The "I Pee" Address
« on: March 27, 2007, 11:13:42 am »
Ladies and Gents, I am really frustrated right now.  And tired.  I haven't been able to get but one or two decent night's sleep in weeks now.  I've mentioned this on here before in other threads, but it has reached a point that I want to give it official rant space.

I have to pee.  A lot.  As in, I am having to get up to go potty over and over again during the night, and the result is that I am slap tuckered out during the day.  Getting up 4, 5 or 6 times a night is not uncommon these days.  It usually takes me awhile to get back to sleep when I have to get up and crawl to the potty.  I sometimes have to go again before I even get back to sleep from the last time.  A big, fat  >:(  for that.  And I'm even dreaming about peeing in my sleep now.

This tends to come in waves with my meds and has happened before, but not to the degree it is now and not for as long.  I am wondering if the addition of yet another med, Crestor, has increased the load on my kidneys and bladder & stuff.  I've tried cutting back on liquids in the evening...no luck.  I know they have some newer pills that can help with the over active bladder, but I'm not sure if that is something to go for since this is not technically an bladder issue- I am pretty certain it is coming about from the meds I am taking.  I am also more than a little reticent to start downing yet another pill.  But everytime this kind of thing comes around, I start wondering about the extent of kidney damage going on....or diabetes & stuff.

The main thing is that I am tired and grumpy and headachey.  In short, I'm pissed.

Hey thunter, sorry about your bad nights :(

What about trying to drink A LOT of water right before going to bed? Like 4 to 6 tall glasses (depending on how much water you usually drink). Then you'd wake up 2 hours later to pee, but maybe that would be such a big one that it would let you sleep for 4-5 more hours before the next one?

Very empirical solution, I know, but everything is worth trying!

One time?  Amateur.   ;)

Milker:  I had a similar brainstorm.  Tried to drink a good glass or two to prompt a major pee that might drain me out for awhile.  No luck.  Oh, I DID have a major pee...that was just continued by the regularly scheduled potty breaks throughout the night.  All I did was make one of them a bigger wizz than usual.

AC:  A "growing" problem?  Is that perhaps a prostate deal?  Maybe I need an examination.  Where is Bear's Dr. Love when you need him?

I was just about to ask if you've had a Prostate exam. Men who reach a certain age should have a prostate exm every yr. You could have an enlarged prostate, wich accures sometime in men 40 and up.
Also very important: why men should get exams to make sure they are cancer free, the earlier detection the better. Let me know how you made out.

I'm 36 now....but that doesn't mean I couldn't go for a prostate exam.  I don't think it would be far too early to check and see.  HIV clan blur the usual time frames of just about anything.  I have a doc's appointment for the 2nd of April.  I'm for sure going to bring this whole business up then.

Let's see...that checklist is now:

1.  Pee and prostates
2.  KS and saliva
3.  Crestor and boners.

AIDS isn't for sissies.

I am having a similar problem only a couple of times at night, but constantly during the day.  I have increased my water in take some.  Have a dr's appt in a couple of weeks so I'll add it to the list.

As far as your night time problem.  Maybe a yellow hankie dude would sleep with you during the night and you would never have to leave the bed.  (sorry had to say it)

Tim,

I can totally sense your frustration levels over this -- I'm be one grumpy cowboy if I had to get up 4 or more times a night for any reason, including to pee.  I think you are right to suspect your medications, and I'd also be hesitant to take yet another medication for overactive bladder.  Seems like it is time to see your doctor, especially if you think Crestor is the culprit, because there are many other medications that could help you control your cholesterol.

Since you have limited your intake of liquids, I also wonder if you are getting dehydrated because you are peeing more, as well as more often?  That could certainly explain the headaches.   It could also be a prostate issue as other folks have pointed out below.  In either case, a frank discussion with your doctor is necessary, which it sounds like you have scheduled.

Hugs,

Henry

This is certainly something I can identify with. I've spoken with my previous pcp about this a few times. In my case, there appear to be at least a couple of issues related to the symptoms; an enlarged prostate and also a urinary tract infection that I seem to have picked up. I'm on cipro for the infection but still nothing for the prostate.  ::)

I'll be talking with my new pcp on the 4th so hopefully this will be something that we will examine together.

Tim -

When was the last time you had your glucose levels checked?  Frequent urination is a prime symptom of diabetes as well as the other issues listed above.

Best wishes on a speedy resolution ..

Tim,

Well, you have the list of things to look at and if you do, I bet you'll find the problem.

Now for the other thing.

You need a "right now" solution, and of course, Uncle Tim has one.  In your drug store, you will find a plastic bottle with a neck and a cap, that operates as a urinal, without getting out from under the covers of the bed.  I learned to use one of these when I was driving the Kenworth, and have used them off and on ever since.  You simply hang the thing on the bedside with the handle, or set it on the floor beside the bed.  Presto, you brought the solution to bed instead of all the getting up and down at night.  If you are having too much volume, buy two.

I also reccomend that you increase your water intake on a daily basis to at least a gallon.  Yes I know that is astounding, but if you are having any problems internally, increasing your water intake will help resolve most of them.  Strange but true.

Love,
The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

Thanks to everyone for the input.  I'm going to be addressing this with the doctor on the 2nd of April.  And Tim, I may just have to try that.  Something's gotta give.  I'm just not getting any sleep- and I do think I am starting to show signs of a bit of dehydration (dryness in the mouth, skin a little flaky in spots, etc.).

With my luck, it will turn out to be the Crestor.  I posted recently about my stunning erections lately that I thought were likely due to the Crestor addition to my scrips.  It would be typical:  Sure!  You can have the wood...and renal failure.   :-\

Yes, I was listening to you.  Just hesitant to take the advice because of all the peeing I've already been doing!

No you replied that you tried and didn't work.. liar liar !!!!

You'd better drink that gallon of water now before going to bed. You'll hate me and Moffie when you wake up to pee, but maybe that will be the only time during that night. It's worth the try. And if it doesn't work, well it didn't work.

more water more water more water!

The more water I drink the less I tend to need the toilet. I think this is because the water dilutes the urine and causes less irritation in the bladder, cutting out coffee/beer also helps if you can bear to be a complete saint.

Well, kids....here's the skinny on the doctor visit:

Talked with the doctor about the Crestor issues (both good and bad).  They had taken blood draws about 6 weeks ago to access a starting cholesterol level, and I got some other ones done yesterday to see what difference may have been made since beginning the drug.  I also got to pee in some cups!  They're wanting to do a urinalysis to check for things like creatin levels and such.  My next appointment in May 3rd, I believe.  I will be getting results from yesterday then...unless there is any sort of news alert that I need before hand.  The doctor said he would call me right away if there was an immediate need.  He said we will look toward possibly adjusting the Crestor level based on these latest reads.  We will switch it for something else altogether if need be.  He told me that he was hoping that we could maintain this one if possible (even if with an adjusted dose) because it has fewer potential interactions with the antiretrovirals that I am on.  Things is, I have a HUGE family history of cardio disease (not to mention diabetes).  There's slim chance that I would avoid statins in my life- even without HIV entering the picture.  I confess that I did use Moffie's suggestion about the jug.  For one thing, I wanted to be able to measure the amounts so I could tell the doctor about it.  (My record is 29 fluid ounces, by the by...that's a lot of pee in a 6 to 7 hour amount of time!)

In sunnier news....

Latest VL is still "undetectable"- below 80 this time.

I kinda gasped a bit at the "80" because I was expecting to hear < 50.  He said that was only due to the particular lab that they had farmed my draws to on this recent test.  Different VL scale.

I can't bellieve I have forgotten the CD4 counts.  Going to call my team nurse and ask him for that and edit this post in a bit.

Thanks all for asking and advising.
AIDS isn't for sissies.

The latest from the team nurse:

CD4:  288

All blood lipids now within the normal range, so the Crestor is doing the trick...as long as it doesn't turn out to be the culprit for the pee pee thing.

Labs not back yet, I imagine.  Will be calling to check in on them tomorrow.

Thanks for asking.

Hi thunter34

A new drug-drug interaction between Kaletra and Crestor (Rosuvastatin) was recently discovered.
Researchers at the University of Colorado found a significant increase of Crestor levels (between 2.1- and 4.7-fold) when it’s taken with the boosted PI, Kaletra.

Might wanna check with doc/pharmacist about it.

Thunter,

Sorry to hear you been pissing so much. The only thing I can add is that diabetes will make you go a lot too. I am use to getting up during the night to go. Or I will go then 20 minutes later I am going again. If it is not the prostate issue then I would consider checking the diabetes since it runs in your fam. Just my thoughts....
