First Official Day of Graduate School - MBA Here I Come
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:06:01 pm »
Well, the online portal officially opened for me today to begin my MBA graduate degree program.

I'm excited, but also know that I have to stay motivated and disciplined in order to complete a fully online, go-at-your-own-pace program. The nice thing is, that I can accelerate. When I am done with one course, I move on to the next.

Technically, I could finish my MBA in anywhere from one to two years (with 17 months being my target).

It will require about 20 hours a week of commitment to studying. I am ready. The first course is E-Business, followed by Supply Chain, and then Human Resources.

I had started an MBA program back in 2001, but never completed (it was at a brick and mortar school). The time is definitely right though, as my boss is retiring in two years and is prepping me to be a strong candidate for her position. If I want to expand my options, an advanced degree is a necessity.

Wish me luck!

-Phil

Thanks for the votes of confidence!
getting ready to "hit the e-books" right now.

I'm actually finding the e-business course really interesting.

Phil,

Congratulations on entering graduate school!  I know you will do well.

And, you are correct noting the approximate 20 hours of weekly study.  You also have to be self-motivated.

I completed my graduate degree in Education two years ago after taking the majority of the classes online. I really enjoyed the work-life balance thing (juggling school, family, and work).

I wish you success!

 :)

Thanks again everyone =
Your support, feedback, and personal experiences are invaluable.

I am progressing pretty well - note-taking and framing the material.

This first course, I just have one "graded" assignment - with nine components -
It involves selecting a company with no or a weak online presence, supporting viability of expanding/creating online presence, doing an analysis of competitors, developing the online marketing strategies, discussing search engine optimization, analyzing competitors, discussing international considerations, identifying one time and ongoing costs....... and concluding by doing a three page mock up of the website accompanied by a site index.

They allow up to 6 weeks to finish (August 12), but I am wanting to have it done and in by July 19th.... This will allow me to do any corrections that may be needed and resubmit, hopefully by the 25th - clearing me to enjoy AMG in Washington DC from the 26th to the 30th - then starting my next course on July 31st (which would still put me two weeks ahead of schedule).

It helps to make internal deadlines and personal goals that are more stringent than the ones the university gives.

Thanks again for the words of advice and support!

Well, I will be finishing my first term in a few days...

Successfully completed 11 credits out of the 33 credit program..

Passed:
E-Business
Supply Chain
Human Resources
and finishing up with Leadership.

Next term starts January 1 and will include:
Social Responsibility
Financial Analysis
Decision Analysis
and probably one other course.

I should be able to graduate by December 2013, if I can maintain the momentum.

 ;D
Happy Dance!

Thanks for the kind and supportive words everyone.  I am enjoying school very much; not to say that I am not ready to be done with it (LOL).

I have 7 courses left. I am learning so much - so, that is pretty cool. Don't know exactly where the MBA will take me -but, I am doing it more just to be able to know that I set my mind on something and completed it (something like what I used to do with oral sex  ;D )

Thanks again for all of the support - it means a lot.

Thanks Jeff, Jan, Growler, and everyone -
Working on my final Leadership course task in between checking out the forums....

Can't wait to get it submitted - I have to wait for one email to come in to be able to fully complete it - but will have it done by Wednesday of this week, I will then be off the rest of the month.... and my holiday from work begins after 12/21 thru 1/3...  Planning on driving up north to Pennsylvania w/ my mother and brother for a few days over the break.

And, I have been putting plans together for my trip to England at the end of March (yes,  I will also be hopping from London/Birmingham area over to the Isle of Man).

Looking forward to the break and the overseas trip.

Continued thanks,
Phil
