26 years...26 miles
« on: April 18, 2017, 06:40:21 pm »
Very rarely post in the forums anymore but wanted to share this with others.

2017 marks my 26th year of living with HIV and I decided last year that to mark the occasion I wanted to run my first ever marathon...so this coming Sunday 23rd April I will be running the London Marathon raising funds for a fantastic UK charity called Body and Soul which I was a founding member of nearly 20 years ago.

I am not a runner so the process of training and get physically and mentally prepared to run 26.2 miles has been a challenge but having lived with HIV more than half my life I know a thing or two about overcoming challenges.

I have run 156 miles in training since 1st January including four half marathons and a 20 mile training run which I completed in just over 4 hours. My knees and hips have taken a bit of a beating but I am confident they will get me through on the day.

Never think that HIV can stop you achieving anything if you put your mind to it.

Back in 2003 I was in hospital on oxygen with drips pumping me full of antibiotics to treat pneumonia...it took nearly a year to recover fully and even running for a bus after that was a struggle...now I will be running 26.2 miles.

If there are any UK members who will be cheering on friends/relatives on Sunday then give an extra for me too.

Emma

Diagnosed 11th September 1991
Current CD4 count 484 (26%); viral load undetectable (December 2011).

Congrats on what you are about to do and good luck. Since I took up jogging (not sure you can say running as a fat boy lol) last fall I have seen my distance and stamina dramatically increase. Hear us cheer you on each step of the way!

I completed the London Marathon on Sunday to mark my 26th year of being positive.

I crossed the finish line in 5 hours 56 minutes which was just under the 6 hour target I had set myself so I was delighted. With just four months of training I knew that I had to be realistic about the sort of time I could manage.

As a long term survivor it was quite emotional to turn into the Mall with the end in sight and know that I had achieved the goal I had set for myself.

My knees, hips and leg muscles are still sore and aching but pain is temporary; the sense of achievement is permanent.

Don't let HIV be a barrier to achieving anything you want in your life.
