Question for the science types out there

OK.  I teach Biology, so I have a pretty good understanding of the body.  The way I understand it, t-cells are made in the bone marrow and then mature in the thymus.  Is this generally correct?  If HIV is damaging the immune system, is it actually present in the bone marrow and/or the thymus.

I am thinking of my uncle specifically.  His CD4's are, and have been, low.  In the 140 range or lower.  However, his VL is usually undetectable.  So it seems to me that HIV in addition to killing the cd4's that are present, has somehow lowered the bodies ability to create new ones (in him at least).

This would lead to me conclude that the actual mechanisms for making cd4 has been damaged.  So even with an undetecable VL, the body has maxed out its cd4 production capability.  Is there a way to test this?

The short answer to your question is yes, HIV damages the body's ability to make new CD4 cells.

You may find the PDF and PowerPoint resources at the link below helpful, because they cover the basics of HIV infection's natural history, and specifics about how it affects the body's ability to maintain/rebuild an adequate immune system + how treatment helps on this front.
