***BREAKING***: Prince of Poppers, Joe Miller, Commits Suicide
« on: September 08, 2010, 11:55:32 am »
source

Poppers are something I don't know much about. Somebody had me sniff one at a Steve Miller concert in the 1970s, and I didn't care for it. The knowledge that their use contributed to people's deaths may have weighed upon Joe's mind enough that he decided to take his own life. We may never know.

Quote
After researching on the reports on various gay blogs, JRL can now confirm that the Rush brand owner and distributor of the product known as poppers, committed suicide.  You can find the RUSH brand at online E-Retailers, adult video and adult novelty stores nationwide.  The brand is distributed by Pac West Distributing (PWD).

The Great Lakes Products owner Joe Miller was considered the world’s largest manufacturer of poppers with his headquarters based in Indianapolis.  Joe Miller committed suicide two weeks ago on Wednesday August 25, 2010.  Miller was a gay man and lived in Indiana.  He made his fortune from the manufacture and distribution of poppers. Gay pioneers can research an archive article Joe Miller wrote back in 1983 letter to The Advocate, boasting of the money he spent in the gay media marketplace.

An inside source sent the following email to the JRL corporate offices last week in regards to Miller’s passing. “You’ve probably heard that Joe Miller died late last night. Joe was a controversial figure in the gay community—I’m sure you’ve heard of his travels and tribulations. He made lots of money and spread it around. Rumors about his lifestyle are rampant, and always have been. Yet, he was largely known to be a recluse.”

He was indeed a huge contributor to the Democratic party and through his foundation, he was also well known for his donations to various HIV/AIDS education and children’s groups.  Because of the manner in which his money was made and the stereotype myth of poppers spreading the HIV/AIDS virus, Miller was considered by some in the conservative arena controversial.

You’ll remember abou the story that was reported earlier this year about the Atlanta gay activist died after using Poppers while he was on the prescription drug Levitra. Alledgedly, Miller’s Great Lakes Products was illegally distributing Poppers/RUSH as a recreational inhalant largely in the gay community, where it was sold in gay bars, adult video and novelty stores and over the Internet.

Miller once boasted that he was the largest manufacturer of Poppers in the world and spent more money than any other business on advertising in gay publications.

Miller gave large campaign contributions to politicians like the late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson (pictured with Joe Miller – right), former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and U.S. Rep. Baron Hill.

Miller’s company also fronted capital for web sites that downplay the negative effects of the RUSH brand known as poppers on the street.  While evidence linking the RUSH brand to HIV/AIDS contraction, has been mostly debunked.

Consumers were always warned that the use of Poppers with Viagra/Cialis/Levitra can possibly cause you a heart attack and could possibly kill you.  Apparently the Indianapolis Star pulled its online obituary for him.  Rumors are in the comments of the blogs quoted above of his company being raided by the federal government, sexual tourism, and using influence to suppress “anti-poppers” regulation and media coverage.

Further research is telling me there's potentially a lot of weirdness with all of this, and you can read more here and read the comments section, notably from "Andrew37"

Actual obituary here though some are questioning why it took so long for them to print this on such a prominent person in terms of political activity/donations in the state capital.

And to put an extra tantalizing bit on the subject, our own Mother Smoothstone and the Committee to Monitor Poppers (aka Hank Wilson, now deceased) appears in this post.

uh... well, I'd order mine from Fort Troff because they were the imported, superior formulation not what they had in the US and they seemed to have taken them down completely from their web site.  Or I'd get someone to bring some back for me from overseas.

I like K.U.M or Fist from London.

So I need someone in the UK to get me poppers.  You can't just order online from the UK and have it direct shipped?

I still have some in the freezer.

I think I bought them back, well, er, a while ago.

They do keep well in the freezer though. Fresh as the day there were first opened

Ouch, Mark!  That must have hurt.  And I thought I was a poppers martyr when the contents of a brand new bottle went up my nose (and down my throat; the fool that I was with didn't even care and wanted to keep going).  Sometimes we have to suffer in the pursuit of pleasure.

never smoke and do poppers on the dancefloor as a friend of mine did years ago. Drunk and careless he spilled poppers on his hands, which ignited from his cigarette. He got away with 2nd degree burns.

I'll never forget the queens screaming and running as he continued dancing, shaking his hands and flicking dollops of fire around the dancefloor. :D

what a sad story though. :'(

That's happened to me too, and it's really bad.  I've also spilt an entire bottle all over a mattress which seems to reek for weeks.

Then there was the time when a friend and I, high on acid, poured a bottle from a balcony down on the lower dance floor.  Good times.

Was this in Puerto Rico?  I can't believe you would throw away poppers like that.

No, but I did have a poppers accident in the Steamworks bath house in Old San Juan.  The time we threw the on the dance floor was back in college.  Girl, we carried in college with the poppers.  And don't get me started on those aerosol canisters of ethyl chloride.  Nobody does that stuff much anymore, but you can usually find a can in a sex store with the name "Impact" on it.

We knew a compounding pharmacist who would make Mother Ecstasy in liquid form for us, until he was arrested and went to jail where he attempted to cut off his testicles.  btw, that liquid which I only did one time was one of the best highs (if not the best one) of my entire life.

I don't recall it being a sex thing, you did it on the dance floor, and doing poppers or ethyl went "out" in a club setting at the end of the 80's, though during Winter Music Conference in Miami ten years ago a close friend of mine bought a can and we did out by the pool during one of the VIP parties, and nobody understood why we were doing it when we had so much coke.

Well we knew a compounding pharmacist who would make proper amphetamines from one of his testicles which he then promptly regrew.

Did you get the low afterward?

I've heard of people being like...forced to inhale ethyl in a sexual setting?  All my information on this is secondhand.

Ah Ethyl, yes in deedie.

Some of the younger people may not remember this, but we used to wear hankies in our pockets to let others know what scene we wanted to get into.

I had a variety and would wear the appropriate one depending on my mood.

The reason this is important is that we would often spray ethyl on our hankies, hold them over our nose and mouth, and dance the night away. I guess it was the predecessor of multitasking.

I still have the hankies, but, alas, no ethyl.

I sometimes wonder how I managed to live all this time. Between teh bug, the chemicals I ingested and the cigs and booze I consumed, I should have been dead years ago.

I'm beginning to think poppers are a natural life extender. ;)

HUGS,

Mark

first time i had ethyl was on the dance floor through a hanky. I remember the fizzy sensation, feeling like a numb tooth, kinda cool and then being picked up off the floor. I can't remember whether i shagged the guy or not, but after an intro like that I would have been mad not to.

lol  My best experience with it was when I, once or twice, would go to the park, late night, sniff it and walked around naked cruising the usual places.  For some it gives headache's but it make me horny as hell.  One more thing though, it also made time fly...

This is interesting news.  Rush is about the only brand that does anything for me.  I normally buy it online from a store that offered 18 bottles for $99.  A couple of weeks ago they were selling single bottles only, due to an unspecified 'supply problem'.  The porn shop was also out of it although well-stocked with the other brands.  Since then the local porn shop has restocked it, and the online store no longer mentions any supply problems although they're still offering only single bottles.

Sorry to hear about Joe Miller.  I never heard of him until now.  Another tragic casualty of the ridiculous 'war on drugs'.

When I 1st did poppers , I was only 15 yrs. old and really didn't know what it was, and that was back in 1973, after that I never really did like them, later as they became popular
However sad, this story  ??? I do find some humor in this, talk about going down in FLAMES on the Dance Floor, I'm sure this would this qualify as a DISCO ACCIDENT ?  ;D

Powder blue (or robin's egg blue) was for blow jobs.  ;)

Don't forget:

Gray - bondage

Deep purple - piercing

and my favorite -

Orange -  which either meant anything, any place, any time, if worn on the left, or
nothing, no place, at no time - if worn on the right.

I never did wear it on the right.  ::)

Leather dykes had their own code as well.

The only one that stuck in my mind was:

Magenta - for women seeking menstruating women or vice versa.
