Beating high cholestorol and trigerlicerides
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:37:43 am »
Before i started meds 6 nov 2009 ( atripla ) i had normal levels of chol and trigs then 4 weeks after starting meds they had shot up quite alot, anyway tested today all back to normal more or less chol down from 205 to 166 and trigs down from 300 to 212 so im delighted. All i did was a little light exercise, cut back slightly on alcohol, cut out sugar completely more white meat chicken and rabbit and a little less red meat , and not forgetting the all important omega 3 pills. So all in all im delighted i thought they were going to keep going up due to the meds, so folks eat heatlhy and stay healthy.

That's great news, Tommy!  Diet and exercise didn't do much for me (or perhaps I didn't do enough dieting or exercising), so I went on Crestor instead.  ;-)  Kudos to anyone who has more willpower than I do.

Hi Tommy,

That's great about your numbers going down. I'm trying to cut my cholesterol too. My overall cholesterol is 260, bad cholesterol is 181 and I'm only 25 and 124 pounds. It's hard to cut so many things out and not loose weight. Thanks for the tips! I'm going to pick up some omega 3.

Ah, the battle of the lipids.

I have been fighting it for years. It took a switch of my meds, 500 mgs of Niaspan and 6,000 mgs of fish oil a day, a mainly vegetarian diet with lots of tofu and beans, with fish thrown in for a nice change, plus exercising at least two hours a day, at least three days a week, to get mine under control.

But, I did it! ;D

Just curious, where do you find rabbit on a regular basis. The last time I found any was at a small, rural store and it tasted like it had been frozen for a while.

HUGS,

Mark

I guess everything is relative to what you consider high numbers.

It really depends on your body and its reaction to meds. I have extremely high numbers and I am significantly sensitive to PI's. Diet and exercise, although a big part of my life, doesn't affect my numbers. I eat mostly vegetarian and exercise everyday.  I am currently taking 500mg of over the counter niacin 3x a day after 6 weeks of slowly adding 50mg a day. I don't take Niaspan because it stresses my liver out. (the same thing with Fish oil, a no-no for me).

Good luck

I can't get my triglycerides to normal range. They were over 1600, last count they were 468. My doctor has put me on Lovaza so I will see if that helps. My total cholesterol is 186.

Tommy,

Lovaza is a concentrated form of Omega 3s by presciption. One would have to take mega doses of supplements  of omega 3s to get the amt in Lovaza.

GSO,

Hopefully, lovaza will do it  for you !
