If I lived in an area prone to either hurricanes or tornadoes I would be slightly trepidatious. Homes, even for those of low income, in the Caribbean are constructed of reinforced concrete. I've never understood why mobile homes are legal in the US in areas prone to such weather conditions.

The storms we have had in the last 5 years seem to do almost as much damage to brick houses as they do mobile homes . I guess you would have to choose between being crushed to death by your house or flying away with it to die, pretty grim either way .

Steel reinforced concrete construction is not the same as brick, which is generally framed with wood and then the interiors are cheap sheet rock. The brick is mainly decorative, not structural.

They also now make reinforced concrete prefabricated with some sort of thermal layer in Puerto Rico.

I own a mobile home and I don't worry about it. Just like everyone else that don't have basements we go into the storm shelters.

My larger point is that a place like Puerto Rico, which has the highest GDP per capita in the Caribbean, is still only equal to a state like Mississippi or West Virginia. If an average person can have a home constructed to withstand 120mph winds then so can someone on the Gulf, Florida or southern Atlantic coastal areas, as well as tornado prone areas in the lower Plains. But they don't do so because building codes by largely conservative states are not legislated, causing larger expenditures at the federal level when a natural disaster occurs (and costing less disaster prone states in the process).

Though I will certainly add that there are river areas in the North where residences should be forbidden due to repeated flooding.

I agree. Whoever created this has an odd idea of what is shameful. Having a high elderly population is shameful?

Being a liberal, I didn't complain about the states with highest medical conditions cause I went along with the "liberal logic" that those states might be construed to have shameful health care systems and public health advocacy, etc. etc.  The conditions themselves shouldn't be construed as shameful but we know how that works.
Anyway they stretched the concept gossamer thin with some of these criteria supposed to be shameful...

The best movie set in Rhode Island (1/2 of it at least) is Reversal of Fortune, about Sonny von Bulow pic, its amazing. Close second, Alan Renais' Providence...
The best movie in New York is Working Girl or perhaps Grey Gardens...  But there are probably 10's of thousands of movies set in New York so....
Connecticut: please no Katherine Hepburn! How about Far From Heaven, or Holiday Inn (1/2 in CT), or The Stepford Wives...

The Hunger Games was filmed in North Carolina. My neighborhood growing up, Bent Creek, was adjacent to Pisgah National Forest so all those outdoor scenes looked just like where my friends and I played as kids.

Some key scenes from a movie most you probably never heard of titled Big Fish was filmed very near where I lived in eclectic . The last scene was filmed at an old country church and cemetery, I pass by it when I go home to see mom . Much more of it was filmed in Wetumpka Alabama by the Coosa river, about 12 miles from where I used to live .

They select a movie I've never heard of for Wisconsin.....when the Blues Brothers was shot here? I protest. Then again, I asked some guys on Facebook what movies were filmed here and all four said "Dahmer".
