Loosing weight ??
« on: October 04, 2007, 06:13:33 pm »
Hi,

I'm surprise too read that some people are trying to loose weight.

Personally, since I know I'm HIV positive, I'm eating so little.
Sometime, I must force me to eat. The sadness of having the HIV.. But my mood is ok.

So I'm wondering why some people are looking for a way to loose weight. You don't have lost your appetit too ?
I know, for sure, everybody is different.

But I do some sport.
I suppose you already know it, but to loose weight, the best is:

Cardio (60-80% HRM) - cycling, jogging, swimming, etc.. (sport that involve the big muscle)
Hyper protein & Hypo caloric diet

Andif you don't like to do too much sport, then look at the Holford Low-GL diet.

Good luck

Hi John,

Like you said, everyone is different.  I remember I actually gained a lot of wait when I was first diagnosed and didn't drop any until I started meds.
I'm not sure why I gained 20 pounds in 6 months after finding out I was poz....maybe it is because I was drinking too much and to make myself feel good I ate all the comfort food I could get my hands on.
My weight loss was not intended really, but I have never had a weight issue, the weight I lost put me back where I should be and was before the HIV diagnosis.
anyhow...for some the weight loss is necessary because of high cholesterol and triglycerides ( I have that problem so I have to watch what I eat, not because I don't want to gain weight, but I have to take care of my lipids.

People who want to lose weight should talk with their doctor to develop a diet and exercise plan that's right for them.  Unfortunately, a lot of people can and do take advice off the internet and this really should not be the case when it comes to losing weight.  Everyone has their own unique set of medical issues that should be dealt with by their physician.

I had talked with my Dr about losing weight last spring and she told me what I already knew...don't overeat and add lots of cardio.  I am on the treadmill 6 days a week for 45 min and have dropped 30 pounds and can now eat pretty much whatever I want.  It's hard some days to climb on that treadmill but it beats the alternative.  But if I can't have a juicy steak on occasion with a loaded baked potato...life isn't worth living!  ;-)

I agree with the lovely Bettytacy, and will state that many of us could benefit from an additional appointment yearly (or two) with a nutritionist, certainly as one enters the years further along in one's diagnosis.

Some of us enter our diagnosis greatly overweight, and others decidedly the reverse so there's no clear cut answer to any of this.

Hi,

Is it dangerous to loose weight (fast or slowly) having hiv ?

I'm raising this question as I'm loosing weight, but in more, I will restart the sport this week-end as follow:

Diet and Sport

Cycling: 1h to 1h30 per day at 70% to 80% HRM (that is 126 bpm - 144 bpm) 6 time a week (around 1'100 kcal burned accordingly to the Polar)

Weight training: 30min (lower body) to 45 min (upper body) 6 time a week (between 300 - 500 kcal burned)

Diet

Food: 3 high proteins bar, salad + chicken, fish (tuna or salmon or seafood) (around 1'500 kcal / d)
Supplements: Vitamins, nutrient, CLA, green tea, probiotics, omega 3-6, minerals

Results
Between August and September, doing so, I have loose around 25 pounds (quite a lot).

I wasn't knowing that I was having the HIV, and I have feel good all the time.

Then I did the HIV test and then the count test.

The results were: CD4 = 509   VL = 1732

Questions

1) Do you think the program above can have result in a decrease of the CD4 ?

2) Do you think I can continue safely this program ?

3) My current weight is 232 pounds. I want to reach 177.

Thank you
