American Gangster
« on: November 05, 2007, 10:11:28 am »
Once again my theory if you see a ton of commercials on TV for a film that film will suck or disappoint. The studios are praying the ads bring in customers before word of mouth spreads.
Of course Denzel is awesome but this doesn't come close to Goodfellas,Departed,or Godfather. Its more like Casino, good acting but a very boring movie that is way to long.
The movie could have used some of the great soul and rock music of that time period, but didnt. Bummer.

I have heard nothing but good things about American Gangster. Has yet to see the Departed and has both Godfather movies, the last one sucked to me. I will have to check out Gangster anyhow, it may still make my Gangster collection. And I have most of the classic ones. Hmm, was it at least as good as Training Day with Denzel in it?

Queen, Its good, its just not great, and I expected great. Two of my favorite actors Chiwetel Ejiofor(serenity and love actually) and Cuba Gooding are in it but both have roles that dont allow them to display their talents. WTF is Cuba Gooding wasting his time for in this movie? JMO
It is not Training Day, it is Denzel being Denzel, just like Bogey being Bogey.
When I  said Godfather,I meant the first. I forgot to put Scarface in with that group of great gangster movies.
I thought the movie was interesting but boring and it had none of the edginess of Departed,Training day,Scarface,or Goodfellas,no  suspense.
I was really disappointed in the Soundtrack. There was "across 110th st. bridge" but I dont think it was the original by the great Bobby Womack.  Why not some Isley Bros,Al green,Mayfield,Sly,some Blues maybe even some classic soul, but nothing but new stuff that really seemed way out of place.

I haven't seen it yet, but do want to.

The studios are praying the ads bring in customers before word of mouth spreads.

The film does have a 77% fresh rating at RottenTomatoes and brought in $46 million on opening weekend so I think you are way off on that one, Jack.

However this:
WTF is Cuba Gooding wasting his time for in this movie?
is hillarous to me!

What is he doing?  My guess is hoping and praying that this film erases most people placement of him as the Michael Jordon sidekick in the fruit of the loom underwear commercials and his horrible streak of box office failures or joke roles like Daddy Day Care 2, Boat Trip, Norbit, Rat Race, etc.

I dont care what Rotten Tomatoes says, the studios use massive tv ad programs as a hedge or protection when they are not sure how a movie will be received. They often dont waste the money or spend as much when they know they have a sure thing. This is just the observation of a tv addict. The first weekend is not the tell, its the second and third weekend. Notice I said word of mouth. WOM does not work its magic till after a few weeks and can make or break a film. Its just my opinion, this movie was very boring.
I havent seen any of the Cuba films you list but if they suck, add this one to the list. I thought he was great in Jerry,Men of Honor, and As good as it gets.
Denzel and whats his name from Australia are both very good, but they are always good.

Thanks for the info, Jack. Best soundtrack for oldies was Jackie Brown to me. Speaking of Cuba, has anyone seen him in Shadowboxer with Helen Mirren? Excellent film I think. I think the Hanes commercials are cute but that's just me. Back to Gangster, I'll cop the bootleg and if interested will buy the dvd when it drops. If not, will be disappointed cause Denzel usually does good movies.

Delfonics. Didnt I blow your mind this time. I think I will put in on right now. I really like the guy who played the bail bondsman.
I really didnt mean to be so negative,I just expected so much more. Did you ever see "across 110thst bridge"? Now that was 70s. All the movies in the 70s make NYC look bleak, dark and just plain miserable.

Haven't seen it, but since it is one of the Scott brothers latest oeuvre, the question might be:

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/film/2007/11/which_scott_brother_is_the_worst_director.html

mmmm so hard to chose...
