My life changed instantly
« on: August 05, 2008, 01:46:47 pm »
Hey everyone...

I tested postive about two weeks ago now, im 22, ofcourse I was shocked. I'm not saying I was living the perfect angel life, yet silly of me, I never thought it would happen to me. I decided to go get tested because I saw that they were doing free rapid test at a clinic near my house so I thought, might as well. It was just going to be a confirmation for me to start my new focused life, to do better. When he said the results, everything went silent...I thought he made a mistake, I never thought I would hear that. Things went downhill from there.

Its constantly on my mind,I feel sick daily just thinking about it, I revealed my status to my sister that I live with shortly afterward...I was hoping for support and I got the reverse. She told me she doesn't feel comfortable living with her and her son anymore....I have to be out by september 1st.....I have no where to go. I just got a small job...dishwasher, but I was still hoping to save up money to move out, now I have no idea what to do. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Umahad,

First of all, welcome to the forums.  The most important thing at the moment is you getting shelter.  I don't know where you're located, but I would suggest contacting your ASO (Aids Service Organization).  The clinic you got tested at should be able to give you their number.  Once you contact the ASO, explain your situation and someone there should be able to point you in the right direction (I'm assuming you're in the states).

Either when you talk to the clinic or someone at the ASO, also get the name of a good doctor, and call and make an appointment.  There are things that need to be done (lab work etc.) and these can be accomplished while you're trying to find a place to live.

I'm really sorry your sister reacted the way she did.  Maybe at the clinic they have some literature about the ways one does and does not become HIV+ that you could show your sister.  Feel free to unload here anytime.  Good luck and keep in touch.
   Luv,
Betty

Hey Umahad,

Did the clinic you went to do a blood test to confirm your diagnosis? Some of the rapid tests are not as reliable as others.

If you didn't have a confirmatory blood test done, that should be the first thing you do.

Betty is absolutely correct when she said go to you local ASO and let them help you. They may have many different services, including emergency housing if need be.

I am sorry this happened to you and I hope you continue to let us know how things are going with you.

Please take good care of yourself.

HUGS,

Mark

Hey thanks, I got my blood taken a few days ago and I go back the 20th, though after I got the rapid test they gave me a normal oral swab test which also came back positive.

Im also going to see a social worker, is this who I talk to for help? It's weird living with my sister now, it's bad knowing sh wants me out soon, but now she doesn't even talk to me. By the way I live in los angeles...

Um, even angels get hiv. Funny thing that, it's a virus that doesn't care what you do for a living.

You need to have  your results confirmed with a Western Blot test, not an oral test. For more information on testing please click on this link: http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/HIVtests_5138.shtml

I'm sorry to hear that your sister doesn't want you to live with her anymore.  It's a shame, because when you need family the most they are not there for you.

Of course, probably that is why I have not told anyone in my family.  I've received support from friends, the forum, and of course my doctors and nurses.

Just remember to take one day at a time and definitely contact organizations as already recommended.  There are many people who care and willing to help if you ask.

Peace,
J
