Disclosure of HIV status for work insurance
« on: May 05, 2014, 01:16:15 pm »
Ok, I'm not too certain if this is right place to post but I guess this is the insurance forum so here goes.

I live in Asia and I have just started new employment with a company that provides us with life insurance. When I first joined I thought it was a great thing to have but now my HR has sent me a Health Declaration Form from the insurance company to fill out and to submitted back to my HR.

Now I have a few questions running in my mind:
1) Should I disclose my status? I work for an american company and though my bosses seem quite nice and open minded my HR is Chinese and I have my reservations.
2) Is it likely for an insurance company to turn me down if I disclose my status? Or is it more likely for them to raise the premium?
3) If I ask the insurance company questions will they be likely to flag my policy number and discuss it with my employer?

US companies often have a "guaranteed" life insurance amount and possibly an additional "optional" coverage.  The guaranteed amount may be for a fixed dollar amount or multiple of your base salary with certain limits.  E.g. They may offer guaranteed coverage of 100k or up to 2 times your base salary.  Sometimes this is free to you.  If you want additional coverage, it is subject to a health questionnaire and possibly blood work confirmation.  You will be denied for HIV.  Don't lie.

If you signed up for optional coverage, cancel it, and stick with the guaranteed amount.  If you have to pay for the insurance, you can just cancel it and say you're young, or don't have any dependents, or whatever, and don't want to spend money on life insurance instead of turning in the paperwork.

Your situation may vary since you work for a US company overseas, but I wouldn't turn in the paperwork, as it has no benefit and only potential issues for you to do so, unless you can confirm that you will be issued a policy even if you're HIV+.  You may be able to check with the insurance carrier directly.
