My labs are in
« on: May 30, 2007, 04:21:48 am »
As you guys are aware I went for labs last week and the results are as follows

Jan 2007

CD4     362
VL       2642
CD4 Cell%    15.21%

May 2007

CD3     3021
CD4     538
VL       1718
CD4 Cell%    15.00%
CD8     2347
CD8 Cell%    63.00%

What i can't understand is that I am  not on meds and my numbers is showing this difference? I don't want to sound dumb but what is the CD3 & 8? Previously they never tested the CD3 & 8. Please any help will be appreciated.

Yours always

Angel

The cd3 count is how many T cells you have (as opposed to B cells). Your CD4s and CD8s are T cells. CD3s are a marker that the CD4 and CD8 have on their membranes. Out of 3021 T cells, you have 538 CD4 and 2347 CD8.

The CD4s are the helper Tcells, the ones that mainly get infected by the HIV. The CD8 are the killer Tcells. It is normal to have a high CD8 when you are fighting the infection, the normal count is lower than your count.

Your CD4% is low, and your VL has decreased a bit but not significantly. The CD8 is high, showing that your body is killing like crazy. What is your doctor saying?

Milker.

There are better sources of knowledge on this board about blood results than I so I won't venture into your questions about the numbers, however I too am not on meds and my last cd4's went up 50 points by themselves after a steady decline.  Neither my doc nor I can say exactly why.

You may also want to look at the Lessons section on tcell results for a very good explanation of understanding your results. http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/TCellTest_4727.shtml

Milker thank you for the information. Well my doctor just asked what are you doing? What are you eating ? He is dumbstruck that it went up. LOL Well at least I am not complaining about my numbers.

Thanks for the link Iggy will make a point in reading it.

Hey Angel -

First off let me say that your numbers look good!

Something to note is that while your absolute CD4 numbers jump quite a bit, the % is basically the same between the 2 tests.  The % is often a better indicator than the raw counts so do keep your eyeballs tuned to that because absolute numbers do jump quite a bit (they are not to be ignored mind you).

Ask your doctor about that a bit more...moving upward is definitely a the way you'd want to go and I am not a medical Dr. so definitely hash is out with your MD.

Having said all that, your numbers look pretty good!  I hope you're feeling well and good about them too!

Keep us updated.

JP,

Thank you for the info I will be seeing another ID doctor who is gay himself and he said that he will be looking after me and that he will try and make me feel comfortable dealing with him. The guy I am seeing at the moment Wayne knows this doctor personally and he phoned Dr. Dennis on my behalf and got me in with this doc so I am holding thumbs that all works out well.

Thank you for your good words much appreciated.
