of movies. I think it's because they all trigger sad memories in me. Maybe if I had fewer sad memories I'd have fewer triggers. ???

Watch it all. If you don't cry (even a little little bit), you are not human.

Thanks for the link. In a car, following the highway, with your smiling Darling sitting next to you, you just feel good.

English is my only language. I didn't cry.

English is my only language. I didn't cry.
I couldn't even get through it. Of course, we already knew I was inhuman.
Odd...I usually love me some Snow, but that wore me out. No tears.

Oh! Me too, girl. Hallelujah! i must be human.
I went solo for my first viewing of The Color Purple. In New Orleans at an old theater on Canal St.
I cried right there in that theater seat when she sang that song. When I realized that my cheeks were all wet I was kinda shocked and trying to hide in my chair...but no one there cared, really.

One song that has always makes me cry is " Goodbye" By Patti Loveless. I believe that is the Title and Artist. Part of it goes like this . Sitting with momma , alone in her bed room. She opened her eyes and squeezed my hand. She said I have to go now , my time here is over. Another final word she tried to help me understand. Momma whispered softly. Time will ease your pain, life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same. She said How can I help you to say goodbye. It's okay to hurt and it's okay to cry. Come let me hold you and I will try. How can I help you to say goodbye . That song gets me every time. Cristy

My mother and I used to drive back and forth to the beach every weekend for a month in our 65 Ford Pick-up. Singing a Heuy Lewis song at the top of our lungs. We thought he was singing " I want a new TRUCK" and he was really singing " I want a new DRUG" we laughed so hard we cried when we figured it out.
DUH....two dumb blondes ::)

I don't know if this has already been posted, but here's one for me.
Both Sides Now
(Joni Mitchell)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqQlfFuQFXo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqQlfFuQFXo)
Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh but now old friends they are acting strange
And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
It's life's illusions that I recall
I really don't know life
I really don't know life at all

Well I guess I must be really old or you guy's are much younger than I because Chubby Checker sang it way before Donny Osmond was around,, I'm 52 and this happened when I was about 8 years old but I will never forget it for 3 reason's #1 it was on Jerry Lewis's MS Telefon #2 the name of the song- GO AWAY LITTLE GIRL and #3 Chubby Checker sang it to this little girl that had MS and she stated and that's when I started to cry also and it just stayed with me ever since...
