Liver Failure with Atripla and Lovastatin
« on: April 27, 2010, 04:19:25 am »
I was listening to poziamradio and listened to the interview from this past Sunday.  They featured a 39 year-old guy from Michigan named Herman Young.  He went on Atripla, but after 7 months his cholesterol was sky high.  They put him on lovastatin.  A short time later, he was in a coma and needing a liver transplant.

According to Young, about 3% of people who take Atripla and Lovastatin get serious liver problems--even total liver failure.  On the website, it says he is the only HIVer who has ever gotten a liver transplant.  Can this be true?  They said for sure in Michigan but also said the whole country.  He talks about how someone else in the hospital at that time was needing a liver transplant.  Somehow her family knew he was HIV poz and were upset someone with "AIDS" got the liver.

Anyway, it was interesting to hear his story.

One of the first PWA to get a liver transplant was the writer/activist Larry Kramer (in 2001 at the age of 66). He's had HIV since about 1985 and he's still alive and kicking.

His wikipedia page says the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh did his transplant and that, at that time, they had done 9 previous HIV transplants (more than any other facility in the world), although they are not specific as to the organs, presumably they were livers.
