Title: What were those wrap around shorts from the 1980's called?
Post by: randym431 on February 01, 2011, 12:47:14 pm
I came across an old photo when I lived out in Ca. We were at the beach and we all were wearing those hawaiian wrap around shorts popular in the 1980's. Trying to remember what they were called. They were shorts where you slipped in one leg, then the other side was open and the material wrapped around then held closed by velcro, looking like regular shorts. They usually were bright colored with an hawaiian theme pattern.
They had a name but no one I know can remember what they were called.
Anyone else remember these one legged wrap around velcro shorts popular in the 80's?  ???

PS.
Speaking of trendy fashions from the past... Anyone remember NERU shirts?
(I think that is what they were called)
Had that "India" looking collar. Popular in the 60's.

Those shorts sound like something tailored individually for easy access.  I was a clothes junkie but I can't for the life of me remember anything remotely similar.  They sound fun though.

I don't think I have heard of shorts like that.

The closest version for women was 'culottes' at that time. Any chance they used that name?

In the 1980s I was in my 20s and we wore those colorful shorts (aka Jams).  Those were the most comfortable shorts as I recall.  It would be cool if Clam Diggers for men were to come in style at some point during the next 10 years.... or those tight Levis that guys use to wear.

All I remember are turquoise corduroy Ocean Pacific shorts.  Very that.  The inseam was like only 2" so your legs had to be perfect.

I would have worn these only around 1978-1980. After that they were out and patch madras was in... until my punk phase. I changed looks every two years back then, pre-Madonna even.  OP was during my Scott Baio phase when I parted my hair in the middle (with wings!) and wore puka shells.

I do remember Nehru jackets which were inspired by the Indian Prime Minister. They were kinda elegant but the look  did get old really fast.

As for the wraparounds, no idea what they were called but they sure do make for a happy image as you have described them. Bring back the wrap!

Oh, I have an entire late 90's burgundy Alexander McQueen Nehru jacket ensemble.

The problem with the jackets when they were a fad was they were just too bland. Not on Nehru himself, because he always had a rose or other small flower in top buttonhole along with his little cap.

But Purple!

Sounds yum.

THanks for the ideas. Weren't Clam Diggers or jams though. Hard to describe these. One leg of the shorts was en tacked, and you slipped into one leg/half. Then the other side was open material handing lose and wrapped around to velcro secure in the front. If you were  to not wrap or velcro the other half, you would look like you were wearing half short with skin on the other side, total exposed. The way there operated or wrapped was a wonder in itself. For some it might take a minute or so to even figure how they went on the body. Leg went into the one side that also covered the crouch, other side leg totally open until you wrapped the material around and attached closed with velcro. Very light weight. Colorful, usually with hawaiian patterns. They had a name, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.
Sounds like something worth bringing back, or redesigning and bringing back.

Nice visual there weasel.  Men in tight Levis.  What is it that was once said?  "I hate the fact that you have to leave but I sure like watching you go!"  Some men do look soooooooo good in those tight jeans.  Personally I dont know which I like to see more, the view when they are walking towards me or the view after they pass by.  Hmmmmmm... I may just have to go to MO and check those fellas out.

Hmm, don't remember anything like that. Of course this is Texas and I dont think we allowed anything bright and hawaiin to cross into the state back then.

Could be close Macy, but one started by slipping into just one leg. Then the the rest wrapped under/around somehow.
In this photo, looks like both legs slip in first off. Hard to really tell. But looks close! Thanks.

Looking at that photo again, it does look kinda like them. Need a back shot of how they go on.
The ones I had were much shorter and the material very thin. Any event, those you posted look
interesting too.

I never did care for the baggy look.  I do however like my shorts to have some room in them but when it comes to jeans... give me those classic 501s anyday.  I still wear them.
